Stray dogs around the world

I really want to move abroad, but I havnt decided on where to. I live in the UK at the moment and for many reasons have just had enough. One thing I am having problems with is finding favorable countries where there are not too many stray dogs. I feel that dogs are quite dangerous anyway, and I wouldnt want to go somewhere where there are many many stray and vicious dogs. And I know that the best way to find out is to go visiting the countries, but I dont have an endless supply of money, so I'm just trying to make a shortlist of maybe 3 or 4 countries to look into seriously. But what I'd like your help on, my fellow mylotters, is if you could tell me what country you're from and what the stray/dog owner situation is. If you've traveled a bit, I'd also appreciate if you'd give me any first hand information you know about other countries please.

i love that dog on your pic, my niece have one and its soooo cute!! GOing back to your question. The philippines is not for you since the stray dogs are not controlled there that much. Turkey doesnt have lots of stray dogs. They have only one breed of street dog but those are even rare to see. The government of turkey have efforts of collecting stray dogs and bringing them to the public animal care. I dont know if you would consider turkey, but Its really a wonderful place. If you want to learn more, I can help you learn more from Turkey. Canada is also a good place since the dogs are also monitored there and ownership includes the dogs identity and are microchipped. Of all the places I've been, I know one where I never saw a street dog. Riyadh is a place where you cant find one. Saudis dont really like dogs and there what you will see are street cats... Take your pick :D

Yeah those Samoyed dogs are really cute and cuddly arent they! Its possibly one of the only dogs I might consider letting my other half get! :) Thanks so much for your response. Very informative. I had hears about the Philippines and Thailand having problems with people getting 'cute' puppies and then discarding them when they become older and not-so cute. Its a shame that that happens. Here in the UK, and I know America is the same, people get so attached to their dogs that they still love their doggies when they look all old and frail. Many people even go to dog shelters and adopt dogs that have wild temperaments or even disabilities. I was a little worried when I first heard about Turkey having stray dogs, and I'm glad you're another person who has said that they tend to be quite rare. I like how the Turkish government are very active with controlling strays. Apparently they're all chipped, and they only remove the dogs if they are dangerous or diseased, which I think is very responsible of them. So far I think turkey is quite high up on my list. Canada is probably too cold for us, and Saudi is probably too warm. Its good to know that Saudi does not have the dog problem though! I dont mind cats, and they generally arent too keen on people unless they're being fed ;) Thanks very much for your response again! Have a nice day.

I have lived here in the US all my life and have not encountered any issues with stray dogs and or attack by pets of any kind. I would say the only concern here is one can afford to be here as the expenses here are quite high. The winter weather too can be very brutal but living here my whole life, you tend to somewhat get use to it. The winters can be 30 degrees below zero Fahrenheit at times and the summers can be 120 degrees hot and humid. When we get Spring and Fall it can be quite nice, but expenses is something that is quite high here.

VietNam might be a good place for you as they eat dogs so there wouldn't be many strays! Seriously though, New Zealand is the place I would love to live. A lovely country and lovely people and you can choose from the cool south to the warm north to suit your personal taste in climate. Steer clear of Africa because stray dogs are a pest there and rabies is common.

Hmm, we'd thought about NZ, but then I heard 1: "its just like the uk" - which is a huge no for us, we want to get away from it, not just another version of it, and 2: jobs being so difficult to come by there. I'd be quite scared to get there then find I'm trying for 15 years to afford to get out, like 2 couples I know. @ Vietnam! Actually, Top Gear got me quite interested in Nam! I dont think I'd like to eat a dog though! I always think they'd be quite chewy and stringy to eat. Wasnt thinking too much of Africa, although I would quite fancy visiting Mauritius or the Seychelles at some point. Mauritius seems to have quite a good few IT jobs too, which would be good for both me and the other half. They do have quite a dog problem though. Thanks for the response

As the first animal humans domesticated, dogs are pretty much all over... but most big cities in the U.S. have "leash laws" and don't have a lot of wandering dogs... but as you said, it can be hard to get into I would guess that many large cities are pretty good about keeping stray dogs off streets for safety reasons, so pick a place and go...

Just keep in mind that dogs can sense fear, so you should try to remain calm when faced with a strange dog. Also, if you are that afraid of dogs, you should invest in a dog whistle. They work most of the time and really come in handy when dealing with an unruly dog. Most dogs are friendly, so try to keep that in mind as well. However, stray dogs, especially in a pack can definitely be dangerous, so never walk in unfamiliar areas by yourself or without some sort of stick to defend yourself with. I love dogs and am unafraid of them, even though I have been bitten a few times in my life. Every time I was ever bitten, the animal was thinking he had to protect his master and that I was a threat. So, keep that in mind as well when near a dog's owner.

