What things do you do with your family for beneficial recreation?

I think that it has become more and more difficult to find wholesome recreation for the family. Recreation and entertainment today is filled with unwholesome things and it can be very frustrating to find things that are beneficial. For us with our daughter we read a lot with her. We enjoy being outdoors. As she gets older we will do more things with her that involves animals and being at state parks. We enjoy nature and animals. We hope to instill in our daughter love for animals and being out and about and enjoying our beautiful earth. We know that many children want to spend literally all their free time indoors with video games. Theirs a balance for our family and we are hoping as she gets older she will appreciate our efforts to help her find and enjoy wholesome recreation. What things does your family enjoy?

If I had kids, I wouldn't take to movies very often, or maybe not at all. I hate how swearing has become the norm. If other people want to do it, fine. But I wouldn't want my children listening to that when there is something I can do about it. Furthermore I wouldn't want to explain to my six year old why the man is on top of the woman under the sheets. I agree when you say much entertainment today has unwholesome material. As for my family personally, we used to more majority outdoor stuff. Picnics, hikes in the national forests and drives through the national and state parks. Some of my fondness memories come from that time. Old Faithful is quite amazing in person. :) If I have kids, I would surely spend lots of time within outdoors. I would discourage video games as much as possible, as I regard those a significant waste of time.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with me. I greatly appreciate it. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who feels this way about entertainment and video games. I strongly agree with you about not taking your child to the movies if you had kids. Movies are past bad. I wish movies were like the old movies and shows. Like little house on the prairie, and the cosby show. You can't find movies like that today. And I don't care to have my daughter watch movies because like you said there are inappropriate things that adults shouldn't be seeing let alone a child. I want my daughter to have self-respect for herself and others. To respect the sacredness of marriage and movies do not do any of that. Our family really look forward to camping trips. I have never been to Old Faithful in person and I will keep that in mind. I'm sure it will be a wonderful experience if we get to go their in person. I strongly agree with you about video games. I absolutely abhor them because they do waste so much time. People and children tend to play them for hours on end. To me that is very sad, a lot of kids don't want to go outside, or play with other kids, they would rather sit in their rooms by themselves with their games. I don't want my children to grow up this way. I grew up playing with friends, using my imagination, going outside, going to parks. I want my children to enjoy these things as well.

It sounds like you are a great parent! I also agree with your stance on movies - hot character A meets hot character B and they do the deed five minutes later. In today's world of looseness, STD's and teen pregnancy, who on earth are we glorifying this in the movies? I guess children come from under cabbage leaves in the movieland. I grew up that way - all outdoors and running around with the girls. :) My parents never did buy me any video games, and I feel no regret about that. :)

You are doing a very nice job in rearing your daughter. keep it up! We don't do that when our daughter was growing up. But we would eat out once in a while . We would also watch a wholesome DVD together at home, complete with snacks to eat while watching. But we always see to it that we always go to church together always on Sundays. We have instilled good moral values in her and now she's a smart and God fearing lady. I thank God so much for helping us rear her too.

We always make it a point as our daughter was growing up to always go to church together. After that we will go buy groceries or shop sometimes. We also would take snack afterwards. When she was a kid, we brought her to the Metropolis and let her see the animals at the zoo. We take her to parks and other nice playing grounds for kids. Though , it is not always that way, i know she treasured them so much, because we took time off from our work just to have it realized.

That is so good. I'm very happy for you and your family. It is wonderful when both parents work together to instill a love for God in their child. As our children grow up they will appreciate what we have taught them and appreciate that they have loving parents who deeply care for them. Thanks so much for sharing.

Thank you so much. I'm trying to raise my daughter in an upright way. Having a meal together is important i feel. It allows the family to really communicate without the distractions of what needs to be done at home,tv, or electronics. It's enjoyable when we have a balance that involves taking care of what needs to be done and also having some enjoyable recreation. I feel helping our children to develop a close personal relationship with God is vital. When they have their own personal relationship with God they view him as a close friend and they learn to view things as he does. Things that are acceptable to him they want to do, and things that he dislikes they want to avoid. I'm sure that your daughter greatly appreciates all the values that you have instilled in her. There are a lot of children who don't have this, or adults who wish they had parents who taught them good moral values.

I am a grandmother now and even my grandchildren are not little anymore, except for the smaller 2. But we did g to parks, to the zoo, to see childrenĀ“s plays and we read and plyed with them. I have 2 daughters and when they wer little I had the Saturday morning cooking game. We made the whole diner, a cake and dessert. The kitchen ended up in mess but we had fun. I still have some of my grandsons (funny enough they are more interested than my granddaughter) to make cookies here or sweet dumplings. I also lovd to make dolls clothes with th kids and costumes for the dolls as we told an appropiate story. They would be the queens and kings with paper crowns.

