Where zombies go for fun...

I was minding my own business the other day when someone I follow on Twitter posted something. Well, the link he supplied was a dud, but I had to find out more. I, like lots of people in the U.S., have been to theme parks. I've been to Disneyland (back in the early 1960's.) I've been many times to Six Flags Over Texas. I'd been to Astroworld, a theme park connected to the Astrodome in Houston. I've been to Dollywood. So, I've seen a few of these things. Granted, its been a long while since I went to Dollywood, but at least that was in the last couple of decades... BUT... I didn't know about this one (granted I'm not up on theme parks or anything) but this tweet got my attention. http://www.lovethesepics.com/2011/05/creepy-crusty-crumbling-illegal-tour-of-abandoned-six-flags-new-orleans-75-pics/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bcja8UBtXdk I can't walk, so going to it is out of the question, but did you even know about this place? Did you ever go there when it was open? How about more recently?

The only six flags I've ever been to is the local one... but only a few times because I actually don't like Six Flags much. I'm not much for amusement parks of any kind. Those pictures are really creepy though, especially the video. I'm not surprised that the park got abandoned, but I am surprised that it was allowed to sit and decay for so long. The end of the video says that it was eventually demolished, but I wonder why it took so long for anyone to do anything about it.

Its my understanding that it is still there... but who really knows without going I'm not much on them either, I don't like roller coasters... and, as I said, I can't walk

There's a note at the end of the video that says it will be demolished and sold for scrap metal in January 2011. Did they never end up doing that?

I have been to a Six Flag's a long time ago. I think it was in Kentucky. I never knew New Orleans had one. The pictures are so creepy and sad! It is a shame there was so much waste and destruction.

Wow!! It is so Sad that this attraction was destroyed like this from Hurricane Katrina. It is often little things like this that no one ever really knows about until someone like you posts here. Makes you wonder why the rides that are still in working condition have not all been moved or tried to be repaired somewhere and put somewhere in use. Makes you wonder if they can ever get New Orleans to look not so run down?

Really, I kind of doubt that New Orleans is ever going to regain what all it lost with the hurricane - I have met a number of people who say they will never live there again - we got quite a few of them here in Austin after all. Even the hurricane that devastated Galveston, I've met quite a few who won't return there either!

Luna Park - Luna Park in Sydney near the Harbour Bridge was first opened 4-10-1935. It has had a colourful history and is still popular today.
I went to Luna Park as a child and took my girls when they were little but I haven't been to any of the more modern theme parks. They are so wickedly expensive. I enjoyed the photos but not the destruction and the graffiti. Looking at those carousels with all the ornate carving and scroll work and artwork...what a crying shame that these have not been salvaged. Have I missed something? Have you injured yourself? Why can't you walk?

I agree, there is a lot of lovely stuff that is sitting there being ruined. I fractured my heels years ago and have never really been able to walk much without pain, I can walk, but not far without pain.

I am not amused by theme parks, so I don't go to them, although I did go one day to Disneyland in 1977.

I'm not much into theme parks myself, but anything abandoned and falling down has my attention - don't ask me why... always been that way...

I have been to Six Flags in IL hundreds of times, also a couple times to the one in St. Louis and once in California. Oh then of course Disneyland. I have never been to this one, eek it was kind of scary but in an adventurous way. If I had the chance I would go as I still love theme parks. In fact we just booked our little ones flight today coming from England to us here in IL and one of our first outings will be Six Flags. lol I of course am the one up on all scary rides as my boyfriend does not usually get on much of them. She is glad I am her American Mum as she calls me as I and she do a lot of fun things while Daddy, sits and watch most of the times. lol

yeah, it kind of calls to ya, like "don't you want to come explore?" I've just never really liked those theme parks, because I don't like the scary rides, life is scary enough without them!

I must admit that while on the rides I am wishing I never got on, but then when safely getting off I can honestly say I had a blast. lol I guess the thrill part of it all is what allows me to enjoy it. Sort of like like where we have ups and downs only on the rides, it is for a short time. lol

Wow. I have never thought of an abandoned amusement park before. I guess I kind of assumed that people would take it down if they weren't using it, but I had never really considered how a situation like this would impact an attraction. It certainly would be creepy, but it would be fun to see it. I have never been to any Six Flags before at all. I wonder if and when they will ever do anything with that land.

I know that hadn't ever thought of a totally abandoned park. I knew that some parts of other parks have been abandoned and then reworked later, but this one... I don't know that they will do any with it, sounds like it may well sink back into the swamp and not in the too distant future.

I have been to a Six Flag but that was like forever ago! I have been to the one near Gurnes,Illinios. I even was there over 30 years ago when it was Marriotis Great America! Anyway I looked at the photos of the adandoned one by New Orleans. I don't remember hearing about it. The photo's are creepy and disturbing. They say Six Flags was buildt on a swamp. Well if it wasn't buildt on a swamp and so many other things,New Orleans would have alot of their wetlands around! When the wetlands didappeared so did the defense against Hurricanes! Sure they would get hit but not as bad! This is why Hurricane Katrina was so bad! So much water was around, then should of been,no wonder the levels broke! A nice picture of how man screwed up! Again!

Oh, I agree, the whole building of New Orleans where they did was just not the smartest thing they ever did... I mean, like Venice, at the time it made sense, but now...
