Do you take your plants with you on vacation?

Travel plants - Usually when taking a plant on a trip I avoid those in bloom or bearing fruit. Usually, I take fresh cuttings and hope they will take root along the way.

Sometimes I do, but this summer I went away for 2 months and left all of my plants behind. I sure hope some of them are still alive upon our return. If you have ever taken a plant with you on vacation, which kind of plant was it and how did that turn out?

Most of them were fine and in fact one of the orchids was flowering! I did leave full spectrum lights on over them on a timer, and they were hydropinic plants so they started out with plenty of water. I added you, too.

I could barely believe my eyes when I read the headline to this post. I am not alone. Yes!! Okay, don't laugh alright. I realize that this will likely sound crazy. I grow a lot of plants. Year Round. I make plants from seeds and from cuttings so this leaves me with many different plants at different stages. My travels are very complex ed so I wont bother elaborating. Let's just say I travel and sometimes I can not leave the youngest of the baby plants so guess what? They do come with me. In a flat or two, or three. I know this seems so ridiculous but seedlings need special care that not many are willing to put up with. I can get some to take care of most of the plant material but depending on what I am growing, they may have to come with me. Echinacea is very delicate in that it takes for ever to germinate and mature. Colorado Blue Spruce are another than needs time to maturity and care. How about you? What plants do you take with you? lol Oh it works out just fine. It is just a pain in the rear. I have a tiny sports car so I have to plan baggage around the necessity of the baby plants. As for the larger established plants, I just rig them up with a water source or else have someone water for me. I am So Glad I am not hte only one who does this.

Ah, a kindred spirit. Your travels sound wonderful. Well, in addition to sprouting food to eat along a road trip, I take my babies, like you, whatever cannot be left behind. One time it was tiny palm trees that I grew from seed, an Empress Tree, different vines. Herbs too! Two years ago over Christmas I took 3 fig trees that I had just sprouted in water. You should see them now! One of them actually bore 3 figs this summer.

I don't take my plants with me on vacation; however, my daughter takes care of them while I'm gone. You might ask a friend to care for them while your gone and they would enjoy harvesting the plants. Have a great vacation.

This really has been an enjoyable vacation and honestly it is one of the first times that I have not brought cuttings with me. I will be returning with some in September, though, as friends up here have provided me with a few plants since I got here.

It's been a long time since I last traveled days or weeks away from home never took plants or pets with me, at the time I still lived with my parents but now that I read your discussion, I think it makes sense taking plants with me if I'm ever away from home I mean people take their pets while they're on vacation, why can't I also take my plants with me? I love them all anyway :)

I do have to be careful not to take plants some places, though, as there is an agricultural checkpoint between California and Arizona.

Hi drannhh! No one took care of your plants when you left? I had plants before but I never took them whenever I went away. It's just too cumbersome because they are in big pots. I never had any small plants. Whenever I went away, my mother would take care of them.

I think my friend will go by and check on them, but I would not expect her to do much else than maybe water a bit. I did invite her to pick the strawberries and eat them as they are very sweet and good and were just coming out when we left. Also I hope the neighbors will cut the gladiolus flowers to take inside and put in vases to decorate their homes. Anemones were blooming when we left, too, and the tomato plant had some little red grape sized ripe fruit on it.

Not on vacation, I do not think, but I have moved plants before, from California to Oklahoma and then on to Kansas. I cannot imagine a two month vacation, I have cats. I hope your plants are okay. What kind were the ones you left behind?

LOL, that is why although I love cats I do not have them, awwww. Well the glads were in bloom when I left and there were ripe strawberries and more flowers getting ready to become berries, and some tomatoes and big clusters of grapes on the vine that I rooted from cuttings 2 years ago. I also had some anemones blooming and lots and lots of lemon grass leafing out.
