Wireless Internet In Australia.

Anyone out there in Australia have any experience with wireless broadband in the home? Good or bad companies, good service, bad service? We found out on Friday as we were moving house that the house we are moving into cannot get broadband internet other than wireless or satellite and both of these options we are not pleased about. We are only 5 minutes out of town and other houses further out have ADSL and we assumed this would be ADSL too. So, we did not check to make sure. The house was advertised as having broadband in every room, so we thought it would be great for us, but we were not thorough enough in checking this out when we first visited the house unfortunately. We knew that we would have to get slower internet as we have been on super fast cable for the last 5 years, but that was in the suburbs and now we will be living on an acreage in the hills. But we were shocked to find out that the internet connected to the house is satellite which there is no way we can use as it costs way too much and there is not enough downloads with the plans. So our best option is wireless I am afraid. I do not like it, but we will have to make do as the rest of the lifestyle changes regarding moving out there are beneficial to us. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have prepaid wireless (the one with a dongle) & that is great & my friend down the road has wireless on a plan...the type of wireless where you have a little box smaller than a mobile phone & you connect via that wirelessly (he has no home phone) & he said it's good...I think he pays about $80 a month & gets about 80gb...both are with optus...I find other than telstra, optus gives better coverage than other companies...my friend over the road has vodafone prepaid & gets crap service.

"$80 a month & gets about 80gb" Really! Are you sure? I will have to check that out. I looked at Optus and removed them from my short list as the plans I saw were nothing like that! I wonder about Virgin too as they go through the Optus network and we have our phones through them. We might be able to combine the plans or something. You have a dongle? Just what is a "dongle"? Sounds rude to me!

Maybe I'm wrong about the gb...maybe it's 40 or 60gb I will have to check...the dongle is the usb thing that you put into your computer to hook up to the net...have a sim card just like a mobile phone & that's how you access the net...I think they call it mobile broadband...Yeah, I know what you mean about the word "dongle"

I am an expert in wireless dongles now after mucking around with a few of them trying to get good service here over the last couple of weeks. WE finally have it sorted and have gone with Teltra. It was incredibly easy to set up and is really quite fast compared to Virgin which we tried first. We are paying more than we were with cable but it is so much nicer living out here that it is worth it.

Can't help you with your question Bill, sorry, but congrats on the move to acreage! You will love the lifestyle and the benefits will outweigh any downfalls. Where have you moved to? I probably know it, being an original Gold Coaster!

I know it - beautiful spot Bill yet stil not too far from town - best of both worlds! I'm sure you will enjoy it there (once you get your internet sorted out)!

We are out the back of Mudgeeraba just off the road to Springbrook. Awesome spot surrounded by mountains yet not too far from the town. So much nicer than Nerang! But we still have the Nerang house for another ten days which gives us plenty of time to still work online at that house (where I am now) and to clean out all the remaining stuff.

Springbrook? I've stayed there! Two weeks on top of the mountain for our honeymoon. Nearly fourty degrees on the Gold Coast, not a cloud in the sky, then drive up the mountain, freezing cold, fog so thick you could cut it with a knife & raining! Chopped my own firewood whilst listening to "four seasons in one day". Beautiful place in the rainforest, lots of ticks though.

I have satellite broadband and I had no idea it was expensive compared to other types...we have no choice where I am. We don't get mobile phone coverage here either even though Telstra insists that we do. I am with Skymesh and I was on one of the cheaper rates with a slow rate and 1000GB peak download and 2000GB off peak - each month I would receive a warning that I had used up my peak allowance and within days I would be slowed down but I didn't notice a huge difference.. I decided to upgrade recently and for $40 I'm getting double the speed with 2000GB peak and 2000 off peak. The thing is, I barely noticed the difference and only in one or two areas and I'm still getting the warning...this last on the 10th of this month. (it renews at the beginning of each month. The reason I upgraded was in an effort to be able to accomplish more and earn some extra money that would more than cover the extra i'm paying but it isn't happening...the joke is on me. Skymesh are based in Brisbane, just check their site to see their plans http://www.skymesh.com.au/plans/?show=satellite. Previously, with dial up I was with Westnet and even though I liked their customer service, I had heaps of problems with my connection, they do satellite broadband as well I think. The link above is not a referral link.

I forgot to mention, wireless can be dodgy unless you have a tower really close by.

Skymesh actually have reasonable rates and downloads compared to some of the others that we saw when we were looking at satellite. We decided to go with wireless as we are actually not all that far out of town and also with wireless we can take it with us to another house or out with us in our laptop. We tried out Virgin for a couple of weeks but had nothing but dramas with them so we got our money back and have now got the fastest wireless broadband modem available (apparently) from Testra. We are paying a lot more than we used to for cable but we are happier in this environment and the speed and reliability has been awesome so far.

