Should military service be compulsory or not? Why so?

Hi there! I was reading an article about military service in our country, recently many young men have been taken to army. It's an annual procedure in our country - when a male citizen has become 18 y.o. it is his duty to pass the military training which lasts from 8 to 11 months. It's a compulsory procedure, but you also may choose an alternative and serve at some hospital as an orderly. Most of the young men still choose to rather go to army though. You are not obliged to pass the training if your health condition does not allow you to. However, there are countries, where military service is not compulsory. I personally think that compulsory service (conscription) suites countries with small population. Big countries like USA or Russia can rely on volunteer service. What do you think? Is it important that all men pass the military training or should they have a right to choose?

hello... your Qs is very much valid in dis very delicate world's political situation, at the same time u ve answered the Qs itself... indeed!! big countries with large demographic advantage dont need compulsory military service... but smaller countries with lots of hostile neighbouring states very much require compulsory military service.. example Isreal, South Korea, dis countries are surrounded by unpredictable hostile military leaning states... by givin its citizens a compulsory military service it ll come handy in times of war n conflicts...

Yep, you're right: it all depends on size of population available for military service and political attitudes of neighboring countries. In case of Israel and South Korea they both have hostile neighbors who might attack them any moment so they have to stay sharp and possess a military large enough to defend the country against an aggression. Thanks for responding! ;)

I most certainly think it should be compulsory for male citizens of the age of 18 to join the military service. The military helped guys to become men and to have respect for others. So If I could have a vote on whether or not to make it compulsory again I would definitely say it should be compulsory.

I agree, military service has beneficial effects on young men's discipline. It's a quite widespread belief that army helps boys become men. Thanks for sharing your views! :)

I think people should have their right to choose. I think entering the military service should be treated in the same well as all other careers. You choose your career but not your government choosing it for you and I think this happens in all the capitalism countries. However, compulsory military service has its advantage as well. The citizen can be prepared for army life and they can have better health condition after those training as well as making some contribution to the society. However, I still think that people should have the right to choose what they would like to do in their life as long as it does not cause any harm to the others.

Well yea, if people are not forced to do something and they just do what they want, they do it better than if they were forced to do this. I also agree that voluntary and compulsory service both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)

Luckily military service in my country is no longer compulsory and I consider it shouldn't be compulsory anywhere in the world, people should have the right of choice and armies should be made up only of professionals, well paid and motivated to do it.I read about countries in which young people have to spend two years of their lives in military service and I'm glad I don't live in such a country, two years is a very long time when you are forced to live in an environment you dislike and in which you have to obey orders all the time.

Your idea seems to be good, however, sometimes it's impossible to assemble an army large enough to defend the country if using only professional mercenaries. Small nations don't have that much manpower to afford allowing people to choose whether to defend the country or not. But yea, as you said free will is always best choice for everyone, but not always possible. Thanks for answering! ;)

i think voluntary is better, because here in the philippines its like that, every people have their own interests, different capacity too, what if they cant do the trainings, because lets face it not are all strong and can do the training... so i think its better if its their choice and not force to do it.

Free will is good, can't deny that. Here in Estonia we have a compulsory military service, but people must pass health condition check in order to be drafted for military service. If you are not strong enough for military service, you won't be drafted. Thanks for responding!

Only if it is deemed necessary. I say if we haven't met the standards or numbers, then consider other means.

Yep, there are cases where countries have no other choice in order to keep their defensive ability on a required level. Thanks for dropping by!

I think that the military service should not be compulsory. Since if the boys have to spend few years in the military, even if it seems the time is not long. However, it's their precious golden time. When they come back from the military, many things have changed and this is very sad. When people do something unwillingly, the result won't go well. The force will not create nice result. I love China

Thanks for expressing your view! I've heard that China does not have compulsory service and I know that your army is large enough even with this voluntary system. However, smaller nations don't have other choice, cause otherwise we would have very few manpower for defending our liberty in case of a conflict. I agree with you - military service may take up a lot of time and some people would rather like to use this time for studying or working and not digging trenches and firing rifles. But yeah, sometimes nations just don't have other choices.

Compulsory military service on all males reaching 18 years old in a small country or country that has small population is a good idea, at least the government will has less problem meeting its national defense need and make it harder for bigger hostile nation to occupy it as its male population can be mobilized to step up its defenses in time of invasion. Yes it is important for small country to expect all their able body men to pass military training for the sake of its own national defense purposes.

Yep, that is the case here in Estonia. With population of only 1.3 million, every man that could hold a rifle would be valuable in case of hostile invasion. Large majority of men go through the military training and they also asked to attend regular exercises after the military service to keep their skills on a proper level. I think that we have around 6000 personnel in regular service and more than 200 000 men in reserve. Thanks for replying! :)

Well in my country, it's a small country and every boy has to go through what we call, National Service for 2 years. We have a fitness test called the NAPFA test in school. If we do well and get gold, we get 2 months off, that's just the bonus the government gives us. But to me, for a small country, it's still better for everyone to have National Service so as to have that kind of unity in everyone so that when something happens, we can fight as one nation. Perhaps for bigger countries, they may have extra weapons like nuclear weapons so they can rely on that but for smaller countries, it's better for every boy to go for National Service. I feel it should be made compulsory for small countries to toughen the boys up but it's also good that every boy goes through this phase in their life. It's a kind of self-discipline too and it they also have at least 2 years to make wise decisions too!

Yep, I agree with you. Small nations can't rely on voluntary service, cause less population means less volunteers so we could end up having a very small amount of troops with other men totally unprepared for warfare and not even knowing how to handle weapons. In case of compulsory service, a country manages to train a lot of reserve manpower that can be called to arms in case of a full scale conflict. And of course military service has (mostly) positive impact on young men's discipline! Thanks for answering! :)

Over here, military service is compulsory too. The service length is much longer than your country. The young men have to spend at least two years in military service. if they are unfit, as in they are too fat or never exercise enough, they would have to serve for longer period. I think many young people learn about discipline from military service. It is good in a way. If young women are drafted into military service, that is even better. It can prevent them from spending all their time buying shoes and handbags, and let them learn about hard work and discipline from young age.

Oh, two years seems like too long for me. Here we have a choice of going for 8 months of basic training or going for 11 in order to receive a specialty (anti-tank, mortar etc.) and a higher rank. I agree, military helps to develop discipline both in men and women and makes them actually honor such values as comradeship, teamwork and much more. Thanks for responding! :)

Only if your country has little population and or experienced war before. Military is important for a country even today that we may seem at peace. Not also just for national defense. Military can engage in may mission like in case of disaster or calamity. The military is very flexible to any situation. They can also minimize the crime and provide enough protection to citizens.

I agree with you - military does play many roles in contemporary world. Along with it's main goal (protecting the citizens of the country) military can also help military of allied countries engaged in a conflict or bring order to the streets of country's own cities. Troops can be also sent to aid regions devastated by natural disaster or as an additional backup during police operations. Thanks for responding, have a great day! :)
