Last year at this time my daughter, then 13, went on a mission trip with our church about 3 or 4 hours away for 5 days. This year, now being 14,she was to go on a mission trip with them about 8 or 9 hours away for 5 days also. As they have said before that there was a said amount to be paid. But,if we and another single parent family(we are both windows with low incomes)cannot afford the amount, they attend on a scholarship. This year we were asked to do some fundraisers, which my daughter did and to collect. My daughter and the other teenager collected. Then all of the sudden we were told that we had to have more money, which the church knew was not possible for us to do.I said to one of the youth pastors,"Are we now teaching the children that you have to have money to serve God?".And he said no and that he was sorry that I had that concern. Then, the other teenager was told he was being out of line when he tried to assist with something at the church and told that he could not go.his spot was filled by another teen that could afford to pay the amount. My daughter was asked quite a few times,"Did she think she was really ready to attend the trip?".Well, why not? She went last year. She decided not to go on the mission because she would not feel comfortable with the other teens that do not talk with her much. Do you think that is appropiate for a church to expect low in come families to pay to go and work? What do you think?

My daughter is going on her first missions trip this summer. There are 15 people going on this trip to a native reserve a few hours north of us. They were told it would cost about $70 per person. One of the teens wrote up a statement that was read at all the masses a couple of weekends ago informing the congregation of the missions trip and that $800 was needed for this trip. Donations and prayers were asked for but prayers were stressed more than the money. My daughter read that statement at one of the masses and people were looking for her after mass to give her money. (She had also been altar serving at that mass and was helping put out candles and such and forgot that she should be at the back of the church to "answer any questions"). By the end of the weekend, after 4 masses, they had raised well over $1,000 by parishioner donations. I think members of the parish are more inclined to donate money when they know exactly where it is going and especially when it is a teenager up on the pulpit making the announcement and "plea". The Lifeteen group is going on this mission and it was members of Lifeteen who read the statement at each of the masses. An adult making these types of pleas, I believe, would not get the same response. When my older daughter was going on a trip to Puerto Rico to participate in the Junior Pan American games, I emailed all the church members I had on my email list. I am the leader of the Lector Ministry so I have a lot of names on my list. I was selling angel ornaments and not only did I get a lot of responses for purchases, I received cash donations as well. This was not a church event but we are part of a wonderful church community. Most of us are actively involved in the church so we are well known and, I guess, liked. For the Puerto Rico trip my daughter also went door to door in her Taekwondo uniform asking people to help pay for her trip. She raised all the money she needed; we didn't have to pay anything. When we were told to ask people to donate money for the Missions trip we were told just a two dollars here and there. People were donating $20 or more! Good is good.

At our church they had all the kids come up on the stage during one of the services and the pastor just told that these kids were going on a mission trip. There was not special collection coming up for that. They did have a couple fundraisers where the congregation has the opportunity to contribute if they are there then. And it was $320 per child, only 10 slots were available and they were not staying in a hotel. And we had to send spending money for them to eat on the way down and on the way back. And during the other 3 days they were going to eat with the homeless that they were serving. So,I don't understand why it costs so much. I am glad that your daughter got to go on her trips and participate.

How certain are you that your daughter would be safe? Christian Churches generally have a tarnished record in this regard. I wouldn't allow my daughter out of my sight at Church, let alone on a 5 day trip! Sounds like your Church is money hungry! Would you trust this Church with the welfare of your daughter?

I have heard about some of those problems, mostly with catholic churches, but not "generally having a tarnished record in this regard".

I actually think that God would not even care if they went on missions or not and I certainly don't think he'd care if they had money or not.

Good morning, doesn't seem fair to me. Children should not be singled out like that. They can't help their families don't have the money to send them. The church should make allowances for kids like that. I hope her & the boy get to go.

They say that they don't single them out,but it seemed obvious to me and some other people that they were because all of the sudden they were asking my daughter if she really thought that she was ready to do this, when she already had last year. And also accused this boy of acting up when all he was simply doing was trying to help someone with something that he was knowledgeable about. So,he was told that he could not go.They said that my daughter could go however she no longer wanted to because she would be stuck for 5 days with no "real" friends. The other children that went are not really friends of hers, just mere aquaintances that she does not associate with much....they are wealthier kids. They have already left and my daughter and her friend are spending time together.
