Good day mylotters! Yesterday afternoon, as I was outside at balcony checking our garden down below, I saw something bright yellow sitting on the soil. It was obviously a canary, but thing is was it alive or dead? We live in a rural area, where such birds only exist in cages. Canaries are common pets here. I went to check it closely, it was moving but it was terrified. I caught it without difficulty and brought it at home. It didn't take me long to realize that the bird did not have one foot. The leg was there, but where its nails should begin, it had none. The other leg was OK, though its nails were huge. By the time I noticed the bird is hurt, I knew I could not let it outside. Because, things are simple. If it is left outside, cats will eat it. This is not a jungle where it can fly away, find a pair and reproduce. So, even though I was very sad to imprison it again, I decided to buy a cage and keep it. What would you do if you were in my shoes? Would you leave it outside, thinking it is free, without caring if it even lasted one day? It was obvious the canary could not fly well, because it hasn't flown ever in his whole life. His wings are a bit hurt too, I guess form his attempts to stay stable with only one foot touching the ground. Isn't it weird why the bird was set free? It is obvious such bird cannot live here outside cage. Who would leave it outside to die with one foot only? Who is that pet owner who decided to set it free? Anyway, I would like to hear other people opinions on this. What would YOU do?

Hello Makatas, and good for you for taking the bird with you, I used to feed a little sparrow with one leg that came to my house, I usually leave seeds and fruits next to my room window, and many birds come to eat all mornings. The bird was free, but the point is that having only one leg, is not a problem for the bird to live. I do recomend you to take him to a veterinary, or bird breeder, to get his nails cut, because it can give him problems.

I am very happy to ear good news, and I am very happy for Leonidas too, I think he was very lucky, finding a new family, and you to, finding a new companion.

Sorry for the delay. I have a dog but it is not in the house I currently reside which is inside a city. The dog is at our countryhouse where my brother stays year long. It is of a hunter's breed, but not trained to accompany a hunter. That doesn't make her less cute or less useful, though.

I would have taken it in but then I would have to research it online and call a vet or a pet store that sells birds because I dont know alot about birds. That was good of you to take it in and keep it. good luck.

Well this kind of birds does not need special care. I knew already how they are treated because we used to have many in the family years ago.

You're surely a kind-hearted individual, the canary is so lucky to have you as its new owner. I'll do the same thing as what you did to the canary. It's not fair to leave a hurt living out of nowhere just to die. I mean, though it's a bird it has still some right of respect. I don't know what's the reason behind the rejection of the owner to that canary but he/she should have given the canary to those individuals who are much interested in taking care of poor animals. Just continue nursing the canary, at least on that part you have lessen the pain it feels. You're such a great citizen!

Thank you for your nice words. Thing is I do feel a bit sad because here the canary cannot leave completely free, it will still be caged for the whole of its life.
