If you are like me, you KNOW I'm talking about Lassie here. (So why are you posting this in "cats" I hear you ask.) Well, because Rygel is our "Lassie" cat. Like Lassie, he is also a male (yes, really, the dog that always played Lassie was always a male dog). However, when Rygel starts making his "worried" noises, we have to pay attention. Today, for example, Oliver had been locked in the front room and it was Rygel's worried noises that alerted the roomie of the problem. In the past he's let us know that cats have been locked in closets, bathrooms and the pantry. (The time the kitten got locked in the fridge it was the kitten's own cries that got her rescued.) Now, he only does this when the other cat lets him know that they are in distress and want out, but once Rygel starts, with that big Siamese voice, well, he's hard to ignore! I have discovered other cats in the pantry for example because they are playing under the door games with a cat on the outside, so they haven't started up on asking for "out" yet. So, would you have ever believed a cat could be a "Lassie"? Do you have a cat (or dog) who comes to the rescue? I have a friend who was nearly killed by a burglar who's 5 cats kept her warm in subfreezing weather overnight and saved her life.

No Lassies that I know of, just cats that walk on my face at 3 AM if there isn't dry food down for them...

I get that too, but not from Rygel... he knows food will be dispensed - its the ones like Oliver and Pong who get upset... especially Oliver, no idea why he thinks food won't be forthcoming, he's a silly cat!

Minnie just mugs me every morning for treats--starting about 5 A.M., even though I KNOW she knows she won't get them 'til 7 A.m. sharp! At her first try, I tell her, "No way, kiddo. It's no-where near time yet. You get 'em at 7, & that's final" At which point she gives me her "I'm so abused, but long-suffering," look, & goes away...only to return at 7! She's better than any alarm clock! ^..^

My Chester will try to serenade me if he wants something...food or out. Since it's daughter's job to feed and water the cats, it drives me nuts...he comes into my bedroom to "prrrreowl" at me! Grrr...he thinks he's an operatic baritone! I cannot tell you how many times I have threatened his life...and he just keeps on "singing" at me! We call him our "demon kitty".

My neighbor downstairs is in a wheel chair and on oxygen. She's about 80 years old. She has a dog and a cat. The dog is 13 years old now, and cannot jump up on the bed to tell the lady when she needs to go to the bathroom. So the cat has started jumping up on the bed when the dog is ready to go outside. She said she noticed that, and she also noticed the cat jumps up on her bed when the dog is out of water.

Annabelle is scared of cats. I don't think she understands what they are. She's also afraid of small dogs like herself. But she goes right up to German Shepherds and Labs and tries to jump all over them! She scared a big dog so much with her enthusiasm that the big dog jumped into his owner's arms!

I have heard of cats telling people when the dog needs something, how nice of this cat to do it for this dog. I think most of mine just try and stay away from the dogs, they aren't afraid of them, just don't think they like the dogs sniffing at them (or trying to mount them like Zoe tries.)

I do not have a cat personally that is a Lassie, but we rescued a kitten, who is now a cat, and gave him to my niece. She does not manage her diabetes well and she sometimes "crashes" in her sleep. Jassper does not like to sleep with people, it makes him too hot, but when her blood sugar plunges he will like her eyelids until she wakes up. It made her mad the first time, but now she knows to eat when she gets woke up that way.

Are you kidding. My one armed Boots will slap a 120 lb wolfdog in a circle if Voden tries chasing the other cats. That's one tough kitty. Heck after he was shot he limped around the house for a while like it was nothing but a sprain before we realized how bad it was. His breed presently has the Guiness world record of the biggest domestic cat. When I saw the pick of the winner I thought I'd better go home & measure Boots. He wasn't far off that record.

He must be Mainecoon or Norwegian Forest Cat then... Well, Rygel doesn't so much protect us, just lead us to the trapped cats, but only if they want out... if they are happy, he'll stay quiet - but when he starts with the worried noises and there's nothing except that HE'S upset, well, it can drive us nutz!

