Should seniors drive or not?

Well someone today said that seniors shouldnt be driving. They dont really have any good reasons for saying this. The man who started this said that seniors are a pain in the a** on the roads. He said that 20% have accidents versus 60% of young adults between the ages of 16-20. So why take seniors off the road then if they doing good according to those numbers. I know a lot of people in their 80's who are still driving and they're doing great. They're not driving slow either. They follow traffic when on the highways. So they say we should keep in shape, stay healthy so we can live to a ripe old age, but then what will you have to look forward to when you get to that age? You wont be able to drive, so you'll always be waiting for someone to pick you up, or you'll need to have money so you can afford to take a taxi. Forget taking the bus at that age as its too dangerous. So what do you think. Should seniors stop driving because they're too old even if they still can and arent causing any accidents?

Well sure if they are able too drive then why not? But I have seen a few elderly people that should not be behind the wheel it is like they don't know what they are doing.

I have seen quite a few younger people who should not be behind the wheel because they do not care what they are doing.

Sounds like its not a matter of age then. Ive seen people of all age that shouldnt be driving. Young drivers will say that older drivers drive too slow, and older drivers say that younger ones are driving way too fast. Im thinking it might be like bicycle and cars, they both fight for a right to the roads. Is there a solution to this problem, without pointing fingers or having seniors punished for a few and being stuck at home, having to rely on someone else to drive them around all the time?

I think they should be tested more frequently for vision and hearing problems, but if they pass, I don't have a problem with them being on the road.

Hi MagicalB ubbles I think it depends on the mental and physical condition and whether or not senile. Some middle aged people people are worse drivers than some elderly people I have seen driving cars. Some older people already realize that they are no longer fit to drive while others are perfectly capable of driving long distances.

Hi Hatley! Yes Ive seen those too and not only old people, but younger ones. They feel safe because nobody is watching them !! Yes if they're fit to drive, why not!!

Of course seniors should be able to drive if they are safe drivers. I actually think some senior drivers are better than others because they drive at a slower pace. People who drive like maniacs upset me. And I don't think that an elderly person would want to be stuck at home with no way to get around.

I feel the same, trying to imagine what it would be like to be old, healthy and not able to go anywhere and having to wait for someone to drive me there or take the bus or pay for a taxi. It must be awful, having to rely on others all the time. Of course, you need to be able to drive, meaning relatively healthy. Would you agree if they were to test people at a certain age? The argument about seniors driving was that with the baby boomers getting old, it'll be nearly impossible to call them all in for a test drive. So what do you think?

That is not really a good argument. Senior drivers should continue to go in as scheduled to renew their licenses and past a certain age, or if they have certain difficulties they get test drives. Sometimes doctors will do physical tests and either vouch for or sign against renewing licenses.

Here where I live, if you're on certain medications, they send a questionnaire to be filled by the doctor and returned to them before they issue your driver's permit. We renew our permits here every year without a test. Its just so that they can make us pay a lot for that little plastic card!!

I think it depends on the person. My mother is 82 and I wouldn't put her behind the wheel of car if hers or my life depended on it. Her vision is bad and she has terrible depth perception. My father on the other hand is fine to drive. I think perhaps when you get a certain age you should be tested more often. Let's face it, some people are stubborn and don't feel they ever have a problem and they drive when they really shouldn't and can cause an accident. I also believe people that have too many accidents should also be tested as well, regardless of their age. I am lucky that my mother knows her limitations and doesn't even want to drive anymore. My father on the other hand will probably always drive and I will have to force him to give me his keys.

I know what you mean. It might be a problem when its time to ask your dad to stop driving. One of my cousin was going through this with her father and instead of starting a fight, she simply called his doctor and told him about this. SO....the doctor stopped him. No fights with my cousin because the doctor never told!! Ive also known a man who was the sweetest man you could know but even at a very young age, he was a terrible driver. Everybody thought it was because of his age, but he had always been that way. There must be a God sometimes to have protected those around him on the road . Finally his doctor stopped him driving at 92 yrs old......phew!! I think its a good idea to test people who have lots of accidents......as long as they are responsible for it. It does happen that your parked car gets hit and if you're not in it, then it cant be your fault.

