The maid - The maid did it!

Thats what we're starting to think now. Ever since mom died 5 yrs ago, my sister, my 2 brothers and myself have started to sort of take care of dad. He's 85 yrs old but he's very active, still drives, still works in the summer at the Golf Course. So Im in charge of doing the cooking, the washing and some cleaning. But lately, its become too much for me to take care of 2 big houses. So I asked dad if it would be ok to get a maid maybe once every 2 weeks and Id do the small stuff. She could do the vacuuming and the dusting and the windows. I can take care of the kitchen and the bathrooms. My other sister takes care of the paper stuff. Insurance, doctor appointments, income taxes, stuff like that. One of my brother takes care of taking dad shopping when he needs clothes or pills or personal hygiene stuff. My other brother takes care of installations. He'll install the a/c in the spring and take it out in the fall. He installs xmas lights, fixes things when they break. Someone is hired to do the snow removal and cut the grass. Phew!! So since the maid started, dad's cordless vacuum broke, his microwave stopped working, his phone's screen went blank and so many little things that break all the time. We found out that the phone's screen went blank because it was probably soaked in liquid. So did the maid tried to wash it and sort of flooded it? Same with the cordless vacuum that dad uses to pick up crumbs on the table, was it left too long out of its socket? Maybe the same thing happened with the microwave? Then dad's other cordless phone just stopped working. It wouldnt charge anymore. So every time something breaks, my brother goes shopping with dad and we usually can find a holiday that'll be coming soon and we all pay for it. Like 2 weeks ago, the cordless vacuum stopped working, so my brother bought another one and we told dad it would be his gift for father's day. Of course we'll buy him something else since the tiny vacuum is not that expensive. I wish I had a maid and then I would know if its normal for stuff to just break once you have a maid around lol. Does anyone know if having a maid can be hazardous to your belongings???

That usually happens when the maid we hire wasn't oriented well on how those equipments at home, operates. Had i been in your shoes, i would get a replacement for the maid. I dare not risk my house for a faulty operation by the maid of a mechanical equipment at home .

She doesnt use the things she breaks....she cleans them. She's using a big vacuum for the house and Im thinking she might be a bit rough with things she cleans.....probably wanting to do it all faster. Im afraid getting rid of her is not an option because its not easy to find a maid that cleans very well. She cleans SUPER well. I'll have a talk with her instead I think. Thanks!!

I think maybe you should have had an orientation with the maid since her first day so that there will be less problems. Tell her what's her regular tasks, things she shouldn't do, how to operate things properly, and how not to break things. That way she won't have problems breaking things.

You're right, we should have done that the first time to let her know what to do or not do. I have had a talk with her and all is fine now. She uses a sprayer and she might have sprayed some cleaning product at places she shouldnt have. She will now use a damp cloth instead for anything electronic or plugged in. Thank you!!

Yes having maid is hazardous for the things in your life. I lost my mobile , my mixer broke down and so many items went missing and resurfaced my maid's house...lolz. Be careful and change the maid before you loose something. Change the maid for your father poor thing he has another headache at his age to take care of with the sloppy maid.Call the service you have hired the maid from and change it. Just be sure the stuff you are talking about is not as ancient as your father ..lolz. Sorry for calling him ancient but its amazing the way he is active at his age too. Reminds me of my grand pa he was active till his last breadth and such fun especially due to his Alzheimer when he forgot all of us

Im sorry your grandfather had Alzheimer but you seem to have found the positive in his condition lol. No the things that are broken arent ancient. It doesnt really bother him, he just tells us and WE, the kids have to get him new ones. haha!! She does clean really good and maids in dad's area are not easy to find. She came recommended by one of my aunt. So I'll have a talk with her because she doesnt even know she's breaking things. As for stuff missing.....no nothing missing!! Sorry you had problems with maids. Sounds like one of them had very long fingers!! Thank you for sharing!

Someone ask the maid, don't accuse, just question how she would clean the phone and where she thinks the vacuum is stored. She may not be familar with the newer items. Give her the benefit of the doubt and then if you are not satisfied get a new maid. You cant's afford to keep replacing things. Good luck

Im not planning on accusing her of anything. Its not easy to find a good maid where dad lives. She does clean really good. She doesnt use the tiny hand vacuum, that is for dad after he has breakfast to pick up the crumbs haha. I think she uses too much Fantatisk or something like that. I will talk to her and ask her how she does it. Thanks!

Firstly I am very happy to hear that you father is very active. I have never had a maid so not sure if it is normal, the only thing I can say is that it sounds like the items are breaking down too soon and continually too close of a time. Maybe the maid is a bit careless or too rough. Although I wonder if the items are very old and coincidental. But my heart of hearts says the maid is being too rough as I can understand one thing but so many, hmmm I would probably watch her one day how she handles any appliances in the home to see if there is anything unusual. This way no hard feelings if she actually is not doing anything wrong.

Ive never had a maid either, cant afford one but dad can, so good for him and it makes less work for me Im working when she's at dad's and dad will NOT stay home when she's there. She came highly recommended and she does the cleaning SUPER well. Ive checked a few strategic places, ran my finger and no dust. I do believe she might be the rough and tough type lol. She used to go to one of my aunts and apparently she had things breaking also. No the little vacuum wasnt old nor the phone. Its not so bad, at least she does the job well. Id rather have a talk with her instead of sneak in on her. Thanks for replying!!

Actually, YES. Having a maid can be hazardous to your belongings. Since i was very young i have seen maids destroyed my mom's precious appliances at home. My mom is very keen in giving instructions on how to use those appliances carefully but i guess the maids were just too scared to ask mom for further questions or they were just plain stupid. Until now maids are still prone to breaking things around the house but we have come to accept the fact that we really can't help it nor control it at all. But sometimes i cannot help but get angry especially when i have given specific instructions on how to care for those things.

Lucky you to have maids around, how I wish I could afford one. Well we havent really talked to the maid since she was referred by one of my aunts and we know she's honest and does a very good job with the cleaning. I think its about time one of us had a talk with her. We didnt even tell her how to clean things, we just let her do it!! Thanks for the advice!!
