Lately there are so many cooking shows on tv that you'd think that everybody is cooking at home. Well it happens that NO, most people arent. The majority buy prepared food. I couldnt believe the stats about this but hubby is working at a store where they prepare just about any type of food. Brochettes, pizza, roast, casseroles, they have a menu of 30 prepared meals. They are not cheap and Id go broke if I had to rely on that type of food only. So why is it so fashionable right now to have so many cooking shows? Why would people watch these shows if they arent cooking? Do you watch cooking shows? Do you cook at home or buy prepared foods?

I watch only one cooking show, and it is more a mix between a cooking contest and a reality show. Personally I like to cook, and I cook every day, but I buy also frozen and canned food. Some dishes are too long to prepare : a cassoulet needs 3 to 4 hours, and only 10 mn when I buy it in a box, so I do a "true" one rarely.

So when I show up at your doorstep and force you to have so much fun that it will no doubt raze the church next door, I now find out that I will be forced to dine on boxed meals?! Humpphfff ... I can stay on my side of the world and do that.

Same for me Purplealabaster.....here I was thinking I could go to Topffer for some cassoulet and have the real thing.....oh well!! I can understand some people not having the time to cook if it takes so long to cook one dish. I work from home, so I have all the time in the world. Ive never baked a cassoulet before though. I might have to look for a good recipe or maybe TOPFFER can share hers with me (if we're allowed to post recipes on here that is!!) Thanks for sharing !!

There is a lot of recipes available online, but I have not been able to make a true cassoulet in England. I found some "coco" haricot beans -- I make my cassoulet with "lingot" haricot beans, but "coco" is good too and I found some in England --, but it was impossible to find smoke sausages from Toulouse : I made a cassoulet with a canned box of confit of duck, pork meat, sausages and saindoux. It was not far from the real one, but not exactly...

I do not like to cook nor do I like to watch cooking shows. My little one, on the other hand, is obsessed with them, and she is barely four years old. She started watching them with my brother, because he likes them, and now if even a commercial comes on that has anything to do with cooking she will not let me change the channel until it is over. By the way, I do not like cooking, but I am actually very good at it, which does not really make that much sense I know. I used to like cooking, so that is probably why I am good at it. After a while, though, it just became a hassle and now I really can't stand it.

I think you are probably right. I had to cook most of my life, so I think that I just got tired of it, especially when I had to cook for a fairly large (and sometimes picky) family. I refused to cook separate meals for everybody, so it was sometimes difficult to find something that would make everybody happy ... or at least not too miserable. My little one already tells me how to cook. She is adorable, because when she is sitting at the table eating she will taste the food and say "This needs more spices" and pretend to pick up whatever spices she thinks it needs and pretend to put them into the meal. Then she will taste it again and say "just right".

I guess your little one will not only be a chef later in life but a comedian also . My mom used to make separate meals for all of us when we were young....no wonder she hated cooking so much.....but she was a great cook. Thanks!

It does make sense. My mom was a great cook and she hated it because she had to do it all the time and we were 4 kids. She dreaded every meal, wondering what she'd make and she hated that. I felt that way also a while back when I was working outside the home but now that I work at home, Im starting to enjoy it again because I have the time to do it. Well, sounds like your little one will be the next big Chef then......You will have to let her try her hand at cooking and then SHE would be doing the cooking at home for you haha!! Thanks for sharing!

Mostly we cook at home. We are buying a prepared pizza from a gas station tonight, courtesy of another discussion. Maybe watching cooking shows makes people feel like they are having the experience vicariously. They imagine that they are good cooks. Or they like to talk about food as if they know all about it and they like to show off their knowledge.

My brothers really like watching cooking shows. They are very much into cooking, and they get a lot of their recipes and/or new ideas for spicing up meals that they already cook from these shows. They do not do cookbooks, although I think that they have referenced them once or twice, because it is difficult for them to follow the cookbooks. If they watch how it is actually done, though, then they pick it up right away.

Well, these restaurants and manufacturers of food ingredients will have to work harder to battle the other side of issue which is to be healthy by eating healthy. People are now seeing the benefits of eating less and this is not good for those in the food business. That is why they need to keep people interested in food. Manufacturers of food ingredients also sponsor shows like this in order to sell their products.

Yes thats right. We had a documentary on TV last night that was talking exactly about this. How greedy the food company have become over the years and how they want to push their products on us by "pretending" some of those foods are healthy but not all of them are!! Lets hope that more people will start to cook and buy local foods and eat healthier!! Thanks for sharing!

I don't watch cooking shows but do watch some cooking videos on youtube. It just looks so yummy that I find watching them once in a while . I have tried some but trust me you wouldn't wanna taste them . Anyway the cooking around here is pretty much handled by my mom. She's a really good cook and loves cooking too. Well home made food and take outs are like 50-50 for me

I have watched some cooking on youtube also when I needed to see a specific technique. It has helped me a lot. You need to learn from your mom's then. Thanks for sharing!

