Christians claim to be 'followers of Christ' in the way they live outside of church. Church is sort of a home-base where they take off the heavy burden of 'glory' they carry (debt, credit, responsibilities, worries, etc.) and 'let God handle it.' Following Christ, we are given the best example to follow when--after He had been beaten & crucified--He forgave the very people who were punishing Him, saying "Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing."

Being a Christian means following Christ's words by heart. Going to church, love others, charity and so forth as part of the Dogma of Christianity that should be abide. Christ is love. Love is Christ. His sacrifice by dying on the cross is one definition of love. Being a Christian means having selfless love to share and help the people regardless of race or religion.

Going to church doesn't make you a Christian, any more than going to McDonalds makes you a hamburger. What if you were alone on a deserted island or alone in the desert? I could still be a Christian and enjoy fellowship with my Lord and Savior. And as a matter of fact, I would probably feel closer to Him then ever. I wouldn't have all the distractions of the world and I would have mostly Him to rely on and talk to. A true Christian desires only to please Jesus...

I agree. Being a christian means you believe in Christ and following Christ's sample. I'm catholic christian. It's about our relationship with Christ, Our Lord. Follow God's way.

A christian is a believer in Christ and a follower of Him. Believe in Him as your personal Lord and Savior. Follow His ways all the days of your life. Following God isn't that easy in this world full of SIN. Sin separates us from God. But God is so merciful that He forgives us from all our sins, if we just confess to Him all our unrighteousness. And His LOVE is so powerful, that He gave us SALVATION. It is a gift that we should receive! A gift is free, all paid for and most of all, it is given out of love. So why should anyone not receive such a gift like God has given us??

Hi katie: For me it has to be a combination of both things. Participation on your church is very important to keep your faith and your values but if you just talk you are not being a good Christian, it's also fondamental to demonstrate what you believe in your actions by being a compassionate person as you mentioned. Literally, Christian means followers of Christ, If you follow Christ, it means following what He does and expecting to do what He did: seek God the Father, he healed the sick, cast out demons, preach. To follow Him is to seeking Him and really worshiping Him with all my heart(Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you) because as I behold Him, I am becoming more like Him. I am becoming more caring, forgiving I would feel the heart of God for others, that would make me love others also. And everything would just flow and not be out of my own effort if I just behold Him.

For me , being a Christian is both. I have to go to church on Sundays because it's our worship time to God. I can be a Christian too by loving others, being forgiving and considerate of people's feelings.
