I swear, my dog tunes me out more often than not.

I guess you could call it selective hearing. He doesn't always listen to me. I don't know if he's actually going deaf or not, or if he just simply chooses not to listen to me. Whatever the case, it gets difficult with him now. He's getting on in age and is starting to have more trouble getting around, but he still deals with it. I know he hears some things, when I ask him if he wants to go out, his ears will perk up, and when I ask him if he's hungry, the same thing happens. But there are other times when I want to take him out where he ignores me. And when he's out in the backyard, he wont always listen when I tell him it's time to go inside. I'm hoping it doesn't get any worse.

Is he a generally well trained dog? If not then maybe that's the problem. But if you've trained him well enough then I think it's possible that he is losing his hearing. How old is he exactly? I would take him to the vet just for a check-up to see if everything is alright with him. Better safe than sorry! :)

He's almost 11 years old. Been well trained since before I got him a couple of years ago.

Haha! Stowyk above took the words that I was thinking while reading this in my email alerts. That your dog is like a child, they listen when they want not on command. Too funny and hopefully he will not continue the habit.

My little one (little no more really, she is 4 years old!) has sharp ears only when it is her 'biscuit' time. The sound of the plastic bag is an alert for her that she comes running wherever she is and she also knows it is 7 p.m. Pets tend to hear only what is soothing to their ears!