I suspect these types of shows are relatively cheap to make. No one has to do anything that doesn't come naturally to them! Lol! I love cooking my own food. At least I know what is in it! I also can't afford all those expensive pre-packaged meals, or eating out for that matter. I still think home-cooked is best and, fortunately, I have inherited my Mum's ability in that department!

You're right Mandolingirl, when we cook our own food, we know exactly whats in it. I like it that way too and like you, I think I have good genes for cooking . I cant afford prepared food or eating at the restaurants. I make my own pizza and its even better than the restaurant. Its also easy to make. I prepare my crust in advance and freeze it, then all I have to do is add the toppings and VOILA! Thank you both for sharing!

I can't afford to buy a lot of prepared foods either. I do keep bags of buffalo wings on hand because I love them, but I don't buy a lot of prepared foods. I keep some frozen pizzas around for a quick meal. I just can't afford to go with convenience foods all the time.

Now I do find that strange. I imagined people were sitting home watching TV and taking notes. We have lots of those shows on TV too. Some are competitions, some have the well known chef as the star, some are segments within a lifestyle show. I cook at home for myself and I usually cook from scratch. Although last night I stepped sideways...I usually have stir-fries and I'm getting a bit tired of the same old things all the time...they are starting to taste the same. I purchased a jar of Lite honey, mustard chicken sauce the other day (it was on special) and cooked it up last night. It was too easy, cook the chicken, add the sauce which had lots of carrots, cook the rice and et voila! it's done. However it was really bland and I didn't enjoy it. I'll stick to making my meals from scratch thanks...all the time avoiding the cooking shows. I don't like watching them as they make me hungry.

I believe the cooking shows are out to sort of help with better healthier eating. Kind of a competition with fast food and take out. I don't watch them too often but we do eat in quite a bit as it gets too expensive to eat out too often. Being that it is only my boyfriend and I at home we don't require too much, kind of glad too because even the grocery bill is a bit too high these days.

Grocery bills are way too high right now but its cheaper than eating out for us. We're only 2 also and I cook all the time in large batches and freeze it. Some is for us and some for my dad. My dad cant have sugar in his diet and hubby cant have salt. So I do a lot of cooking. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, i watch cooking shows in times when it seems that the recipe is a delicious one and easy to cook. But i prefer cooked foods at home rather than buy prepared foods. Those shows have prepared food, because they have to show the cooked outcome in the end. They cannot cook practically on the set because it will take a long process and they only have a fixed short time. All they wanted to show is the methodology of the cooking.

Thats right and its exactly what we need to learn, the "how to" of a recipe. I know they cant make it all in real time. Some of the recipes take hours to make. Thanks for sharing!

I just love cooking shows!! It's the type of shows that I most watch I think. Actually, I was even thinking in go to a cook school and try a career as a chef, but my parents didn't let me. I can say for myself that I do a lot of the recipes that I learn on the cook shows, especially Gordon Ramsay's shows. I try to cook almost every day, but sometimes that's impossible, so, most of the times I cook a lot of meals and put in the freezer for the week. I think that nowadays have so many cooking shows because everyone is tired of eating prepared meals that, most of the times, tastes bad and are unhealthy.

Im sorry you couldnt go to cooking school. I hope you'll be able to become a Chef if this is what you really want to do. My sister was a Chef for a while and she loved it until she hurt herself. Now she's working for a great company in Research & Development coming up with new recipes. She just invented a recipe with no gluten in it, it should be on the market very soon. So you see, you can make a career as a Chef or in another area connected to food. I too will cook large batches and freeze it for later on. Its such fun to be able to just drop it in the oven and have a good tasting meal. Thanks for sharing and I can only hope that one day you'll be able to follow your dream.

May be it will sound a little weird but I cannot cook at all even though I love cooking shows. The chefs there make the cooking look so easy and everything happens in minutes. They cook dishes in such an amazing way that you can even smell the food from the TV. Unfortunately when I try something at home it turns to a small disaster :(. May be I lack experience but it's not working with me.

Im sorry it doesnt turn out good for you when you cook. You're right, maybe you need to start with something easy so you can get confident and then work our way up to a more complicated dish. I tend to follow the recipes when its the first time I cook something, then I adjust it to my liking Dont give up. I too was very VERY bad when I started.....now it seems I havent killed anyone and they all ask for seconds Thanks for sharing!

I cook at home. I have some prepared foods but not a lot. I like to cook. I learn how to make some tasty meals by watching cooking shows. I think most people like cooking. I don't know anyone who only buys prepared foods.

I can give you a long list of people who never cook and always buy prepared foods unfortunately. My husband works at a butcher store since he retired and you wouldnt believe how much prepared food they sell!!! They are 18 employees in that little store and they are always rushing!! Thats why I cant understand why we have so many cooking shows here on tv when so many buy those prepared foods. Its the same when I go to the grocery store, all I see in other people's baskets are prepared foods and nearly no fresh veggies. I feel sorry for those people but I guess they are working and dont have the time to cook. Thanks for sharing!!