I do recall that time when we were burgled & our cat 'Tina, ever afterward, was suspicious of strangers, & would even hiss & growl at the nice, innocent postal carrier whenever she'd step onto our porch to poke mail in our box. And of course, I know you'll recall how protective of you Sab was, when she was a kitten... And I remember our friend whose kitties kept her alive through that freezing night, too. I do wish they could have taken out her attacker, though. Her brain was damaged by the beating, poor dear! But beyond protection, I loved Briar Rose's dedication to me, follow me down the street, as my cat Cici used to do, but Briar was too scared to step off the curb & go further. Thus she'd stand there & cry piteously for me to come back, Mommy!!! Cici's range was much further, which is why she went missing for 6 months, once, & I didn't even recognize her at first when she showed uo again, & trotted alongside me on the way to the corner grocery! My current loving furbaby, Minnie, is no "Lassie," but she's just as obedient as my favorite collie! I don't know or heard of a cat doing this! Yes,I have heard of dogs doing this! Cats are smart and your friends were realy smart to keep your friend warm after she got attacked by a burglar! Wow! Cats are smarter then I thought they where!

Cats are definitely more intelligent than dogs! This is why they cannot be trained the way dogs can...they are smart enough to have a mind of their own while a dog is too stupid to think for himself. That said, I have to admit that some breeds of dog are smarter than others but cats are still smarter!

The first thing I thought of when I saw this discussion was,What about "Lassie"'s Antipodean counterpart,"Skippy" the bush Kangaroo? Similar incredibly intutive animal, same unfortunate folks wandering out alone somewhere and getting into the deep stuff...Although Lassie would be probably the best known animal performer (Rin Tin Tin was pre-Lassie,right?),though I think Skippy got green lit following in the wake of Flipper,IIRC.. I dunno about rescue animals I have known, but on the other side of the coin, my former furry feline flatmate nearly managed to do me in one time...He had a warning yowl that meant "I'm gonna hurl" and I usually had time to let him outside ..let's just leave it at "I slipped",ok?...

I'm not sure how they managed to slip this one past, but apparently "Skippy" was meant to be a Male 'roo...But I recall episodes where Skippy stuck things in HER Pouch! Thanks for BR!

Actually, I don't think Rin Tin Tin predated Lassie, but it didn't last as long either... but I remember liking the show... Never heard of Skippy, but I am in the States and I didn't care for Flipper... kind of like a really bad Lassie/Seahunt mashup... I do know about slipping... yikes! I have to say that I have managed to not actually go down when the feline members trip me, but its been close a few times... Then... well, the roomie really NAILED Oliver's foot last night, we had to stop, pick him up (he was pissed at us) and make sure it was okay.

My erstwhile hubby's big ol' cat (before we had met) spent one night in the fridge. Scared the poop out of his mom when she opened the door the next morning and the darn cat jumped out, no worse for wear apparently. Guess he liked it in there. But I can understand a little kitty not liking it.

hi elicBxn oh I would believe it as cats are really very smart and some are bound to have that Lassie trait. I do not have any pets now but when I was first diagnosed with diabetes I had a dog that would start yanking at my sleeve or my wrist., I realized that somehow he knew my blood sugar was dropping so I did check at once. and he was always right. I hated it when we sold the house and the apt we got wou ld not accept dogs, cats yes bu t dogs no. We did get him a good home but I lost my low blood sugar dog so I had to check more often for myself. He always knew whn I was getting low.this was before they found dogs that could be trained to help diabetics.lol lol lol

what a wonderful story and cat. well we have been known to call coco the doctor dog. when my other dog was broken out with allergy, she whined and licked his face and tummy. one time he got a tag/ or growth of some kind on his ear. he was always irritated by it. the doctor said if it grew or got to bad he'd remove it but it didnt look like a concern. i came home one day and found it laying bloody on the kitchen floor. yuk. no way he could have reached it, so coco must have chewed it off. she will bother with a sore on someone until its gone if you dont stop her. poor Bear is gone now, but she took care of him as much as she could...lol.

He really is, and everyone sees him every time they look at my avatar because he's the larger, white-eared cat in my avatar. Good for Coco - I guess - Rygel isn't good about sickness. But the other day he was making his "worried" noises until we both held him, then he calmed down. Never did find out what he was upset about that time.

