I guess that you already like to read or you wouldn't be her on mylot at all! I love to read magazines and blogs, gossip websites and am a mylot and facebook junky!! But i love reding my mothers new kindle she purchased off Amazon, it's amazing the amount of books that you can hold in less than the size of novel!! The ebooks are cheap to purchase and you can even access facebook viz your kindle!! However we havn't had it long enough to experience any flaws. Could you share your experience with the Kindle? I think its a very innonvative technology advancement, i mean we are far from flying spaceships, but this is convienence for people who travel or eget captivated and want a go anywhere book. I also though i could be great for bookclubs although i personally am not in 1.

I would have to say that I enjoy reading actual books more then I enjoy reading from screens like kindles or computers. The electronic screens can make my eyes hurt from staring at them too long and regular books don't really make me have that problem at all. Kindles definitely could help us reduce the use of resources that we are using to produce books and it would be nice to be able to get the books we are interested in for cheaper. I got my girlfriend an Amazon kindle for Christmas this year and she seems to be pretty satisfied with it. She works frequently and in my mind a Kindle is better then a novel because she could have like a non-fiction book about gardening or some other self-help book and she could pick it up and read it from where ever she felt like when she had downtime.

I agree with you that reading onscreen is very hard on the eyes and tiring. I too prefer to have a book in my hand. All new technologies have their good points but I do feel we are losing some of the old-fashioned common pleasures.

Lucky for me i am still only young and i don't often get the eye problems that you describe but if i stare at the computer screen for long enough it can happen which means i have all this to look foward to in the future. My mum also got hers as a present and she absolutely adores it. I think its a step up in technology and paper wasted which we dont need to keep cutting down forrests (although i know we will) to communicate and put our word to paper, so to speak. I think its a great idea. Great choice of present for a girlfriend to very thoughtful of you, i think women appreciate presents from the heart. Has there been any problems with it at all yet? or all good?

I am pretty young as well but staring at a screen as close as it takes to be able to read a page from a book from a computer screen still hurts my eyes regardless of age. So far I haven't heard any complaints from my girlfriend about her Kindle so I think it's been a quality product so far. I got her the 3G wireless version so that it has internet as well on the 3G network.

I very much like reading the classics. I used to spend hours reading classic novels. That was when I had the time. These days, so busy with the job I have, I can't devote the time for reading books. I just have to be satisfied browsing through magazines and newspapers. And that too, those related to my work. Nothing else much.

Yes i would love to have more time for reading. I enjoy reading both kinds of booksat different times. I think the kindle is very portable library, great piece of technology. I have spoken about it in other comments in this discussion.

I find that a paper back book is the easiest for me. I can put in in my pack and take it with me and not worry if it gets dropped or bumped. I have not tried the Kindle or other electronic books. I do listen to a lot ob books on tape when I am driving or walking.

thanks, the kindle is the same size as a book but holds 1000's of books you can also get cases to protect them.

I have never used the kindle to read books before. I personally think I would rather read the real books that I can hold in my hand. That way I can lend them to other people and have them read it if I like the book a lot. With the kindle I couldn't or wouldn't want to lend that over for someone to read the book. Also if I went to the beach to read...I wouldn't want it getting sand on it or water or anything like that. So I can't say from experience what I like best but I think I would rather read a hardback book.

I prefer 'real' books, physical, tangible ones, purely because I find them easier to read, it's been shown that when you're looking at one page, your eyes are actually reading the next page as well, you don't get that with a computer screen, also scrolling can be a bit hit and miss at times, literally :)

Yes i do agree there is something natural about reading a book. I think the kindles are great though you can read and share whatever your want their is so many options avaiable 4 download on the internet i think the portability of the kindle is amazing and a big step forward in technology not to mention the environmental benefits.

A paperback book is surely the best, flexiblye, no restrictions, you can grap it in may ways and so on. Sounds a bit ironicly, but it's my point of view. Several months ago I was still supporting that, ebooks are the best, but it stresses your eyes, since we are watching a monitor, is like reading a book on 70Hz, it sounds funny, and since then, I managed to relive the real passion of reading a REAL book, with real pages. I always thought, that the real experience doesn't only be on reading the content, but other factors affect your quality of reading, like the auditive experience of a paper turning over, the smell of the new book (unless you have borrowed it from a library). The forums and blogs are completely different, a different environment, it can be called as a direct medium of interpersonal communication, but it is a too broad category, everybody reads, everything, everywhere. So this is my opinion. :)

That's your opinion of course your entitled to it! It's the question i asked because i would like to know what people preffer. I think one day books will become quite a rare thing and i guess that could make the ones we do have likely to be worth more money in the future. I think the old style books are great to have aswell. But i love to keep up to date with technologys latest gadgets, its almost a hobby of mine. I hope for your sake that books aren't once forgotten completely you seem very into them.

Definitely hard cover books. Even when I was doing copy editing as a subcontractor where I got the work via the internet, I'd print the work out, make the changes to the printed pages, then copy them on the computer to send back to the customers. I like to hold what I'm reading. Of course, that's not practical here in myLot or with every email I get so I do it wherever and whenever I can, like reading books. The greatest part about that is that I can go into any second-hand store and buy books from a large variety really cheap. I've actually found some Stephen King books there that were missing from my collection and I paid like 50 cents for each book! I know I'm old-fashioned but that is what I like. I even "downsized" my cell phone from a touch screen to one that does little else than make phone calls because I have a netbook which is small enough to take anywhere so I want a phone that is a phone, nothing more. And, in my world, a book is a book and a computer is a computer. Maybe it's because my poor old brain can't keep up with all these new fangled contraptions. LOL

I think there are alot of gadeget we dont need nowdays and i dont blame you for not wanting to get caught up in the technology hype. I agree that we dont need a gadge to make everything easier although without them we would be far from where we are today. I think there are some amazing finds to be found in op shops and they are highly under rated. I love to find unique decor and vintage belts bags etc. brooches found in antique shops and op shops can take your breath away. I do believe if there were more kindle there would be less trees being cut down to make books that we will never even know if someone will want to read until its to late. I think the internet is amazing in it size accessability and available information. I always enjoy reading your responses as you put thought into each post and i enjoy my time here more knowing, my discussion is being heard with open ears.

I would say that my favorite type of book to read would easily be hard cover. Nothing, not even the new Amazon Kindle, can match the experience. A good read, cup of coffee and a blanket to hand just simply cannot be beaten. It is good that new technologies are becoming readily available like the Kindle, but for people who have always enjoyed reading "the traditional way" - basically meaning non electronically, the hardback is the way to go. I haven't had any experience with the Kindle, but I thought that I'd say that I don't really think it's worth the money - there are other eBook readers that are almost just as good for almost half the money - what a substantial saving. to be honest i think book clubs will want to endorse reading "physical" novels, instead of using a kindle/eBook device. for travel, i'd say yes, go for it, PROVIDING that you will definitely use it a lot, otherwise it isn't worth it.

I agree that i enjoy to have hard cover books in my house and i really hope they dont end up in a museum one day. I preffer the convienenceof the kindle but the traditionalism of a hard cover book or collection. The cost difference is amazing too.
