Would You Have Eaten It?

This happened a few years ago but I just thought of it again. When I first met my husband's family they absolutely hated me. Let me tell you why and you tell me what you would have done if it was you. They lived in trailers and they had roaches really really bad. Now, when I went there that was the first time in my life that I had ever seen a cockroach. It was too cold where I was born and raised for them so I never saw one. So anyway, the roaches were crawling in the food on the table. I took my husband to another room and asked him take me to a fast food place so I could stomach some food. They still don't like me because of it, they think I am rude now. I didn't mean to be rude, I was about to throw up! I could not eat that food that had bugs all over it. Just couldn't do it. So, would you have eaten the food with bugs crawling in it? Would you have gotten something else to eat too? What would you have done if in my situation?

I would definitely not have been able to eat that food if it had cockroaches in it! Its not fair of the family to be upset with you about it - I think that seeing as you were a guest they should have made the effort to at least make sure that the food they were providing was clean and hygienic! Its not healthy to eat food that has been contaminated like that!

I don't think it's fair the way they treated you either. When your husband gets home, I think he needs to say something to them about it - such as 'if you continue to treat my wife this way, we won't be spending any time with you in the future'. It's important to have it come from HIM, because they might take it seriously and perhaps apologize, unless they don't care if they never see him again. As your husband, it's his responsibility to expect (and make sure) that his family gives you the respect you deserve because you're his wife. I think they are rude for their behavior.

I know I don't think it was fair at all the way they treated me because of it! . They told the whole family that I was rude and I thought I was better than them because of it. I never said that!

Ewww, no way would I have eaten that food, that is totally disgusting.. These bugs as well as flies carry all kinds of diseases, (I say flies because they probably don't mind that either) and one can get sick from eating food that has been contaminated..This is also why I rarely eat out, I can't be 100% sure the restaurant wouldn't be as careful as I am when it comes to preparing food..

Okay good I'm glad that I am not the only one! I just could not do it and I kind of felt bad but I just couldn't handle that. I would have thrown up all over the place and I think that would have been more rude than what I did.

I also want to say I am not saying this in a proud manner, because most of my life, my finances have not been good and we have been in dire situations many times, sometimes going without electricity or water because we couldn't afford to pay the bill. But when it came to what we ate, I'd never eat something that a bug has crawled on.. One time someone made a comment about a fly that has landed on some food and they ate it. They just said, "That's okay, he didn't eat much." My thought was, it isn't what the fly ate, but what the fly left behind that concerns me..I never saw the movie, "The Fly" but my husband has and trust me, you don't want to eat after a fly...

I grew up in the ghetto and there and roaches were a fact of life. Each family did what they could to control the vermin and luckily, my mom was very adept at controlling those in my household. People whose roach problem was out of control usually were not very hygienic in the first place and so, we avoided people like that homes. I would not have eaten there nor would i have stayed there very long since the roaches would have found their way into my bags or in my clothing. Best thing you did was get out of there.

That was real infestation. Yes gross. Even poor folk find ways to control roaches and those that are content to live with them can live with them by themselves. lol

Yeah at least try to get rid of them! His sister would step on them to kill them in her bare feet, EW! I just could not do that, I couldn't. Unfortunately I was states away from my house or I would have left really quick! Yeah we had to clean out our things after because of course some of them did get in our stuff. Ugh, it was gross. They were in the food, the shower and crawled on you in your sleep!

I use to live in a construction site where there were so many cockroaches in the kitchen but there was no option other that kitchen. I ate the food few days and then I brought a insecticide which was poisonous to use but I had to take the risk. It was really a difficult situation for me. I hate cockroaches.

That is exactly what I would have done. In fact, the very first day I noticed an infestation I would have brought insecticide to work the next day. I'm amazed you are the only one who thought of it. EWE!!

I'm sorry, that is tough. I hate cockroaches too! They are so super nasty. I don't blame you for bringing insecticide with you, I would have too.

No i wouldn't have eaten food with bugs crawling in it. I have eaten things that tasted really bad just to make the other person not feel bad but this, I seriously wouldn't have even considered. I would have gotten something else to eat or just starve. And I don't think you were rude for resenting food with bugs in it.

Okay good, I am not the only one! Yeah if it was something that just tasted bad I would have dealt with it but that I just could not handle! Okay I'm not the only one that doesn't think I was being rude. I think throwing up when trying to eat it would have been rude!

Let me first say that I suffer from acute & fatal cockrophobia…before you raise your brows to ‘what’s that’…well, I really don’t know if there is such a term but I’ve coined it for myself and millions of my kindred who live in mortal fear of the roach!!! I guess this answers your query as to whether I would have eaten that food or not (eewwww), IF I’d not freaked out by their very sight!!! However, if I did survive the sudden fluctuation in my heartbeat then being the typically demure Indian girl, I’d have acted coy and just pretended that I wasn’t hungry (actually, I’d be too busy looking for the first escape route…roaches fly too, you know, its not that they always crawl…though I wish they could do only that)

Hahahahaha! I suffer from it too then!! I hate them and I am terrified of them. And the ones they had there actually bit! I was sitting on the toilet and one seriously bit my butt, I am not kidding. It hurt for a second! The ones they had in their house thank God never flew or at least I never saw them do it. I would have flipped out more if they did! Yeah I did it in the best most nice way I could by pulling my husband to the side and asking him to take me somewhere else to eat. We told them I wasn't hungry and we were going to the store. Apparently they didn't buy our story...

hi lovingMyBabies I would have been a little ruder. I would have suggest ed that a couple of bug bombs placed in kitchen and living room And set off would have eliminated those critters as look they do spread all sorts of diseases. then I wpuld have done what you did, got my hubby to take me to a decent clean restaurant. I would never eat food with roachs crawling in it and they should not have either, Yuck.