Yes, I'm fine thanks - just haven't been to myLot for a while. Any move is an upheaval both physical & emotional but I'm sure that you have made the right decision and that it will all be beneficial for the whole family (once you sort your internet ) We've lived here for 23 years & I am getting more drawn to my 'dream' surroundings but I still need a serious culling of keepsakes and unnecessary bits & pieces

It has been a crazy few weeks but we are finally settled here now. Still have some sorting out to do and are still culling our belongings. It feels so much more free to have less stuff!

Thank you Wizzy. I have not seen you around for a while, I hope that you are well. It is a big move when you have to move out of somewhere you have lived for ten years and run a business from for 4 years. My children do not know living anywhere else and to them, it is home so they have been going through some emotional stuff, but we are all looking forward to the future.

Sorry Bill, can't help here. I'm in a street full of elderly retired people & the whole area doesn't have internet. I use work's ADSL2 while my wife is using her parents'. We might not even have internet access after I move. Even if we did, my wife believes it is a relationship-killer & won't allow it, claiming also that we can't afford it. Reckon my days are numbered on My Lot. Have you looked into satellite? I hear it works well in regional areas. Hope the move works out well for you.

The house is set up for satellite but at it is not cheap and no one has any plans with enough gigs in them! We might just have to adjust our lives a little and save the internet for work stuff only! Might have to go out kayaking more seeing as there is a boat ramp to the dam within a few minutes drive!

We are only renting for now...long story, but basically one step back in order to take two steps forward eventually. So, we are not stuck in the house forever if we cannot make it work. I grew up around kayaking as my dad competed heavily in it during my childhood. So we spent many holidays at races on rivers throughout Victoria and southern NSW. I just have a plastic one at the moment which is fun on the beaches, but I might eventually get something fibreglass and faster in the water. Are you into kayaking too? Springbrook is awesome, but soooo damp....funny that as it is in a rainforest! I have never had ticks there, but plenty of leeches!

Or you could take the buggers who sold you the house to court - both the agents & the owners & get free internet from the proceeds? That sounds messy though. You're into kyaking? I never knew!

Hi there I am in the same situation. I had ADSL in Sydney and went bush. I did spend 3 years on dial up with a connection of 30kbps. Because that is all you get if your are more than 15km from the exchange. When I moved in this new place, dial up was the same. Satellite is too expensive and useless if you are a heavy internet user. But since the mobile phone worked in this new location, I decided to try wireless because anything would be better than dial up. I thought, even if I only get 256kbps, it is a lot better than 30kbps. The neighbour 500m away has ADSL. But they won't give it to me because it is an old phone line. And Telstra do not replace old phone lines. Not even in Sydney. So I got wireless with a 3GB plan. It works most of the time, and I don't get less than 512kbps. When too many tourists come into town for the weekend with their mobile phones, the tower cannot cope and I lose the signal. This is the case this weekend. But it does not happen too often. The only thing is, forget about downloading stuff on a 3GB plan. I use 1.5GB just surfing the net without downloading anything. Forget about watching Youtube videos as well. Or your 3GB will last you one week.

Sorry about the delay in replying to you. In all the confusion of setting up our new house and being crazily busy, I kept forgetting to come back to this discussion! We trialled a prepaid Virgin modem for a week, but it was painful to set up, slow to use and kept dropping out. We ended up going with the Telstra Ultimate modem which is apparently the fastest wireless modem in Australia. We got one each. 12g for me and 20 for my wife. As I have not been online as much recently as I normally am, I have not come close to using this amount. Neither has my wife, but we can change our plan up and down as we feel the need so we will see how this month pans out and change down if we feel we can.

I have ADSL where I live but I do use mobile broadband when I am out and about via a prepaid USB stick. I was quite happy with it until I travelled to country Victoria and discovered Vodafone was providing me with neither mobile phone connection nor the Internet! Telstra is the one that you can use virtually anywhere but, alas, they are more expensive! Congratulations on the move, it is exciting to make good changes like that. Once you get your Internet sorted it will be all systems go!

Thanks for the feedback Paula. Vodafone was not even on my list of companies to consider as I have heard too many bad things about them lately. Telstra is usually pretty good and well worth the extra money to get proper service I think. Their maximum downloads is a little less than some of the others but it should be more reliable.

Yes, I am worried about the speed that we will have to contend with as we are used to having really fast cable broadband.
