How cruel and awful is this?

I was reading an article in my state that dogs that go to shelters because their owner doesn't want them anymore for whatever reason are killed in the most inhumane way I have ever seen in my life! I am so upset reading this and I hope people wake up and don't get a pet if they can't afford it or think they might not want it in the future. Especially in NC!! Listen to this... The article said that in kill shelters they heart stick with poison arrows and use gas chambers to put the pets down after they have only been there for 3 days!! That is not much time at all. =( Yes this is true in my state. They also do this in Georgia and Louisiana!! How awful is this? How inhumane can people be? I am so angry about this!

.Like others have said, it may be exaggerated quite a bit as there are easier cheaper ways than gas chambers. I'm from Louisiana and I haven't heard about kill shelters here in years. We do have an abundance of stray dogs and cats, but most animals are in overpopulated foster homes or too crowded humane shelters. What's bad here are the pit bull dog fights. Those animals are put down because of trained aggression, not because no one has had the chance to adopt though. But since Michael vick, the dogs are more likely to be rehabilitated.

Thanks for your response! I hope and pray that it is exaggerated to be honest. In this state nothing would surprise me to be honest with you. I'm glad you haven't heard of these shelters there! That makes me feel better. I do have a friend that works in a kill shelter here and she did say that they do only have 3 days from when they get in the door. And she said for a "Bully" breed as they call it they only have 2 days from when they arrive =(. Some bully breeds can be nice, it's how they are raised so that makes me feel soo bad for them! I have a Rottweiler (Bully Breed) and she is nicer than my Lab! So it's not always fair to judge them.

Yeah, I know how that is. We have 3 dogs, one of which is a pit bull. He is the sweetest dog I've ever had. He thinks he's a little lap dog or something cuz that's where he wants to be. He's even afraid of lightning and thunder the poor thing. But that's horrible those dog breeds only have 2 days. I think kill shelters should be illegal and spaying/neutering should be free.

In IN, dogs are put down more humanely by injection after longer periods of time. About ten years ago, my family adopted my beloved dog Baxter from a local shelter. He had spent a month there looking sad and miserable in a cage after spending his first year on the streets as a stray. He wasn't mistreated, but there were so many animals there that he didn't always get the attention he needed, and we decided to adopt him right away. Anyway, it breaks my heart to see animals being mistreated and killed awfully. 3 days is not nearly enough time to allow for anyone to adopt a pet; that is horrible.

Thanks for your response! I know that here they do only have 3 days, which is terrible! I do know that because when we went to one of the shelters here they told us the one we were interested in only had until Thursday and the lady told us he only got there on Monday!! I thought that was bad enough, then reading this article I was shocked. I really hope it is untrue but here nothing would surprise me!

Also, when we adopted him there was a requirement to have him neutered right away, which we did.

Animal cruelty should be punishable by law but what if lawmaker were the one doing such action? this is also happening in my country, people who dos not know how to take care of their pets, people who are irresponsible, and people who does fear GOD and does not value the life of everyone. We are the one who should take care of them but then most people were just cruel... I hope this will end soon and everybody will come to realize how important animals play their role to us..

Thanks for your response! I agree that animal cruelty should be stopped. It is wrong no matter how you look at it and they cannot speak up for themselves.

This can be true or false depending where you live. 50 percent of pets purchased today are done on a whim. They go out getting a dog, cat or any other pet thinking that the pet they buy will be the one the see on Tv, the internet or walking down the street. It will be the perfect pet. No training, it will train itself. It will clean up after itself or use the toilet. Fedd itself and of coarse groom itself and drive to the vets. Most people DON,T THINK before they buy a pet that it takes alot of time, money and effort to care for a pet. Now when the pet has to tkae all this time and trouble just like another part of the family it's time to go , they will get rid of it most times the quickest way..

Yeah, I live in NC which I have heard is one of the most cruel states to pets. . I'm not sure if this is true either. I sure hope not. Your right most people do not think about all is involved when getting a pet. I have 2 dogs and I cannot imagine just giving them up. They are part of the family, I feel like they are my kids too.

People who do not know how to take care of pets should not be allowed to purchase or even get an animal as their pet. Taking home a pet is a big responsibility and pet owners should learn how to give these pets the love, attention and care that they deserve.

Thanks for your response! I agree that some people should not have pets...or kids for that matter but that's another discussion all together sorry.

people's conscience has slowly been erased.. their hearts are like stones.. :( i sort of saw something worst, they were skinned alive for their fur.. :( i couldnt watch it anymore because i could not imagine the pain they experienced.. it is really awful that i could say i dont mind if the world will end, everything gone, i dont mind at all because this world has been so cruel, and the people are so greedy, only i pray that God will take my life and my loved ones life in a snap that we wont even notice.. after all this life is just borrowed..

I agree this is awful, and how much more would it cost to house them a couple more weeks to see if they can be adopted. However I believe it is also inhumane at the way people do not fix their pets so that there is not an abundance of pets that need to be cared for. It is not that expensive to have an animal spayed or neutered and would solve a lot of these issues. I think their should be legislation saying animals have to be spayed or neutered unless you are a proven breeder.

Thanks for your response! I agree with you that if there were more people getting their dogs fixed or keeping them away from other dogs so they couldn't have babies that would eliminate many problems! Even proven breeders, I have to say that I don't like some things I hear about them either. I know it's feeding them and paying their bills but there are not enough homes to be bringing more puppies into this world! It's a real shame...

This sounds awful, but you have to also consider that dramatic news stories get more attention - the accounts may well be exaggerated. No matter what happens to the animals in shelters, the fact is, getting a pet is a huge responsibility and people don't seem to consider that. In cases without genuine fault (for example i know a family who had a dog for about five years, then the youngest sister was born with an allergy), it's still important to think if you could find a home for a pet, rather than dumping them in a shelter. Then you know the pet is with a nice family, happy in a suitable environment...God knows what'll happen if you leave them in a shelter. I agree with you; I hope people will think about the long term responsibility getting a pet involves. I'd be really interested in reading that article though.

Thanks for your response! I did try to copy and paste the article here but I haven't been here long enough to be able to do it =( Otherwise it would have been up here. I did ask someone that manages a shelter about it and she did say it's true. She said they do whatever they have to do to make room for more animals. How horrible! =(

that is not only with dogs. it's with all the animalls. Sometime ago i saw this video that shocked me. I wasnt only reading, it was seing, witch is why you may not want to see this video. It shows how companies across the USA kill the animals so that we can eat. It's pretty distubing, and if you are sencible, just experiment seing the first minute or so. Here's the video www.meatvideo.com.

Thanks for your response! I really don't think I can handle watching that video. Thanks for putting it up but I am just too emotional right now to watch. Maybe another day.