Yeah I thought I did it in the nicest way possible and they still got offended! Oh well, I couldn't think of any other nice way to do it. Plus like you said most people would have been a lot worse than I was. Their lucky I was so polite about it! It was nasty. We slept there one night and I had to leave. Roaches were in the food, in the shower and they would crawl on us at night while sleeping!

Oh my.. IT IS part of hygiene right? and sanitary stuff!! Cockroaches are dirty insects... and well, them living there should be able to clean the place..or they get sick! Maybe if you are there just pretend that you are full..and better eat before going there..because it is just not right.. and if you have kids, also do not let them eat they might get sick Reason out to your husband these practical stuff.. he will understand.

yes so true but why would they let it remain that way? don't they get sick or something?
• Valdosta, Georgia

Absolutely it is hygiene and about sanitary. They are very dirty and nasty. I will never go there again. Thank God I haven't been there for a while and I will never return there. I just can't. My kids will never go there either because I don't want them thinking it is normal and I don't want them being sick all the time...

I think it's not because of you offending them. It is just that the reason is so clear, sanitary and health concerns. Of course you do have the rights to refrain what food to eat and what is not. If I were in your shoes too, I would do the same and just signal my hubby to eat out but not to shout it out loud that will offend them. Just a simple exit act and there you go. It will be too much if they just hate you for not eating such dirty food, its a shame for them also to offer such food that cockroaches are already feasting .

Exactly, it's nasty! I was not raised around these kinds of things either. I was raised in a very clean home. Not spotless with 4 kids in the house but nothing like that! Ew. No I didn't shout it out or anything I just told them nicely I wasn't very hungry and told my husband in another room that I needed to eat somewhere else...When I told them I wasn't hungry they got ticked off and started rumors about me to everyone!

No....Never.... !! I would never be eating those disgusting never ever in my life. Its the primary right of a person to eat clean and good foods.I think every one in mylot will be having the same view. But the realistic fact is that thousands and thousands of people every where in the world are forced to eat those dirty foods since there is no other food for them and still many are starving.....

No, I would not have eaten it. I'm absolutely amazed that people would sit at a table with roaches eating the food, most especially when there is a guest. This sounds like a movie scene. lol. I know sometimes people just can't help the circumstances because of where they live--if the neighbor has them, you will too. But, you can also control them with poison. It is not expensive to buy some Black Flag or Roach Pruf. Heck, if it came down to it, I would ask some friends to buy some for me if I couldn't afford it.

They may have been embarrassed but chose not to show it by seemingly ignoring the problem. I had roaches in my first apartment, but they were manageable. Didn't see them until I started cleaning the place after I paid for it, and the rent was so cheap I just got some bug bombs and black flag roach killer. I saw some the first month I was there, for some reason they wanted to be social and when I went to get my coffee, one, just one, would be going toward my cereal bowl on the table. EWE!!! For a few weeks that happened. Just one would come and try to eat with me. I would kill it, so I knew it wasn't the same one. Sprayed some more BF and then there were no more, not ever after that. With such a heavy infestation as they have, it can take months to see results. They will have to switch poisons every time because the roach can develop an immunity to them. I heard great things about Roach Pruf, I think it was Andy Rooney that recommended it. Maybe you can have your hubby give them a can.

I absolutely agree with you. Honestly rosegardens they did not even act like they saw them. Like, they were so used to them that they just thought everyone else was I guess. I don't know. I would be so embarrassed that I would not let anyone come over until they were gone, thats me. But they didn't seem to even know they were there... They did buy spray and things but they were so infested at that point honestly they were just hatching more and more every day. So gross! I would have moved and moved quick if it was me. They were there before they moved in so if I saw cockroaches I would be like nope not living here.

I also had refused to eat that food, after seeing cockroaches crawling on it. These insects transport viruses, after contact with feces from the sewers where they nest. Cockroaches can cause various diseases, apart from being disgusting animals. The only thing you have done is to look after your health and you behaved in the right way.

I wouldn't have eaten it either. I would have told them I wasn't hungry, which would be true if I had seen roaches crawling all over the table and food. If they don't like you for that, then that is totally on them, not you.

Hahaha! We had just gotten done with a really long road trip there so my stomach was aching or I wouldn't have been hungry after I saw that either! LOL. We did tell them I wasn't hungry and my husband took me to eat elsewhere. Apparently they didn't buy our story at all. =(

I've lived and worked in Asia, where the climate was tropical. There were a lot of bugs in some areas, and I have lived in places where roaches were pretty commong. But! Even so, I took care of my food, and made sure no bugs touched it. There are a few things in life I could let go, but not bugs on my food! I think their (your in law's) failure was not seeing from your point of view. And how disgusting roaches are!
• Valdosta, Georgia
30 Jul 11
Exactly. There is a way to take care of the problem and not let them get into your food! I could not eat there. There was just no way I could get it down. No way. I think they should have thought about if they had never seen them before how they would have felt.

sorry to hear that, but i don't think you are rude. actually, they should felt sorry for you. don't they know that rouches are bugs and there is a thing called exterminator in the world, and don't they know you are a modern woman?ok, so maybe they didn't care much about you? the best way to do is to talk to your husband. cockrouches...eat...disgusting!!!

30 Jul 11
Thank you! It was really nasty. They don't care about anyone but themselves to be honest. That's not being mean, it is honest. If you knew them you would understand. Thank goodness he never wants to go there again anyway because they are not nice people to me or our children...

That is a real barf situation, but yes i would have done exactly the same thing. You werent being rude at all! You pulled your husband aside to talk instead of calling them out on the bugs right in front of them. To be honest, its bad on their part for not cleaning up the place before their son's wife went into their house.