You are very welcome. I soon grew tired of reading the books over and over, so those plays with dolls in which th stories were acted were a lot more interesting for all of us. Children love puppets of any kind and their disguised dolls were a real trat.

With all that you did with your children and grandchildren it seems that they had a wonderful time growing up. Having a saturday morning cooking game is so neat. That allowed for the children/grandchildren to be able to learn things about cooking and for all of you to spend quality time together. I'm diffinitely going to have to add this to my list of activities. Having little plays is very neat as well. I think these like this is very enjoyable for everyone. I'm sure that your kids enjoyed these activities and remember them. Thanks for sharing these wonderful experience and tips with me.

Hmm...let's see...biking, long walks, playgrounds, barbeque-ing at the wild areas and in all 4 seasons, too! , baking, camping, reading time....wow, many things, I suppose. We both teach our kids various survival skills, and now that they're nearly 10 years old, we'll be teaching them more things about the wildlife. It'll be fun :-) We have computers here at home but basically it's limited use, even I don't like the computer very much, and that's probably a good thing :-D

That sounds so awesome. What survival skills do you teach your children and how do you go about teaching them these? That is very interesting to me. We never know what perdictament we may find ourselves in and it is good for our children to know these things. That's a good idea that use of the computer is limited. When our daughter gets older it will be the same for her. There's a lot of useful knowledge on the internet but many dangers as well.

Since my little one is still 4 years old, our favorite recreation is PLAYTIME! Just anything we can think of. she loves art the most - watercolor, cutting paper, coloring, drawing etc. I play with my 4 year-old daughter because I am a simple housewife and an unemployed nurse.lol she also loves movies, but I discourage her from watching too much TV. But our best family time is - maybe a stroll in the mall or in the park. And getting to taste FOOD that we haven't taste yet. I want my kid to try some of the new stuff in town. I realized lately that she loves pizza and donuts!

That really sounds like so much fun. I'm looking forward to the time when my daughter reaches that age and enjoys doing these types of activities. It will be so enjoyable to doing these things with her. I'm sure that your daughter enjoys tasting the many different foods. Food really is wonderful and the many different varieties she will love.

Your doing great with your kid! Yes, I agree with you. It's also healthy enjoying outdoors with your daughter and not the indoor and video games. She will appreciate mother nature more now that she's exposed to it. We as a family usually go outdoors too. It's more educational and fun seeing live animals and different kind of plants in our mini forest here in our place.

Thanks so much, I'm trying :). It takes creativity and forethought when we want to quality time with our children. TV, video games is an easy thing. A lot of the time people just plop their kids in front of the tv and that's that. I really want my daughter to love being outdoors. And I think we are doing a good job of that. She looks to be outside and look at the leaves blowing in the trees. It's something that she is greatly enjoying. She can sit outside for quite awhile and enjoy it without getting fussy. I'm so happy about that. With time there will be great things that I want her and I to do together. One thing I look forward to is helping out at animal shelters with her. There are a few in our area that need help and I want us to be able to go there and help. Helping her to see the need to use her time to help people and animals, that it is a great thing to do. To care for and develop relationships with others.

I had 5 children and since I was a work at home mom weekends were outside time I am originally from Missouri so we would go to Meramac Caverns as the Meramac River ran alongside the cave. The kids loved to play in the water as it seemed more like a spring and they could see into the water. While we did theme parks when we could afford to with them, we did zoos, Grants Farm, Purina Farms things that were free. I took my children to learn history at various sites. Cahokia Mounds were right across the state line in Illinois. We also went up to Hannibal, Missouri. As they got older we got our first boat it was a 15ft. We enjoyed weekends out on a sand bar with hotdogs, and sodas and chips. the kids always had plenty of water to play in. When we bought a larger boat 2155ft boat, we had areas for everyone to sleep and even a fridge we could use at the dock no generator on this size boat. We then traded up to a 2855 boat, so we had air condition as long as we were at the dock over the weekend. Our final boat as our childen grew was a 41ft houseboat. It was wonderful most like a trailer on water. Had all nescessities of living onboard. I know what you are thinking we are rich. No, we carefully watched and spent the same 10,000 on each boat. Even the 41 ft boat was only 10,000 while we bought older boats all were fiberglass not wood and we waited for the right deal so we would have fun and not be sinking money into it. We had our boat sitting on Lake of the Ozarks. So we did weekend trips, week trips during summer, sometimes I would go with the kids for a week if hubby was working, and a few times we even went down for Christmas after a snow it was beautiful so see the snow on the trees and surrounding woods while we relaxed on our boat by ourselves. During summer everyone on the docks would cook something and we just always had pot luck on the docks plenty to eat and share with others. My children grew up pretty well rounded out doing things other than sit at home and watch TV or later just sit on the computer. As they say there was no dust under our kids or our feet.

