Almonds for Weight Loss?

Singapore

I was recently watching The Last 10 Pounds in TV and I noticed that the nutritionist often advocate almonds for snacks. Almonds are often included in the weight loss diet. Why is this so? Will it really work to reduce weight? If it does, how much should I take each day?

I heard about this! Almonds are protein and very high in fiber. This means that you fill up easily with just a handful of them. When it comes to food and diet though, you have to be careful. You can eat as much healthy food as you want but eating too much of it can still ruin your weight loss goals. Either way, almonds are one of the healthiest foods so go for it!

Some people actually suggest to replace carbohydrates such as pasta, rice and bread with almonds, but I can't seem to be doing that just yet. I'm just snacking on it. I like to snack (though I seriously need to cut down!). The most important thing is to find healthy snacks around the house. I'm stocking on seaweed, and now almonds. It's healthier than chips. Thanks for the reminder not to eat too much, because they do contain a wee bit of saturated fat.

hi sydneyHazelton they are a healthy fat and have fiber and antioxidants too; also they are filling and stop hunger pangs so you stay on your diet or better still your lifestyle changes. a handful is what I have been told to eat and it will help; lose weight along with exercise.

Hi Hatley, yes, I like to eat snacks which can stop my hunger pangs. Some people mentioned that peanut butter does that too, but I'd grow fat snacking on peanut butter. So almonds is a better alternative in terms of filling me up. Yeah, I need exercise too, which I have not be consistent with.

I think it is a handful. They do work. I have no idea why, but this article might explain it . http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20031107/almonds-may-help-in-weight-loss I am interested in reducing my waist. It could also be that you are less hungry and you really have to chew them I do not know if almond milk would help as well. I do wonder why no one else answered this, since this is very important to know.

You can get almond milk that contains no sugar. I do eat almonds. Sorry but I did not explain the reason why in great detail. It was just that I have trouble with phelgm from regular milk and decided to try the almond milk to see if that would get rid of the phelgm. So far, it is working. I did see other websites, and there a blog, but I wanted to put down one that was sort of official. I will see if I can get a few others. I did get a couple, and I think that the last one explained it more. I do not know about the amount, not good at math and I seem to think in how many a day rather then the calorie level. I do think that it is not because they use the almonds to replace the food that makes them fat, as if "I have to eat so many almonds a day and forgo that lovely O'Henry Bar," (someone else not me - I do not like O'Henry bars," but they eat the almonds and for some reason they are not hungry for the other stuff. . http://www.naturalnews.com/025427_almonds_nuts_health.html http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/363819/eating_almonds_can_lead_to_weight_loss.html

@suspenseful - I see, I see! I often get phlegm when I have flu/cough. I didn't realize that almond milk can help to reduce it. I would definitely try it if I need to. If almonds help to contain the hunger, then I'm all for it. Sometimes, I have this urge to snack. I have to look for something that is not sweet or unhealthy. So a handful of almonds would be perfect. @CTHanum - If your country has those stores which sells soya milk, they often sell the almond soya milk. It's the same concept, just change the soya milk to normal milk. It's really nice!

Thanks for the link! I'm gathering information about almonds in helping weight loss. But the information in webmd was very technical since it is based on a study. I think the act of chewing helps to reduce the hunger pangs, I really do not know. But I would not recommend the almond milk, it might contain more sugar than nutrients. I'd rather you have the raw almonds. No one else answered this may be because they are not into losing weight???

I've also heard of that myself, that it'll help you lose weight, but I think a full cup would be too much. I've been told 1/4 of a cup per day (or a small handful per day is sufficient. I am in the process of trying to lose weight and will be purchasing them on Tuesday when my cheque get deposited in the bank.

I was watching the last 10 pounds again this morning on Youtube. I mainly focused on their nutritional plan. I noticed that almond is in most snacks, together with fruits. The amount of almonds to be eaten does seem to depend on the person's weight. For those with smaller build, 15 almonds was recommended, while those with larger built had to eat about 20 almonds. That would give you and me a good gauge. Great to hear that you are getting some money. I'm also looking for almonds at the store. They can be pretty expensive. So I'm looking for one which is value for money.

You are right! Sometimes my hubby buys mini chocolate bars or candy-coated chocolates, and just because they are available in the house, I tend to grab them for snacking. It's bad. So now I will look into my healthy snack cupboard instead.

Ya, they can be quite expensive, I probably won't be able to get the full recommended amount per day, but at least it's something to snack on temporarily if I'm super-hungry or something. Better than a chocolate bar.

nuts - cashew and almonds
Hi Sydney! I can't say it is good nor bad because it depends on how much you eat it. I believe in moderation intake of any food. Eating too much of any foods will cause harm too. Same goes to almonds. I believe that not just almonds but every nuts are good for us, and a good source of healthy fats-still a fat, BUT they do contain a lot of calories. Just like fruit juices. If we drink fresh fruit juice than probably it will help us in our diet but adding it with sugar will bring the opposite effect. From many sites they said it is advised to take one ounce-about one handful daily and it consist 160 calories per ounce. If you ask me I would choose to eat cashew, almonds and pistachio! They are my favorites. I love to eat them but I avoid the salted variety as they have a high sodium content.

I totally agree that you have to eat in moderation. I'm exploring snack options. I often have hunger pangs between meals. It never used to be this way. I used to have three square meals, and I was fine. But now, I need to snack. Looking at the options, I would definitely prefer a snack which is healthy and can contain my hunger to last until my next meal. The great thing about almonds is that it can be baked instead of fried, like cashew. For pistachios, it is often salted. Though I would love the honey coated almonds, I have restrained myself from buying it because of the sugar content. I'm just taking plain baked almonds now.

They are very healthy and good to lose weight, but only in moderation. About a handful a day, or maybe two handfuls max is good. But be careful not to eat too many, because they are high in fat and even good fat can turn bad if you eat a lot of it!

Thank you for reminding me to eat food in moderation. Eating too much of one kind of food is not going to help and it will result in imbalance. I guess a handful or two of almonds will be good each day. I'm trying to cultivate that habit.

Hi SydneyHazelton, I've been eating three almonds a day for more than forty years but not for weight loss, but rather as a preventive for Cancer. I know that this would not be enough for weight loss as I gained weight and had to cut back on the amount of other food that I was eating. I've found that it isn't as difficult as we think to lose weight and have loss 37 pounds in the past three months and am within 10 pounds of my right weight. I eat just one slice of bread each day, (multi-grain),no more than one potato, no Fry's and little fried foods. The key though is to eat smaller portions. As for the almonds, I've never heard that they were good for weight loss but my suggestion would be no more than a half cup each day. Blessings.

No kidding? 40 years? I didn't know that it has anti-cancer properties. I think I'm beginning to like what I hear about the health benefits from eating almonds. I know that the key to weight loss is smaller portions. I'm trying to do just that. Just one slice of bread in the morning, instead of two. Boiled egg instead of fried egg. I have made some changes to my lifestyle and I think that it is important that these changes are done gradually. I think half a cup of almonds sounds good enough. They can be rather expensive in this side of town.

That's the thing I'm trying to find out, whether almonds would help people with weigh problems. And if it does, how? I really wonder if it will help to lose belly fat or keep you full until the next meal. Still doing some research on this.

Almonds are very high in fat. Although they contain many of the natural fats that are considered healthy it isn't something to be eating if you just want to lose weight. If you want to lose weight I suggest a high protein, low carb, low fat diet. Lean meat - fish and chicken - and veggies, with a few almond nuts. Perfect meal, in my opinion. And you will lose weight. But don't JUST eat almonds, please. :)
