do you have like a certain about of money that if your bank balance falls below you feel broke? or is it when you cant pay any bills or late? eviction? repossession? i base it on how much i have in the bank. i know what amount i like and im used to and if it falls below that amount i feel beyond broke but i know some people probably think its not bad at all.. but i grew up with the whole bounce checks and bills late with collectors calling and then went through my own bankruptcy (husband got injured at work and was out a couple of months and they gave his last check in three parts months late) and we went from no probs to screwed! so i guess im overly cautious because i never want to be at that point again! so what do you have as your standard as broke for yourself? are you one that has high standards and base it on just things getting tight or when you say broke are you like really bad with bills and etc? i hope this isnt coming off as bad taste due to the economy but im not asking for you to dish out what your current situation is just would like to know how others perceive broke..

Hello my friend, what a coincidence because that is what I am right now. Am not really broke but "very very broke". I just posted a while ago at Q/A about having no one to run for help because you're all sources were already drained. Why I said "very very broke" because I got short of my monthly income for some payable s that were already over due and I must have to pay it. Now, I don't know how I could survive til the next payday..this gives me a big anxiety and gives me stress feelings... Mobhomeir here..

I may say I'm broke if I have no financial capability to provide for the needs of my family, pay my bills,no money in the banks, no possessions just in case to use as a collateral if there is no option. With unpredictable economy this days I guess we must learn to save and spend only within our means. Thanks for sharing.

I consider myself broke when we have to stop having extras - going out to eat, buying books, ect - to have money to cover bills. Thankfully we are in a position where we are able to save every month and have play money.

I would consider myself broke when i'm on a famous bridge in my city, with a blanket around me just trying to make a few quid to get a bed for the night.

i guess i would consider myself broke if we couldnt pay our bills and couldnt buy food. we arent that bad but we are behind in some bills but we manage to eat. however, we dont shop (or if we do, its only at thrift stores) that sort of thing.

I consider myself broke when I have little to no money. If there is still money in my checking or savings account then no i am not really broke...because there is still money available. When you are broke...it means you have nothing...so if you base if off having less then a certain amount..your not really broke...money is just tight. I too have grown up with bounced checks, bills being late, and bill collectors calling all the time...but still only consider myself broke when I have no money available. And when i say little to no money i am talking about 10 bucks total to my name.

Hello there, I consider myself broke whenever I can't pay ALL my bills and I can't by myself a starbucks! LOL! This is the year that I can't buy all the things I want, I mean unlike before I used to shop almost every week and I pay all the things I bought in cash. Right now, I need to swipe my card whenever I can't pay a certain item in full. But you know, all things happen for a reason, it thought me to save more and think more about my future and family. I learned the real value of money although, I wish we have more better economy and stable income.

my mom always said she was happy she was raised poor so she never got into the habit of having everything to where when she was broke it wouldnt hurt as much and i agree with her. ive had times where things were good and i had more than enough money then no money and its hard when you go from money to none. huge hard adjustment

Economy is very hard nowadays. Spending what we've earned should be placed in a practical situation. For me being broke is to have o financial capability , meaning no work, no earning. How can we spend if we do not have a job.....very broke

I consider myself broke based off the amount of money I have in my bank accounts, I also consider myself broke when I don't have any loose change lying around and therefore I have to ask other people for money.

When there is no funds coming in, can't pay rent, electric, got to go to food pantries. Can not find jobs for funds. Have to go to a community reach program for help with electric so it won't get cut-off. Yeh, life of a college student, married, has 3 dogs, and trying to do what she loves, writing. Yeh, a hard life, but blessed though. Because I still have lights, some food, and a place to stay, but is working really hard to bring up her GPA so she can get into nursing school. I'm broke, but blessed. I rather be poor with some friends, than rich and have friends who want the money. I'm not happy, I'm broke, I'm blessed, yet I smile. So I consider broke when there is No funds coming in.

I feel that I am broke whenever I had to withdraw money from my savings account just to pay for my bills. I budget my monthly salary for my bills, personal expenses and savings. There are times when I am unable to set a side an alotted amount for my savings and for my bills I stil had to withdraw money from my savings, then that is the time I consider myself broke. I wuld have to really budget my money and maybe stop myself from spending my salary on unnecessary things.
