Can dogs predict earthquakes?

I have a pet dog, a 4 month old shih tzu and I put his cage inside my room. Last night around 12:00 AM my dog started to bark and jump frantically in his cage, I was a bit annoyed since I was so tired that time and badly needed a good sleep. And then when I open the lights, I saw that he pooped inside his cage. So I clean it up and went to sleep, at around quarter to 1AM, he again bark madly as if something is wrong, I didn't move or stood up since I really wanted to sleep. After a couple of minutes, my bed is racking for I though he escaped in his cage and wanted to jump on my bed but when I saw my stethoscope that was hanging on my cabinet knob dancing left and right, I realized it was a quake. Do they really predict quakes? If you search the net, you could read some stories about dog wildly bark before an earthquake or animals went missing before an earthquake comes. Can they really sense it? what's your experience or thoughts about this?

I haven't met this situation, because there is seldom earthquakes in our place, but I have read some report about it! Some dogs can realise the earthquake before it is happening about twenties mimutes. These dogs did everything like barking or pull the people out of the room to notice them what will happen. Dogs always save their owner and other people instead of running themsleves. How selfless they are. So, we must love them, protect them, give them a warm home.

Thanks for your post. At first I was kinda annoyed and irritated when my puppy bark wildly, but then when I realized that he could save my life in the future, I was so happy about it.

Yes, most animals are more sensitive than humans and so seem to be able to 'predict' earthquakes. In fact, nearly all earthquakes have small 'pre-shocks' before the main quake, sometimes minutes and hours before. Dogs and other animals feel these and know that something is wrong; humans are generally so occupied with other things that they don't notice them.

I really think so too. And since they are usually on the ground, I think they can predict a quake. Thanks for you share!
