How important is work location to you?

i mean, is it important that your workplace is quite near to where you live, so that you do not get stressed too much with the travel time from home to work and vice versa. I think for me, it is indeed very important because i have tried working in an office about 1 and a half hour away from home (public transport - sometimes reached 2 hours) and i get so stressed out and i have to get out of home early and go home a bit later too. so for you? what do you think?

Yeah, work location is important to me but all places I went no matter for work or school the locations is always took time more and I never get places near my home. Never. My primary and secondary school, college, workplace..everyone of them required me to get up early and start my day earlier than others. It usually took 2 hours to get to the location. I wonder why....I hates wasting 4 hours and plus just for that.(^^)

You must be staying in KL. I know how the traffic is in KL. Penang also has the worse traffic jams but at least the distance is not that far from one place to another.

Right I am in KL Jlyn..I am sure traffic in Penang is just the same with KL. Always need to stand for that 4 hours in a bus/LRT and feel really tired when I get home.It such a waste.Waste of energy, time and money ...

The traffic here is not as bad as KL because the cars are always on the move but very SLOWLY. And since Penang is just a small island, the destination takes shorter time to reach, compared to KL. And I don't have to drive so far to send my kids to school. Just a 5 minutes drive.

Hello chiyosan, Location is always an important factor for me when i join in an organisation. The present organisation where i work is just 30 minutes away from my home. My first work place was around 1 hour away from my home so i used to cry when i used to get stuck in traffic jams when coming back from office as it used to become so tiresome and always had so little time to give to family so after leaving that i realized that i should always keep this thing in the mind while changing job.I have got so many offers for higher salary too but declined as they were far away from from my home.I know health & time are important than money.

For us, it's very important. Right now, the place where my husband works is in an area where housing is very expensive, but unfortunately he cannot get a different job. Fortunately, they have staff housing, so our rent isn't as much as it could be. I work nearby, so I can take the car or use public transit, and my husband can bus. We know some people who have commutes of over an hour long, which sounds very unpleasant.

Hi chiyosan! Work location is very important to me now. To have my work place so near to my home is very convenient. First of all, I don't spend much on fare. Second, I don't have to wake up so early just so I won't be late to work. Before I used to work so far from home. I only get to go home every weekend since the fare is so expensive and the travel time is at least two hours. Even before that, I used to work so far from home that I only get to go home once every two weeks or once a month. It was really a sacrifice back then. That is why I'm so fortunate to have been transferred near my home. And it's convenient too because I can pursue my masters degree in a school where quality education is very reputable.

I really prefer working in a company near our house. That is because there are really times when I feel lazy in going to work and I really work too slow in preparing to go to work because of the laziness. End part, I will be late in going to work, and since I hate to be late, the attendance bonus is too big for me to lose is not so good. So I end up riding a taxi..taxi is cheaper when your home is near. Also, when going home it will be too fast for you to reach your bed after a long days stress.

Your working place shouild be at a reasonable distance, which means it should not take more than an hour to go there from your home. Unless you are a traveler working on assignments at distant places staying over night and then go home and have a few days off work as free days. But is it a Monday Friday work during regular daytime hours it should be nearby home. That's my opinion.

i agree with you qee, one should always at least see to it to work and to find a job where they won't be inconvenienced all the time. work won't always be fixed to a certain time and there are always many factors when you have to travel long hours so you can go home and or go to work and be on your way hours before...

Hi chiyosan, I like to work near my place. It's very convenient as I can save a lot of travel time to go to my workplace and back to home. It's worse still I have to wake up very much earlier to avoid the heavy traffic in the morning. If not I will reach my destination late. Such situation did happen several times during the couple of years when I worked in the office which I had to spend at least an hour and 45 minutes riding on my own vehicle to reach there. It's really tedious to consume such long time travelling to and fro 5 days a week I waked up at 5am and got everything ready before 5.45 am, the time I left for my destination. On account of travelling alone that early in the morning daily was not that safe, for I had to travel on the way passing through rubber estate, oil palm plantation and a short distance of lonely mountain area, I then stayed there in a rental unit then. It's sad that I could back to my hometown once a week only as soon as the office was over at 5pm. That was the happiest moment to leave for home

Hi chiyosan! I would have to agree with you about long commutes being extra stressful. When I had to work and commute and take public transportation, which usually meant two busses each way after a sometimes 10 hour day it put alot of extra stress on me. I already had high pressured jobs to begin with because I was a Legal Secretary/ and Medical Assistant. The Legal positions were the worst and the hours were sometimes long and I would sometimes get home late in the evening and almost missed the "last bus". It made it alot more difficult to worry about getting my work done and then worrying about making the bus to get home!