Forgot to say that usually women know their limitations as your mom does. Mine did too when she was too sick to drive, she simply said she wouldnt anymore.

Absolutely. My great grandmother is 94 and she still drives to the store every few days. I don't think you can make a statement like "seniors shouldnt drive" because different people are in different shape regardless of age. Like I said my great grandma is 94 and she does everything for herself. I know people in their 60's that are in much worse shape than her. So to be fair there cannot be a law that prohibits a certain age group from driving (other than being at least 16)

Oh good for her!! Isnt it lovely that she can still be independant at 94 yrs old? I think its great. I feel silly now when I say my dad is still driving at 85 yrs old Nothing to yak about here . You're right, if your grandmother is able to drive and alert, why take that right away from her and have her housebound....I bet that would surely kill her!!

Seniors, like everyone else vary in their ability to drive. I hope I will know when to quit. We need seniors participating in all aspects of society. I do not know why anyone would say that seniors should not be driving. Unless of course he believes we should all be given free limousine service.
• Canada

I doubt we'll get free limo service Must be someone who has it against seniors. It was on the news, some guy said that seniors should be taken off the road, yet he proved that young adults in the age of 16-20 had more accidents. He didnt make any sense but he has followers and that worries me a lot. I know some seniors who decided to stop driving because they felt they couldnt anymore. Ive never seen a younger driver do the same though I cant imagine wanting to take this right from people once they reach a certain age. Might as well supply the meds to kill yourself then.

here in canada, people after the age of 80 are tested each year for their driving but i think it should start at 75. my mom is 73 and though she hasnt had many accidents, when i am with her she seems to have a lot of near misses that she doesnt even notice!

Each year? Im in Canada also and dad is 85 and I dont remember him going back to be tested. He has to provide a medical from his doctor but nothing else. If your mom doesnt seem to be safe on the road, I think its up to you and your family to try and talk to her then. Not the government taking away licences of ALL older people because only a few cant drive. Im wondering if your mom was a good driver at a young age??

I think if if the senior is a competent driver, they should be able to keep their license. However, they need to be held to the rules of the road, just as everyone else. If they are causing accidents or not driving correctly, they should probably lose their license. But, it needs to be done in a fair manner. One accident doesn't necessarily mean someone is incompetent. I think it is probably devastating to seniors who have their licenses taken away. It has to be a big hit to their self-esteem.

Yes its really bad when they are sick and their licences are taken away from them. It killed one of my uncles. He went into a deep depression because of this. Also his licence were taken away too fast, he had surgery but was fine after a few months. He never planned on driving right after his surgery but his kids decided he shouldnt drive.....sad story.

Hi MagicalBubbles, seniors who have no eye sight problem should continue to live independently, and that includes driving. Hopefully they do not drive around during peak hour, or else the working adults would blame them for adding to the massive traffic jam. I think if those seniors avoid certain highways where people drive very fast, nobody would blame them.

Hi Scheng!! I agree with you that if they can see where there going and are alert, they should be driving. My dad is 85 yrs old and he's still driving on the highways and following traffic.....even passing some people who are driving too slow, mumbling about them being too old Their lives might depend on driving for some of them.

This guy will probably end up in the percentage of young adults who have accidents having this kind of attitude towards other drivers on the road. I don't see why seniors should be any more dangerous drivers than those speeding ones or drunken ones. If they passed their driving test and are certified to be a healthy person. They should have the right to do their own driving and be free from the trouble of finding alternatives.

I bet he's driving and spending all his time trying to find an older person driving than keeping his eyes on the road. Karma might hit him in the face, you're right....he might be the one in an accident. I cant imagine taking this right from a whole generation because of age.