That is a very smart cat! I have never had a cat alert me to anything, but my grandmother has a Siamese that would attack strangers..lol. I know it wasn't funny to the strangers who saw teeth and claws though. That is an amazing story about your friend. Amazing. My little Eva protects me against impending doom when my b/f acts like he is going to "get me." I'm not so sure that she would be so brave against a stranger though.

I would love a cat like your "Lassie", sadly our landlord does not allow pets. Wow what a great cat you have, I really enjoyed your discussion makes me want to cry that I can't have a cat and I also would like a dog too. We may be moving to Arkansas and there I will be able to have as many as I want, lol, hoping to have one just like yours. I feel that cats are amazing and can be great pets/family members. I hope I can care and train them to be brave, caring and courageous.

Hi, Elic... Cats can be amazing animals, n'est ce pas? I still miss my Toby who was a stray I took in. He never "rescued" anyone but he was an amazing cat. In spring he would catch squirrels and such to eat so I saved, big time on cat food. I never had to have a litter box for him because he would go outside to do his "duty". If he got stuck inside and could no longer hold his water, he would go in the bathtub. His favorite perch was on my chest when I was watching TV from my recliner and when I brought my daughter home for the first time, oh-my-gosh! She was HIS baby! I have pictures of him licking her head, sleeping with her and drinking from the faucet while she brushed her teeth. I called Toby my "witch cat" because he was so uncanny in his wisdom and communicated with me so well. We were "soul mates". When I moved, he was no problem in the car or when we got to a new place. He's the only cat I've known who came to his name. When I stayed in a motel or at a friend's, I could just let him go outside and know that when it was time to leave, I just had to call his name and he would come running. I still miss him. He was most definitely the best cat I have ever had in my life! When my daughter was three, we ended up living in our van for a summer and Toby escaped when we were in a store shopping. We never saw him again.

LOL...Toby had quite the life story. He had been owned by a friend of mine but when she divorced her hubby, Toby got left behind in the trailer park. Hubby's new girlfriend was allergic so hubby put Toby out on his own. I don't know how long he was on his own...but it was a year after I moved in before I took him in. At first he was really nervous when he ate...I think he had been stealing food from the Rottweilers down the street. He had ear mites so bad, he had scratched holes in the backs of his ears. I had to keep him inside for two months while I treated the ear mites and kept an Elizabethan collar on him to keep him from scratching. No sooner did the collar come off and I let him outside but he got hit by a car. A week later he dragged himself home with a dislocated hip, broken pelvis and gas gangrene! I spent another $450 on him at the vet's (initially he had cost $150). I told him, "you better last me a good ten years and never need a vet again." Well, he lasted eight. I just wish we hadn't had to move into the van but we had been staying with my sister whose hubby hated me so we got put out onto the street. Toby was at least thirteen years old by then so he had had a good long life. I loved my Toby!

Toby with my Baby - Some babies such their thumbs...My daughter sucked on my cat!
Here's my daughter with Toby. She's sucking on his paw...and he's just purring up a storm! She could do anything she wanted to him, he would just take it and keep purring away. I have another shot somewhere of her sucking on his ear! And again he just kept on purring. He really loved my baby!

Lovely boy Pickles - He's always ready to help his friends. When he was a baby he would bleat to call out to me. He has a really gentle, soft bleat. These days, he head butts the back porch to get my attention.
It's not quite the same but when Lucy comes onto the back porch at brekky or dinner time or even just to see what is going on...Pickles will head butt the back porch till I come to open the door. Even if Banjo wants to come in and I don't come quickly enough, Pickles will start banging the heck out of things. I always thank him for letting me know and of course at meal times he and Tulip get a wheat cake each. You'd think he would be expecting a treat each time but he doesn't. He's my lovely, good boy.

That is so sweet Elic! Rygel is a sweet sensitive kitty! Awwwww, he needs an extra pet on his head for being such a sweetheart! My Siamese kitten PG has alerted me once to one of our cats, Big Boy who was stuck in the closet in the computer room one time. But nobody alerted us when she was stuck in the bathroom. But then, it was during the day when most are outside so she was in there for a few hours before we realized it. She's learned to come out before the door shuts. lol
