Hands ... oh those hands!

Okay, I absolutely hate trying to draw hands. Of course, most artists have problems with this and I keep looking for an 'easier' way ... there isn't any. There just isn't. I'm going to have to buckle down and really get some good practicing in, in order to master the art of drawing hands. Does anyone have any pointers on hands? Maybe a certain aspect of the hand that you start from, or something that helps you get proportions right?

Hi, Arkine If you like reading, I could suggest this book "Draw Real Hands! by Lee Hammond". It has great reviews, I personally don't have it. But if you really like to learn something go with the context. Books are the most powerful learning tool you could ever had.

Wow... I didn't know "most artists have problems with this" as you said. I have no problems with hands. I LOVE drawing hands. Pointers? Hmmmm... Nope HAHAHA I don't know what it is, I just have a fixation on hands that makes them fun for me to draw. I guess you could try practicing on your own hand... you know, that old standard picture of your fist with your thumb raised? I do that sometimes if I am drawing from memory or without a photo to copy, so I can how the muscles move in certain positions. I don't know if it's helpful to see someone else's drawings but here are some of mine...it's just a link to all of my drawings on DeviantArt but six out of the nine have hands in them ... the AraƱa drawings are really old; I've practiced more since then. http://eiresfire.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=/traditional/drawings/people/

The one good thing about drawing hands...you always have a model nearby! (The other hand you aren't using to draw with!) It is great practice trying to draw your own hand in different positions and holding different objects. It is also helpful to look at how different artists draw hands, especially comic style artists who often simplify the hand, you can see a variety of styles of drawing more simple hands this way.

I use to have difficulty painting hands too, it's just practice with pencil and yes there's a book that deals specifically with drawing hands. It's very fulfilling if you overcome this, I use to paint realistic style long before the digital age so it had so much details that if the veins are showing then you have to do a technique that would show even the tiny veins, I remember the first paintings I did, I sort of hide the hands with things like fabric or plants

I have also some problems in drawing hands long time ago and through practice I was able to perfect(well not totally perfect) the proportions of hands and their gestures. I usually made my hand as a model then started to draw, then sometimes in front of the mirror for other angles... Sometimes I search from the internet of other hand gestures and tried to copy it and practice...
