How can one properly budget their money? I have been trying this for years and I'm not doing to well. I was doing good for a little while being 4 months ahead in bills however I had a family passing and all that budgeting went down the drain. Anything I had is now gone. I am an impulse shopper which is not good. I've heard they best way to budget is living by cash but I find I spend more money this way. Can anyone share their best budgeting strategy?

There is an excellent website called MoneySavingExpert.com where you can find lots of advice about budgetting. However, the key steps to any budget are: 1) Make a note of how much money you will earn each year and month. 2) Make a note of your regular expenses e.g. food, utilities, rent. 3) Think about less regular expenses e.g. Christmas presents, annual car insurance. 4) Subtract 2) and 3) from 1) so that you know how much money you have spare to spend each month. 5) From this spending money, if you want to really get ahead you should save some money in an instant access savings account - at least three months' salary - to cover unexpected expenses such as the family passing you mention above.

Well, it sounds really not good if you always could not properly budget your money, and I had also is such, but I started to charge to an account when I realized that, in addition, I buy almost all daily necessities when the begining of the month's time and put the rest of the money into a few copies, I have to do like this due to I am a student and I have not enough time to earn extra money, I need to budget my money reasonable, ah, moreover, you can tell friends your idea, ask them some help, sometime I want to shopping but not enough money and I'll tell my roommates, then they will prevent me...good luck...

Yes Ive realized people really need a strong support system around them to help with those urges to spend. I have a pretty good system myself its just a matter of creating a proper budget. There are so many catagories you can have when budgeting. I often watch the show til debt do us part and princess with that Gail girl. She's really good I often think I'm gunna take her technique and use it. Live off cash and freeze cards.

I suggest you learn the basics of accounting. That's when you'll find your way through saving. You also have to be aware of how much you're spending and how much you're earning because this is pretty much what you'll need to know if you wanna save. Basically, you have to be earning more than how much you're spending.

Discipline is important in budgeting - Better save then sorry.
Guess there are many ways to save money and it depends on individual to see how to control and discipline yourself.ONe method is in the beginning of the month where salary is drawn set up a envelope where the forecast bills budget is put and keep safely. So atleast end of the month where bill is to paid, the money is already put aside and safe.

Oh it happens to most people. And to me has happened to make one account to another go. So I started to do so as go out I get a little money and shop for as much as I have. So I learned to save a little bit. It is important to learn how you can save yourself even though it's very hard but little by little one learns. Have a nice day and Good luck!

Budgeting and saving money is really a hard task especially if there are lots of discount sales in the malls. If you have your money in your hand, discount sales become very tempting. In order to save, i computed the cash i need survive for a month. Then I opened an atm account and gave the atm to my partner. Now, everytime I receive my paycheck, i take the cash I need to survive for a month. The excess i deposit into the atm account. this way i overcome me being an impulsive buyer because my cash is just enough for me survive till the next paycheck.

I've been there before. Tricky situation. All it takes is one thing going wrong or impulse spending, etc & the money is gone. Budgeting never worked out for me. I resolved to make more money than I spent, found multiple income streams, invested in systems that both made & saved me money, but all that made no overall difference whatsoever. It was like money just ran through my fingers. Could never really hold onto much for long enough to make any real difference. The solution? Get married & buy a house - in no particular order! All the impulse spending & other habits go out the window pretty darn quickly. It gives you immediate accountability. That's the difficult part, but if you're happy to work with it, the rewards are definitely there. I've nearly finished renovating my first home & nearly have it on the market to sell for more than I buy when we move interstate shortly. So that will pay down the rest of the mortgage & we'll have our own home with no mortgage or anything. Live the dream!