I have two jobs at the moment. From Monday to Friday I work close to my home. It is nice, because I don't have to spend money of transportation and when I finish work I can go straight to my home. I don't have to wait for a train or a bus and I am happy that I don't have to commute every day. In the weekend I don't work in my own town, and I have to spend time on transportation every week. I can live with that, but of course it would have been nice to be able to work in my own town all the time.

Work location or the distance from it can indeed by important. Having a long commute through traffic can add to one's daily stress level and it takes more of your leisure time away from you. It can also be costly and detracts from the wage you are making at the job. Being close enough to your work location that you could walk or ride a bike can be a big plus and a huge savings in expenses. Of course, the ultimate short commute is being able to work from home. That one can't be beat!

Hi,chiyosan~ Well,it really depends on what job I'm gonna have after I graduate. If my wishes come true and I get to work as a freelancer, the work location won't matter to me at all.I would love to travel around and get into a cafe shop or somewhere else and enjoy my working atmosphere. But if I ended up working in some company, then I would prefer to choose one near my place. It would kill me if I need one or more hours to take a bus or drive my own car to work.Especially the morning rush would drain my patience.Possibly,it would make the whole day unpleasant.Grrr~

I'm right now in that situation, having 1 and half hour of travel in the best cases. After near 4 years of such stress I can say that it's important to have a work near your home. Anyway, I'm still more worried about the work quality, salary and environment than distance as I prefer much to have an stable job and income rather something just comfortable. Of course the ideal would be to have both but being force to choose I take the stable work source. I can always plan to move to a nearer home at a latter time if the position is worth it.

Work location is one of my primarily considerations, since transportation will be a key element in daily work. I can tolerate transportation, if the job is agreeable. However, weather and transportation costs also are a big consideration. Also, I am a person who sometimes gets lost in an unfamiliar place so I can waste time, effort and money just to get to the workplace (perhaps in the early stages). I can attest to the stress of transportation (since some drivers of public transport don't care if their passengers are already late just to pick up commissions from profit, no offense but it's true). Perhaps that is the reason why my mother isn't comfortable to the idea of me working in the metropolis. She said that she already experienced it and it will do me good just to stay near. I can't disagree with her but sometimes work opportunities thrives more in the metro rather than in the province.

that is true and i agree, transportation from and to work if you leave an hour away with no traffic can really get to your nerves and it will stress you, burn you out and will have you lose your mind at times and you'll think its just peers and work that is bothering you. so for me it is always wise to choose a convenient location where you can work. tanks for your time in your response to the discussion. appreciate your sharing this to us... hope to see you around and have a happy mylotting day!

Yes it is very important to me. I am so used to working long hours, but sometimes I don't feel it because I can be home in 15-20 mins depending on the traffic situation. I also cherish sleeping in, so it's important to me that I can get to work in the minimum amount of time :) I have never studied nor worked anywhere that took more than 45 minutes away from home, maybe even less in most cases. I love it!

Hi chi, I don't mind the location as long as the pay is good. I would make it a point to establish a home near the workplace out of the pay I shall get. I work near my residence, just a five minute walk away, no problem with it. I get home before dark, and still have a few things to do until bedtime at ten. Certainly, being nearer would save us a lot of time and trouble.

Yes definitely, location is a factor for me in choosing my work. Having a near location for work helps you get ample rest due to decrease travel time. It really is stressful in commuting or driving to work. Even sleeping during travel isn't as relaxing as sleeping at home. And yes, the control on the time is a big advantage too for small proximity home area. Well, If ever I work on somewhere very far from our place, I always consider relocating or renting rather than exhaust myself going back and forth with all the stressful travel time. Also, traffic won't be an enemy if your place is near your work.

It is really important for me when my workplace is near my place beacuse this will save time, no stress, no traffic and lot of sleep to save. Before my workplace is two short rides in my place about 15 mins travel just to me at the office and this routine lasted for 2 years. But unfortunately I was assigned to the other office and I suffered the stress of traveling just going to work. From two rides before now i need to have four rides and took me about 1 hr and 15 mins additional hours from my previous travelling time.It will cost me also a lot of the fare. When I arrived in the office I am really felt sleepy and tired and was not able to work right away because I really need to rest for a while. So a near work location will be favorable really a stress free travel..

Very important! Lol! My current workplace is around 20-30mins away from home. I once went to a job interview where the travel took me around 2 hours (not to mention the number of people who meet me head-on when I ride the local train T_T). I don't mind travelling far when it's for pleasure but travelling far almost everyday for work doesn't work for me. I mean, I'm already stressed out with my work, I don't think I can handle additional stress caused by travelling :P

Location is important to me but it also depends on the traffic one faces. Where I currently live traffic is bad in most directions so the closer to home my work is the better. However if My work was far (25km - 40km) from home and there is no traffic to work during peak hours then that would be fine too. It all depends and the route you drive and the traffic on the route. If the traffic is low I am willing to go further but if traffic is high then the closer I want my work offices to be.