Thanks for best response. I ran my own business out of the house so I could be with my children. Those kids learned early in life the value of a dollar. I did ceramics and used to have samples laying around. Mothers Day was coming, and the kids come down one day and said mom can we go to six flags? I said well I tell you what. You sell some of the ceramic samples I have and if you make 50.00 I will match it and take you guys. OMG! They grabbed every finished imaginable piece they could find in my workshop. They not only sold but brought back orders. Of course this was when children were allowed to do things, you know now everyone needs a license for everything through the cities. Those two kids come home within 3 hours with over 100.00 I asked them what did you say? They both chimed they rang the door bell Person answered They showed the box of ceramics and said WILL YOU PLEASE buy one of these? My mom told us if we sell some she will take us to 6 flags! And the neighbors around the whole subdivision loved their honesty and I can't begin to think who did not buy from them LOL Just begin by saving a little bit. if you REALLY want to have a fun vacation, not sure where you live, Carnival cruise ships have some boats port out for 3 to 5 day trips for as little as 200.00 the first two are full price and the rest in the room are 1/2 price. Food and swimming pools, arts and crafts for kids their own play area and they get to see different places. I go through vacationstogo.com for my cruises. I took my son on a 7 day cruise to Mexico with my best friend from Canada. He loved that cruise he was half price so it made it easy to pay his part. My husband and I are going on one in December. Check into it. if you book far enough ahead, you can gradually pay for it. Thats how we go. We put the deposit down to get our room then make payments to pay it off before the ship even leaves port.

That is so funny that they were able to sell a lot of ceramics. They really wanted to go. I do wish things were like they use to be like you had mentioned with being able to sell like your kids had. Now everything has so much red tape. Thanks so much about the idea about the cruises. I have never been on a cruise before but I will start saving for one. I have heard wonderful things about them. I will make a note of vacationstogo as well. I never thought that it would be possible to just pay the deposit and then pay the rest over time. That would be so much easier than trying to have all the money up front. This has been so helpful. I'm so excited for you and your husband. You both will have so much fun. Only a few more months and you both will be on a great vacation. It really is nice to be able to get away for a little bit. If I don't get to talk to you before then have a great trip!

That is really wonderful! Your children were so fortunate to be able to have such a wonderful upbringing. The many experiences that you and your family have had with being on your various boats i'm sure are treasures you have. I agree with you that the things your children experienced is so much better than sitting at home watching tv or being on the computer. I want my children to be able to experience these type of things. Being able to other enjoyable recreation besides watching tv. I think that television tends to be so common for children because it's an easy recreation. It doesn't cost a whole lot and people don't have to go anywhere. All that really has to be done is pushing a button. I tend to work hard and save so that my children are able to enjoy various activities.

My family likes being outdoors. We visit parks, canoe, hike and geocache. I am thankful my son isn't that into video games. He would rather be outside more than anything. I almost forgot we also enjoy going to the library and flea markets.

Being outdoors really is enjoyable. And for the most part it doesn't cost that much unless you go somewhere that's more expensive. I love to go the library and I'm sure that as my daughter gets older she will enjoy going there as well. I read to her quit a bit and so i'm sure she will love books. I actually have never been to a flea market I will have to add this on my list of things for us to do. Thank you for sharing your family's recreational activities with me.

Maybe my recreation is not wholesome enough. In weekends,I often with my mother go to supermarket to buy something, maybe we will cook a delicious dinner for us,maybe we will go to mall. Just like you say, today's recreation often not wholesome. In cool days,we will go to park, see beautiful flowers. But it's not often.

That sounds really nice. Having a nice meal with your mom, or going to the park. It can be difficult though to do these things. It is really so easy to just want to lounge on the cough with a movie. I like to watch movies it's just depressing that so many things that could be a descent movie turn out bad. And so I don't want my daughter to feel like that all there is to do is watch tv or surf the net. So I've got to set the right example for her by my actions and the things that I do. Thanks so much for sharing.
