Dentist - How well do you know your dentist

Ok so I need to go to the dentist and I thought for sure that Id have an appointment in 6 months since its over a year if you want to see a doctor and its the same with dentists. So I called this morning knowing that in 6 month's time will be fine for me. I was so surprised when the receptionist asked me what time I wanted and when. So half laughing I said "how about next Thursday at 11AM?" Thinking she would start laughing also and saying that she could give me a Thursday at 11AM in December!!! She said ok. I was sort of speechless for a few seconds and then I just said "ok thanks". So I hang up and right away I think.....oh shoot...hubby is working on Thursday and we dont leave the dog home alone and it'll be too hot to let him wait in the SUV. So I call back and ask if my appointment can be moved to another day. Again she asks me what time and when. I say Monday at 11AM maybe, thinking that the Thursday had someone cancelling and that Id surely have to wait until December now. "fine" she says. . I havent been to this dentist before. I always go to the same dentist I had since I was a kid but now he's retired and I have to find a new one. So instead of going back where I used to live, which is a 1hr drive, I should find someone nearby at 5 mins. I dont know this dentist and now Im wondering if the fact that he's not that busy means that he's not that good. I did a bit of research and couldnt find anything on him. So maybe he's just out of school? Would that be a good thing? What would you do? Im thinking that I can walk in and if I dont feel comfortable with him, I can always walk right out. Im there for a check up only. So have you ever had this happen to you before?

I think dental care is often not covered by insurance and with times being tough many people are finding that they can cut back on that care. I know my dentist is suffering some from that.

I think you might be right. Maybe many cant afford it and since its more important to eat and pay the mortgage, dental care must come last on the list. Thanks!

I hear for the first time that you have to make an appointment so early! I always make dentist or doctors appointments for the same or the next week! People are so lazy these days that they go to the dentist when it start to hurt! So you could go to the dentist even in the same day

Oh I know some will go only when it hurts bad. Not me, Id rather go in for a checkup so that if there is something wrong, it can be fixed right away. Happy for you that you do the same. Thanks for replying!

Hi there, I too get surprises like that and when I am asked what time, thinking like you that they will be sooo busy I always say what is good for you. lol But my thought here is that perhaps dentists are not as buys as before, most dental insurance plans have limitations with coverage and my thoughts here is that maybe not enough are visiting as often. We don't have dental coverage here at home, although we do go regularly. We just have to plan like the dentists schedule far in advance. lol Can you go online and see with a dental association as to what credentials he has? I know we can do this wight doctors in the department of regulations. It does list graduation date and if there are any complaints. We go to one for many years and are very pleased with ours, he use to be really busy, but always made exceptions for emergencies. Now it does seem like there are flexibilities with his schedule.

I dont have insurance for dental coverage. I did find his name in the Canadian Dental Association but there are no reviews??!?!? I'll email them to ask about this dentist. Good for you to be able to get an appointment when theres an emergency. Thanks for sharing!
