If someone has 11 fingers it's easy to remove one surgically and it would not show but 9 it's impossible to have a real functioning finger installed in the place of the missing one :)

I'd choose 9, because I could make up some sick story of what happened to my 10th finger like I got kidnapped and they chopped it off. Then i could tell them my daring escape.

No, because I prefer symmetery for my hands. I find it easier to work that way.
