Have you ever been to Mount Vernon? Here is some details about this terrific peace of history. The Mount Vernon plantation is on the banks of the Potomac River in Alexandria,Virginia,16 miles south of Washington,DC.It was the home of the first president of the United States,George Washington. His wife Martha and their children also lived there.George Washington acquired the home in 1754 and lived there till his death in 1799. The plantation is open for tours of the house, grounds and outer buildings. As well they also hold special events and educational classes. Their is over a dozen outer buildings including the slaves quarters, kitchen ,stables and a greenhouse. There is the most interesting building! Washington's re-created 16 sided barn!Which is located on the farm part of the plantation that is over 4 acres, only a 5 minute walk south of the mansion. And on the tour people will see horses treading the wheat as was dong during the 1700 period. The farm section is open April through October with hands on activities,"Fall Harvesting Family Days" take place during the month of October. The wheat-treading demonstrations occur daily July 4- September 6 and September 10- October 24 on Friday's- Saturdays only. George Washington was one of the first farmers to abandon growing tobacco to grew wheat instead. Tours at the estate start at the " Ford Orientation Center" where you will see a short film in one of the two luxury theatres, showing the history of the life of President George Washington.Fifty of the acres on the plantation are open to the public where the Maryland shores can be seen from the house. Four acres of Mount Vernon is a working farm. The tomb where George and Martha rest in peace is on the grounds as well as a slave memorial and burial grounds. At the tomb of the first president and first lady there is a daily wreathlaying ceremony at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.The slave grounds are full of unmarked graves,it is unknown how many are there. There is a memorial marker at the front of the ground which is up the in hill in a wooded area. The "Slave Life at Mount Vernon" tour starts daily at 2:00 PM April - October. It starts at the Mansion Circle. President Washington died on December 14, 1799 in the master bedroom of the mansion. He was buried in the old burial vault which was replaced by a newer brick one, that was ordered by him in his will because of the deteriorating state of the vault. The tomb rebuilding was complete in 1831 and the bodies of George,Martha and other family member's. Among the acres are 4 gardens that have the same plants on it that were there during the 1700's. From careful archaeological excavating it was determined what kind of plants and trees were grown at Mount Vernon during the period of the 1700's.There were few but some vegetables grown there, but a lot of scrubs and trees.Fruit trees such as apple, pears, plums, peaches and cherries.Mr Washington experimented with seeds before he grew them in the ground. The "Garden and Landscape" tour is a walking one and only partially accessible for the handicapped. It is taken daily April through October at 11:00,stating at the Mansion's Circle.Of course the main attraction is touring the mansion to see where the Washington family, ate, slept and lived their daily lives.Mr Washington personally overseen the decorating procedures. Then the home was over seen for renovation's leaving the majority to the way it actually was during that era and as many personal that belonged to the family in the home also. The rate's are reasonable.I have been here once a long time ago and really liked it.I plan to return and take my daughter. Would you like to visit here? Have you already been here?

I've been there two times, i live not too far away and it's a great place to take visitors. We took the tour through the house the second time around. I thought it was fun to sit and listen to Martha tell stories while she was knitting, lol. She was very nice though and let the kids sit with her for pictures.

Great! I am not too far either.I am in Fairfax County, the same as Mount Vernon. My ancestors settled here from Ireland and there is so much history here. Most of this family loves history. My daughter doesn't thou.I joke with her and tell her she was switched at the hospital.
