Don't think our civil liberties need to be taken back? Check out this video of a Canadian couple trying to come to the US to shop. Such a travesty and violation of civil rights! I hope they sued and won BIG BUCKS!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-i5sDOdoFqg&sns=fb

When an officer ask you to raise your arms and you instead put your hands inside your pockets and ask why, you're going to be in big trouble.

I think the light attitude of passengers started to be out of line when the officer asked the address of the mall and the wife answered, "Niagara falls" which the husband also echoed. The second officer, whom he later threatened, explained that that their job is to verify, like if he is going to an uncle, what's the address and phone to verify if indeed he the nephew is coming. One wrong answer is enough for them to suspect.

How is someone supposed to know the exact address of a mall, for heaven's sake?! The officer was on a power trip and unreasonable in his demands. I did not hear the man make any threats at all but he was well within his rights to expect some consideration on the part of the officer. This is a border crossing, for heaven's sake! Not the gate to a prison! I have crossed the Canadian border many times in my life and never met with such unreasonable rudeness on the part of the border guards. Had I done so, I would probably have complained as the man did. The last time I crossed this border I had my sister with me who had dual citizenship and lived in Canada...thank heaven! The point is that the border crossing between the US and Canada, who is our Sister country, should not be tighter than that of the Mexican border where we get all our illegal aliens...yet it is. Being from Alaska, I have a unique perspective, maybe, but the crossing guard was out of line and on a heavy power trip and that is just wrong!

This officer started the trouble because the guy said he was going to a mall and then the officer asked which store in the mall and the guy said, "I don't know, does it matter?" Which is a legitimate reply. How many times do you go to a mall knowing exactly which store you're going to? The officer was out of line.

I experienced very much the same kind of treatment as a British visitor flying into LAX. OK, I DIDN'T raise my voice or make any comments of any sort about the moral intelligence of the people I met. I had been warned not to. As a result, I wasn't actually taken aside and treated as if I were a criminal ... the implication, though, from nearly all of the airport staff was that America doesn't like or welcome visitors. It treats them like cattle. "Look, I have a BADGE. I can do what I like to you, so you better have respeck!" What a welcome to a senior citizen of a country with whom America claims to have a "special relationship"!

This is so wrong in so many ways! The terrorists have basically won when they are able to make things like this happen in our country. The only way to truly gain victory over terrorism is to not give into the paranoia that it inspires. I, myself, refuse to submit to the fear tactics that terrorists have employed and will not submit to these kinds of civil rights violations.

wow how nuts is this? makes me glad i am a Canadian. Americans seem to be a little paranoid. i grant you some terrorists come from Canada. i tell this guy and his family to spend their money here in Canada. its so not worth the hassle anymore to cross border shop.

I was especially offended by a lot of the comments under the video on youtube. These people just had no appreciation that this couple's civil rights were being violated. I just hope that this couple sued and won BIG BUCKS! Makes me ashamed to be an American!