That is an unfair thing to do to the senoirs. They have the right to drive and why deprive them of that. I am sure they are sensible enough to decide not to drive if they are not fit to drive. And I think those who are still driving knows what they are doing more than the younger people and that they are more cautious when driving since they are more responsible and more experienced at driving..

I feel the same. Why take it away from them and have them waiting for others to drive them somewhere. Might have quite a lot of seniors stuck at home waiting and waiting for a lift that will never come.

Yes some drivers under the age of 20 are quite dangerous on the road. But they want to take the older drivers licences away from them, preventing them to drive when they reach a certain age.

I feel the same also, but apparently, some people here are trying to take that right away from them. I dont think they'll let that go without a fight though. Id hate to be in a fight with a senior!!

If they can pass the eye tests and road tests, there is no reason they should be pulled off the road. Unless they have a medical condition that would endanger their or other lives, that would be the only reason they shouldn't be on the road. I was in an accident a few years ago, the guy who ran a red light was older and on medication. He didn't take it that morning though. I have driven past slow drivers, a few of which I've seen are older, but I guess they're just trying to stay safe and cautious. I guess it just depends on the senior.

I feel the same, if they can see and of course take their medications if they need it and this goes for all ages. I know some young people who are on medication. Its true that some of them are playing it safe and are being cautious, but Ive seen others just follow the traffic and do very well too. I guess its like doctors, you have some good ones and some very bad ones.......at all ages!!!

Hiya magical, Depends on the state of health and their ability I suppose. I have seen many Drivers of that age and although their eye sight is not brilliant they go in for check ups and will still keep driving till they can no longer. Dangerous Drivers can have any age really I have just seen one come in through the Gate a lot of them drive round here like this is the Grand Prix and they are not senior drivers at all most of them are young girls or middle aged men with quite bad manners. On these Roads I see quite a few senior People drive as they have been forced to live in the middle of nowhere with no nearby Shops so they still have to drive to get around. I think its a good thing for them to do so as they are in excellent health as well. One of them is about ninety and still driving well for his age. xxx

If they prove themselves to be alert enough to be on the road, then in fact sure they should drive. If they can safely drive, then they should be allowed to drive. If they shouldn't, well sorry they shouldn't. Then again, that's not just a senior thing when you really think about it. That should be a thing for people of any age. There are people who are in their twenties that I would be far more scared with being on the road than any senior citizen. Granted, that's not saying that there are some seniors that should be as far from the road as possible. But there are some that are going to really be able to drive. Then again, if you want my completely honest opinion, about half if not more of the people on the road, no matter what age, do have no business whatsoever with being on the road. That's another matter entirely but still if seniors are capable, then why not, just like any other person. I've feared more for my life from the teenagers or twenty some years on the road than any senior and other people in between as well.

My thoughts exactly, Ive also seen young adults who scares the bejesus out of me driving and actually ended up having accidents. You see those in all age groups. I too think that if they can see where there going and are alert, why not! Why take this away from them once they get to a certain age if they can still do it.

I don't think seniors should stop driving. I think it should be a free will of whether they want to or not. Anyway at times I've taken cabs to get to places, I have found some of the drivers to be old people, not really old but they said they were retired people. Anyway they were excellent drivers and like you said, followed the traffic rules and regulations.

You're right. Ive seen people of all age be bad drivers and good drivers, so as far as Im concerned, it has nothing to do with age and more with personality.

I think that seniors should be able to drive like everyone else as long as they can pass the driving and eye test like everyone else. In some states they offer a life time drivers licenses I don't know if I completely agree with that.

Life time drivers licences?? Well I think thats what we have here. I passed my eye and driving test when I first got my licence but havent since. I think people over 70 have to again but Im not sure. Dad who's 85 and still driving, had to because he had surgery on his knee, so Im not sure if he would have had to without the surgery.
