How to attract more followers to your twitter ?

I am new to this twitter and really pleased to see this platform. I think the world seems smaller in this social media.I noticed many twitter users having lots of followers while others don't.I plan to use twitter as social media promotion to my website but should be a effective trick to attract more followers. I am trying to following others and send them message but seems this is not effective way. How about you? do you have any trick to attract more followers to your twitter account?
