Are our discussions supposed to start as questions?

I didn't see anything in the rules against starting a discussion by ranting or making a statement, but I thought some people had been criticized for not asking a question. Does anyone know where I am getting this confusion from? Is it okay to just write a four or five paragraph article on here and not even ask a question? Personally, does it help you wanting to join a discussion if it is a question? Or maybe vice-versa?

Hello BalthasarTheRat, I don't think we shouldn't start discussions unless they contain a question. As long as you think there are people who might be interested in discussing that subject, I can't see why you could not create a topic with only four or five paragraphs, with no question. I think putting a question into the topic helps atracting more responses but it is OK if you get only two respondents but with quality contribution to the discussion. Of course, you must contribute, too, by commenting their responses to make the topic go further, by that turning it into a real discussion.

It could discourage many users who are only after the money here. But, as I said, if there are only a few responses that you can discuss further, I feel it is enough. I mean, a conversation could be a very good one if there are only two people involved, as well as it could be a good discussion with 10 people involved.

It's okay if you want to write down some statements even without asking a question. But, I look at it this way. if you don't ask anything (at least an opinion), then what to discuss? That's why, at the end of the discussion usually there's a question to answer, like asking agreement or something like that. I mean, there's nothing to ask, then what to discuss?

I don't think asking for agreement would be a good idea, because some querulous myLotter could categorize the discussion as a "poll type discussion". Instead of it, "what's your opinion on this subject?" might be a better idea.

It makes sense to me that even a rant should include a question afterward if you want any conversation.

There are a lot of people on here that need to get stuff off their mind and need some advice. Even if there is no question that does not mean that they do not want you to comment on how they are feeling or what they are going through. A lot of the times I try to give people advice to the best of my knowledge to try and help them feel better about the situation. Usually the post that have a story or some sort of problem where people start off in a rant get more responses because people are caring and they want to make sure that person knows that there are people here who will listen and care about their problems with them.

Always good to help one another out here. I guess anything that brings another person to give you advice or support has to be a good thing.

You can diffently start a discussion without a question. Just put something catchy as the title to get people's curiousity up. You want them to respond to your discussions. Hope this is helpful. Best Wishes.

It doesn't specifically say in the rules that your would need to start your new discusiions with a question. You'll just have to write a very catchy title so that other users will get curious and would comment in it. Good luck

I think It's really up to you if you want to start a discussion with a question or not.I think most lotters make some questions in order to start a conversation to other lotters and the lotters that would like to respond will not have the hard time in replying to the discussion because they they where ask on their opinion.I think it's okay to just write 4 or five paragraph on the article and not necessarily to start on a question.A lot of my lotter friends did that so it's okay..
