How do I get over my technophobia?

Genetic engineering, nanotechnology, Facebook's facial recognition software, surveillance cameras, police's iphone based scanners, artificial intelligence, self driving cars, robots. I don't like to admit it, but I am terrified of advanced technology. Any advanced technology. I want nothing more than to be born in 1865. An era when one could have privacy. An era when it was not so easy to destroy the world. In my opinion, life got way to dangerous and complicated after WWII. However, that's a nice fantasy on my part. I have no choice but to live out my life in the 21st century. Having techophobia is going to make that very difficult. The irony is, I drool over the internet and tablets, but I can't steady much into technology without going into panic mode. I see advanced tech as a threat and I don't trust humanity to use it ethically. The best I can hope for is that the above list of tech doesn't mature much in my lifetime. Of course that is a very shaky hope to cling to. So my question is: do you have any suggestions for getting over technophobia? I dare say my fear is getting out of hand.

I think that the fear of anything comes from ignorance. If you learn more about the technology that causes you this phobia maybe you can over come it. Since reincarnation comes only after life on this earth is over you might as well either try what I have mentioned or stay totally away.

I have no desire to hole up in the forest with my bow and tanning knife. I guess staying away isn't an option for me. :)

I have the same fear too. I don't know why but the more advanced the technologies to more terrified I am . Maybe it is due to the challenge I need to face in using those. They keep changing and leave us behind. What a weird we are chasing after them not the opposite. It is proved. When we are still use the previous they already invented the upwards versions till it seems to me that we can't reach and catch the latest. To look updated and in process avoiding to be outdated by hook or by crook we get in ourself with the technologies. I don't want to be with them too much..and yes it makes me scared.

They never there for 3 years as the latest version will come up in just a few months. They are really excited about creating more gadgets but they are just the same. If only they have made some changes the changes are so little. If user made the wrong choice it could just a waste. I am indeed had bought some gadget and found it useless so better need to know on how to purchase a right thing to use so I don't have to feel scared to it.(^^)

I really hate how the tech companies have to keep rolling out a new generation each ear. I mean I would like to keep the version I buy for three, five or more years before having to have another! If you think about it, it really is such a waste of money.

As with anything new, if we absorb it slowly and learn and become accustomed to it gradually, it will be a useful tool. If we were dropped from the 19th century to the 21st century, we could easily suffer from culture shock and panic! We know that "the powers that be" and not always ethical or even prudent, but we have to continue to hope and believe in the human instinct for self-preservation. And don't forget to pray!

That's true. No one is forcing us to accept it all right now. Thanks estherlou! :)

I guess I am the wrong person to answer this post. I don't use my phone unless I Have to. I am not on Facebook because I cherish my privacy. I don't even drive a car because I have too much of a hair trigger temper and when I was 16 I feared I would kill someone. But I do love my lap top. I prefer to chat. And when it comes to robots , I still see them as some geek's fantasy. I can and will live very happily without these new toys. I guess the best way to get over the fear is to go and find out about the new toys . Seek out that geek that Knows about the new products and ask them questions.

So you have a choosing process then? I suppose part of what helps is realizing that all of these gadgets are not necessary.

Think of the Amish and the Original peoples of the Amazon, South America, Asia and Africa. They are not on Facebook !They don't own a Blackberry! They live with so much less and They are here in the 21st Century! It is not written that Everybody Has to have a Tablet And A cellphone or they cease to matter! In fact Here in the States we Have Choice!
