Our family will be going to a food bank this summer

I'm afraid of being judged by the food bank workers. Seriously, we've had many people who were volunteers in various food banks complain about people coming in with BlackBerrys, car keys, smoking cigarettes as they wait outside, that sort of thing, and we fall into that category. I have my BlackBerry for medical reasons (we get a $25/month help form Dept of Community Services) because myself and my 2 kids are disabled and are constantly meeting with specialists. I'm also in constant communication with my children's intinarent teachers, teachers' aids (teacher that help with special needs children), so ya, I do need my cell phone. (btw it was FREE with a 3 year contract) My husband has a basic cell phone for work as he's on call even in the middle of the day from his employer every single day. We don't have a landline. Car keys - well, we have a family van, a cheap one, too, but we hardly use it, we're normally biking or walking, to save on gas. Smoking - well, I'm off the hook for that LOL Why will we be going to need assistance in July and August? Because shcool's out and Hubby won't be working, and the way the cheques are issued, it's usually 2-3 weeks behind, which screws up our welfare payments. Complicated story there, but they report income from the 14th-15th of each month. Then we get a full cheque in September LOL, crazy how things all work out that way. And Hubby goes back to work in September. BTW, food bank workers, we're still paying off the debt from the pyramid scheme we got into after a close family friend promised that we'll be getting off of welfare in about 3 months into the business. So please don't judge us. We're very careful with our spending, big time.

Being judged is something many fear at one time or another. Those who judge are not very secure themselves. They will use others to boost their own weak self confidence and that is just not right. I say they are bullies and wimps. However, those who work at food banks are usually pretty compassionate, caring people. Otherwise they would not use their time volunteering. Many have had their own problems/tragedies and understand hard times. I would say just try to desensitize and practice not feeling badly. Remind yourself that what others think does not define you and in actuality they have a much bigger problem than you if they choose to judge. Best wishes to you.

Even if they have a legit concern, it doesn't apply to you. I think I would be tempted to remind those criticizing that until one actually knows the circumstances, it's not fair to criticize. After all we all could be criticized for something. No one will have 100% approval from everyone on everything they do.

I can relate to this story and even thou my children do not live with me it feels even more important to keep in contact with them (i've disconnected my home phone to save money) I do think i am better off then some people even thou It costs more money to live on my own, but i also find the cost of rent is too expensive to live with anyone around me either !!! it seems that i have only been to food banks a couple of times and i am not working but that doesn't stop me trying to better myself and try and gain some employment or keep up doing my part time business. i'm embarrassed to goto a food bank but theres not much option . i don't get any extra money when i do look after my children but they are my priority and a lot more money i spend when they are with me so that they are fed which takes money away from the debt collectors that are constantly expecting me to pay them money that i do not have ! i don't feel i should have to explain to them why i don't have the money because they don't listen any-way. hmm it's not like i asked to be in the food bank line and i can gain employment from 300 km's away which is in the closest capital city but that means what do i do with my belongings, it's hard sometimes to live my dreams of earning a decent wage and eventually supporting my kids that i want to live with me. I guess what it comes down to is how much are we willing to give up to accept others for what their efforts are and try and live in their shoes instead of being selfish of our own situations. think twice people, we don't always find it easy to make the right choices to make the way of living better, and we don't always accept that some situations JUST HAPPEN !!! god bless to you all. keep safe and think of how others feel befor you judge them.

Yes, things do happen, and what people dont' realise is the nice things I do have, they were GIVEN to me as gifts. (Well, it goes for anyone, really.) Don't get me wrong, I don't like going to food banks, and neither does Hubby. And in a way I feel like I should pay the consequences because I got my family into debt with the Monavie/TEAM pyramid scheme 2 years ago. It'll be 2 years ago this August that I signed up (only to quit 7 months later with totally maxed out credit and not a single recruit. So in a way, why should the public be responsible for our own stupid choices? I know it sounds harsh, but these thoughts are going through my mind. Plus I was so "into" paying down my debt as fast that I can that I forgot to save up for summer except for my utility bills, which is paid in full for the month of August. *sigh* So many emotions and feelings...I dunno :-s

I agree with you 100%. People are way too quick to judge when it comes to something like this. They don't know your situation. Just consider the source of the ignorance and hold your head high.

I guess nobody knows exactly what each other's going through unless we're living in the same unit, but I guess my issue is that some of their concerns could very well be legitimate as there's many people who abuse the welfare system, but on the other hand, that makes people who are truly in need like us self-conscious.

I would never be judgmental on anyone going to a food bank. See there are some people who actually had good paying jobs and lost them. Therefore, what they obtained prior to their loss of earnings cannot be held against them. Sure they can try and sell off a few things to try and make amends, but with everything in life, no one should judge a book by it's cover. As for the smoking and junk food, I suppose they can make changes there, as once they are not able to pay for them, can't see why those would be important.

Hubby and I are definitely against smoking, and the junk food, I agree, people can live without the junk food, for sure. We all can. :-p
