If I buy a dog, will the cats in our house go away?

Hi to all the dog lovers out there. To tell you honestly, I'm not a great fan of dogs. I like small dogs but I hate smelly dogs especially my neighbor's dog. It's a german shepherd and he only give it a bath twice a week. In the morning, i just can't stand the smell of dog that I need to wake them up and knock on their door. Enough about that, I have a problem with my stray cats in my house. It started with one and now they are six. I don't know what to do for them to go away. I tried to spray them hot water (I know this is cruel but I want them out of our house as their poos are all over), I tried to teach them to stay outside but whenever they get their chance, they go inside the house. Do you know if I buy a small dog, maybe a shih tzu, will the cats be scared of the dog and they go all the way? I hope you have an idea so that I won't need to go to a vet. I want to ask people who are knowledgeable about dogs and their breed so that I would know what specific breed should I buy. Thanks.

I don't think the cats will go away. On the contrary, if the dog you bring home is only a puppy, he will probably become cats' friend (in the best case, because it is also possible that the cat beat him). If you don't want the cats around you should better call the Animal Rescue to come and take them. Maybe they will find good homes for them.

I don't know any animal rescue here in the Philippines. As much as I want them to be adopted, no one wants to adopt a stray cat. Especially 6 stray cats. You have a point there. I believe I need to have a bigger dog than a puppy so that the cats won't beat him. I won't let the cats dominate in their behavior. Thanks for helping me out.

Yeah, a bigger dog can make cats stay out in your house. Cause our neighbor have one(a realy big labrador). All the cats stay away at their house, but now the cats are staying at my house. But its ok for me, cause Im fond with cats anyway.

You'd probably have to get an adult dog that is already trained (and doesn't like cats). However, that issue with the German Shepherd, they are bathing that dog way too much. If there is a smell (actually coming from the dog and not from feces) then there is a problem with the dog, maybe mange? Weird. Anyhow, if you're going to get a dog just to chase away the cats, then I'm not sure tha's a good reason to get a dog.

For me it is for the first time but if they feel get use to each other then they are friends more than ever.

Here are my two cents. Dogs are territorial. If they feel that their territory is being invaded by the cats then they might chase them out but if the cats will locate themselves just outside of the territory of the dog, then the dog might not care at all.

They'll be friends as time pass by. Don't worry

The cats won't go away just because of getting dogs. There are more big chances that they would fight. If you don't want these cats, just call agencies or organizations that would take care of them. :)

Sounds like you're more of a cat person if you've managed to gather in 6 stray cats! Cats are more independent-if you're providing for them, they'll accept that.Adding a dog to the mix...that..could be interesting..depending on the temperaments involved, and the age of the dog-are you considering a puppy or an adult dog from a shelter? I dunno..I had a cat,but never a dog,and by putting the 2 together the fur could fly,or the whole bunch just might bond! Good luck with the experiment! But If you just wanted rid of the cats,it might be easier just taking them to a shelter..

Okay, first of all, if your neighbor is bathing his dog twice a week, that is way too much..My dogs only get baths every other month or so, unless they get into something. There is doggie perfume out there, one my daughter uses smells like baby powder. NOt my fav, but she also found it kills fleas..But really, if a dog is groomed, that is brushed and cared for, then there shouldn't be any bad smell, unless this German Shepherd has this disorder my shepherd had, and that is eating poo. But that is a different story.. I don't know much about shih tzu's but miniature pincher's are small and a hunting breed. They are also short hair, which is good if you don't want to spend a lot of time brushing the dog. Then again the replier did make a good point, regardless of the breed, if you get a puppy, he or she can become friends with the cats, but not necessarily. My neighbor got a German short hair named Smokie, when they had a cat, and though the dog and cat would play, the strays didn't like Smokie and that is when the strays around our house disappeared.. Now I have two dogs myself and I know no cat will come near my house..lol

Hi luz I am not really sure but can say that I have seen many homes with cats and dogs and they get along very well. My boyfriends mother has three a pit bull and a German Shepard and a Chihuahua and all of them get along very well with the dog. I wonder what is attracting them to your home.

Hello Luz and welcome to myLot! I am not a cat person so I don't think too much about cats. Maybe you should start a discussion in the Cats interest to find out which is the best way to make stray cats stay away of your property. I am a dog lover but I love cats, too, and I don't like the idea of bringing home a dog with the single reason of chasing away the cats. The first respondent has a better idea: to call the authorities to get the stray cats. I don't know if a small dog like a Shih Tzu would manage to chase away the cats but if you go to the shelter to adopt a dog, you can ask for an adult dog that is well known as being unfriendly with cats and other small animals. A few years ago I placed a stray dog to a family who used to have cats. They had 3 cats when Buna came in their family. In three weeks there was no cat around the house. Nobody knew what happened to the cats, they didn't find any sign of them, no matter how much they searched for their beloved cats.