I've thought about getting one of those ultrasonic dog chasers. They seem quite humane and harmless. I completely understand how dogs think about fear and protecting their master etc, but there's just something I cant control. I usually just freeze if a dog is coming towards me and I just start to panic. I'm really good at controlling it these days, but still, I think dogs are pack animals, attack because its their nature, and have known many people whose dogs have suddenly snapped one day for no reason. I guess its out of respect of their temperament that I am the way I am. Anyway, I'd just rather be somewhere where I wasnt having to feel that I needed to watch my back all the time so thats why I ask really. Where are you from? Do you get many strays, and what are their temperament if you do? Thanks for your response.

I live in the U.S. I generally don't see too many strays or packs of dogs running wild. A few years ago, though, there was one pack of dogs running loose and killed a neighbors cat. That was pretty much the only time I have ever witnessed such a pack.

I don't think all the stray dogs are dangerous. Dogs all are lovely and close to people, stray dogs are really poor, they might be abandoned by their owners. They had a terrible living environment, it might caused them been timid and sensitive to dangers. What a pitty, they have a warm home before. You must be nervous when you saw a tray dog, and behave something unusual which make the stray dog feel afraid of you, and attacted you for a defend. So, release yourself and walking as if you weren't see the dogs, they won't hurt you.

I think you'd be safe pretty much anywhere in the US. We have stray dogs here, but def. not a lot, and they aren't vicious dogs that are just going to run up and attack anything that moves. If you consider US I think you should think about the weather you want to live in, and other things like that...not worry about strays dogs.

Yeah i know that in america, the dog situation is the same as here in the uk. The odd few strays you do come ecross are not usually strays, just escapees. I think the problem we would have with the US is just with getting a visa at all. These days its practically impossible unless you're VERY special. Thanks for your response. Have a great day :)

la_chique, To be honest, stray dogs are inevitable everywhere - especially during economic challenging times where people are financially strapped and loosing their homes, so domestic pets are the very likely eviction candidates. So, I would have to say that strays is a global problem and you cannot avoid them. I do not know about your experiences, but my experiences with strays have been pleasant where they were never aggressive. Most of them I meet are either hungry or sick, which are literally too weak to attack anyone. So, I would either feed them or call the Protection group to find them an alternative arrangement for their well being. Now, I think you may not be happy to hear this but the countries that you would not likely find strays are those that find dogs a delicacy. I remember being in a few of these countries which I will not name, where you could not find strays because most of them, would be caught and end up in some cooking pots. I apologize if you find this gross and unappetizing but it is still a fact. In conclusion, I do not know if you've been to Singapore before and I would advocate that you do make a trip. I wouldn't say that there are no stray dogs but at least, it is very much under control.

Thanks, I had thought of Singapore before, the only thing that does put me off a little is how densely populated it is. I'd really want to live out in the middle of nowhere with space to keep chickens or whatever. As far as I knew, the countries where dogs are eaten for meat actually breed them solely for that purpose. A documentary that I watched showed a dog farm, where they had a breed of meat dogs, but the owner also had their own 'pet' dog that was a completely different breed that they just wouldnt consider eating. I guess it may be different elsewhere though. I have no problem with people eating dogs, after all, people eat sheep, goats, cows, insects, snails, frogs, kangaroo and crocodile - to name but a few! I've known many people with pet sheep, and when I was younger, we had pet pygmy goats, so I have no qualms with it at all.

I'm from Romania and I can tell you that, regardless the issue of stray dogs,it is probably one of the worst countries from this point of view. You will find stray dogs in most of Romanian cities and they represents a real threat to people;it's still a very delicate problem in Romania and in my city, because the authorities claim that they do their best to gather these animals off the streets, sterilize them and place them in special shelters, and yet they still appear in the streets and it is dangerous to go even on the main streets, especially at night because of those dogs. It's a truly serious problem and the best solutions to solve it haven't been found yet.

Hello there! I am from Philippines. There are many stray dogs around here but it still depends on the town. Like in Manila area, there are rare stray dogs because the local authorities and the PAWS is sure to pick up stray dogs. Dog bites had been a problem so there is a campaign for stray dogs here
