A tomato a day...is this true?

Someone at work the other day made a comment to me about nutrition and said that he had gone to see one just the week before to get a diet and health plan sorted out. Well his doctor told him that if he ate a tomato (regular size and just a regular old red tomato) once a day the acids in said tomato would counteract his regular junk food and beer intake and help him be healthier. Now this doesn't necessarily help him or the rest of us lose weight...The acids just help to get rid of a lot of the chemicals our bodies get from all that bad food we eat regularly. On the flip side of thew coin, I personally know that all those acids could hurt your stomach or give you diarrhea if you're body just isn't equipped for them. So maybe once every two days could still do the trick. :) I'm going to try this out myself and see how I feel after a few weeks. Has anyone else ever heard of this, done it or thinks there's further evidence to make it worthless? Thanks fellow mylotters :)

I'm sure it's true... but it also sounds about as useful as saying "If you drink a glass of water, you won't die of dehydration." It's not really going to help him get fitter or healthier! I assume the doctor gave him a better plan that just that piece of information?

I think, what your doctor said is false, but tomatoes are good for other things. Tomatoes are very helpful in diet as a duretic properties. Apply in diets for kidney disease, hypertension, more sour varieties - diabetes in cardiovascular diseases. Men should consume large quantities of tomatoes to prevent prostate disease. A glass of tomato juice can deliver half of the human daily dose of vitamin A and vitamin C. It is advisable to drink fresh tomato juice, but it can be successfully preserved. Furthermore, it is considered that tomato juice is good food for diseases with impaired metabolism, such as arthritis, obesity, diabetes. It is recommended to drink daily 200 ml tomato juice 30 minutes before eating, where a disease such as gastritis with low acidity, ulcers of the stomach or duodenum, severe exhaustion of the body. Pasteurized and well kept tomato juice retains its vitamin content for two years with minimal losses.

Tomatoes are really healthy and I don't think that eating one daily would be harmful (unless your stomach is really acid-sensitive). On the other hand, if it sounds too good to be true, it is. Eating a tomato daily would certainly have some benefits but there is no way that it will outweigh the ill effects of a diet that is poor overall. There is no magic fix that will let you eat a lot of junk food and stay healthy, and if the nutritionist is suggesting that there is then he or she probably should not be practicing. If you want to be rid of harmful chemicals and unhealthy ingredients, you just need to eat a healthier diet, period. Eating a fresh tomato daily would be a good step, but eating a variety of more fruits and vegetables would be a lot more beneficial.

That sounds very interesting. Of course, fruits and vegetables do have very unique herbal values. But, for tomato , sounds pretty new to me. I have not heard "a tomato a day, keeps the doctor away". What I have heard some thing like that is another fruit ! You know what I mean , right ?
