hand me downs

I personally don't have a problem with hand-me-down clothes if they are in good condition. I heard an associate of mine say the other day, "I'm not wearing those...they've already been worn". Now, these clothes were like really nice stuff. Marc Jacobs and some other big names from like Macy's and such. I found myself thinking, too bad they were not in my size, lol. But hey, that's just one woman's opinion. I mean, I practically raised my kids on passing down their clothing. When you have a large family, this is simply a part of recycling in my thoughts. Do you wear passed down clothes? Why or why not?

I am the eldest of 5 siblings , all females. As the eldest, i get to have the new clothes, though our parents always buy us identical clothes. But, it will always be that if i have outgrown my clothes , my younger sisters will get them. Actually, i don't mind wearing hand me downs. As long as it fits me well and is nice , i will take it.

I completely agree with you SIMPLYD. I am the oldest also, so I always get the new stuff and first, but I loved clothes so much and still do that it didn't matter if they were hand me down or not. I would still wear them if they were nice and in good condition.

SIMPLYD, isn't that the best part of it all really? Even if I pay a buck or two, I still consider it a treasure well worth the investment.

Besides, those hand me downs though used by others, will certainly be a new look to us when we wear it. Hence, it will be new to the eyes of others. new look, at no cost at all.

there is no problem of hand me down clothes. I grew up with a hand me down clothes. And i also give unused clothes to those who are much in need. So for me no problem as long as they can be used.

igatiful_badass...yes, that is good that you give away clothes as well. I think that more of us should find ways to recycle and help each other out. I mean, I take inventory of my closet every so often and give things to the local sharing centers and such.

It is true what they say, when you give more shall be given to you. It's like you're a magnet to good things when you are good to others. Wouldn't you agree. I love to give as well. Not clothes so much because of the size of my family, but I love to give other things like my time and baking bread for the neighbors.

It's all about the quality though isn't it. I mean who wants a hand me down thats run down, lol? No one I would assume. That would completely take the fun out of getting the clothes. Nobody wants anyone else's junk.

Once in awhile I go to the used stores, but the only reason I don't shop there a lot is because they don't have things I like in my size. Some of the things look pretty worn as well, and I wouldn't wear them. Friends have given me clothes and I do wear the ones I like. I have no problem with it at all. I think it's great you raised your kids with hand me downs, because it teaches them not to be so fussy when they are older. Plus they will be kind to those who are in hand me downs. That is a great thing!

rosegardens...I mainly raised them that way because it was more affordable. However, you bring up a good point. I do believe it has taught them a way of being frugal and how to preserve. I know it sure has taught me that. I mean I didn't have to wear second hand or hand me downed clothes really as I am the oldest of only two kids, but I wore them if they were popular, cute, in good shape, or free.

I do not know what you meant by hand me down clothes. I do not know if hand me downs cloth is the same thing as second hand cloth. In Nigeria, we have a market in which second hand cloth is sold. These cloth is cheaper than the ready made cloth. Many people who can not afford brand new cloth or ready made cloth go for second hand cloth.

Yes, naija4real...that is second hand if a way. Hand me downs are clothes worn by someone else and handed down to another person. Usually a younger sibling. But in this case, we can call second hand or hand me down the same.

Wearing hand me downs, or wearing used clothing, is a good financial decision. The higher end brands are usually my preference, because they tend to last longer. Why pay three times the amount for new clothing, when you can still get good quality clothing for a third of the price? Kids especially can benefit from good used clothing, because they grow out of clothes so quickly. I also wear some used clothing and purses that are in good condition, mainly because of the amount of money I save. I love to shop and saving money on items like used clothing, just allows me to shop more!

I definitely approve this message. I love to shop also. I love finding bargains too. Since I am a variety girl, I truly like having more options. This method certainly gives that.

i know people that will not shop at thrift stores because well, they have been already worn and as for hand me downs, it is the same deal. my kids were practically raised on hand me downs too. thank God for them! now we have a couple of friends who buy really expensive stuff (designer) and give us their hand me downs and since my daughters are older, most of the stuff fits them! love that!!

I had a problem as a kid with it but now I like it. I am wearing a t-shirt right now I got at a yard sale for 50 cents 2 years ago. It is still like new.

Soapies1973, I think all kids have a problem with it. Mine do. But its no matter. When they start working and can fund their own lives, I've done my job and I won't give a flyin flip what they buy or where, lol. When they get to be my age with their own kids then they'll understand, Momma had to do what she had to...I hope they get it just as thick I have had it, lol. Good job on the bargain also. Wish I would have found it first. I love haggling prices as well.
