When your computer automatically shuts down, there are several possibilities to look at, it would either be an issue with the operating system or the hardware itself. Your processor is still decent on my standard however, you might want to consider getting a new Memory. 480 MB of RAM would not be enough to Run some programs that requires high resources. Also, judging from the years that the computer is in use, you might also want to cleanly reinstall the Operating system for a fresh start, make sure to back-up all of your files before doing this. An NTFS partition would help for back-up.

It seems that you should upgrade your processor in order to enjoy uninterrupted service.

As your computer automatically shuts down when it runs high on applications, primarily it looks like a Memory issue; try to run limited number of applications. Games may consume high memory and the system may go out of it. If possible try to upgrade the memory to ~2GB.
