My cat's "accidents" have stopped...simple solution?

So, a long long time ago I made a discussion about my cat not using the litterbox. She would always poo in the box, but she would only occasionally pee in it (usually she peed on my bedroom carpet, sometimes right next to the box). So how did I stop this bad bad habit? I moved the litterbox to my bathroom floor (which is tile). I didn't know if it would work, but I thought I didn't have anything to lose. And it seems to have worked! She pees in it everyday now, so I assume there are no more accidents on my carpet. But I don't understand WHY this would work...why would it matter if my litterbox is on carper or tile (when the 2 spots are only a few feet away from eachother)? Any ideas?

I used to have a cat and it usually goes out to do its business outside in the sand. I think the cats naturally do their business in the sand by digging the sand and doing their stuff then burying it afterwards. Probably you cat thought the cat is similar to sand and that was why it was doing it there. May be by putting the litter box on the tile floor, the cat could tell the difference between the solid floor and the sand.

That is a nice thing you did for the cat. There may be something scaring it outside.

My cat - My beautiful cat, Sweet Pea
I think my cat just remembers when she was outside last time (before coming to me) she didn't do well. When I found her she was super skinny (I could see her ribs and her spine)...i think the vet said she was under a pound and about 2 years old. And her hair was really bad, she was bald in some spots, and had little tuffs of hair in others. Here's a picture of her now, you can see she is no longer the sickly cat I found almost 5 years ago!

That is really a good thing you did for this cat. I am sure she is very grateful to you. It must have been really a bad experience for it that it doesn't want to go back out there.

I don't know but my guess would be that with carpet they hold so many smells that your cat can smell and you can not. Plus it holds tons of dust and dirt that really does not come up when you vacuum. Your cat can smell this too. Also some other cat may have used the carpet or the dog and the cat knows this as well so it is a carried on experience. When you moved the box to the area with no carpet the cat does not smell anything but the litter box and knows exactly where to go now.

lol, you may be right or she just does as she wishes as many cats do. But she does know what her box is for and it's no longer on the carpet. I can tell you I had a cat one time that I had to have 2 boxes, she did not want to pee in the one that had poop in it and vise versa. So either I had to clean the box each time she went or put her out 2 boxes which I did. She hated a dirty box, period. She was the dainty, clean lady of the house. Her sister was a tomboy and didn't care either way.

I clean the box everytime there's something in it. There's usually only one thing at a time, whether its pee or poop. I don't know if she wouldn't use it if there was something in it, but I really don't want to give her another excuse to not use it! lol

That would all be good reasons...but no other animal ever had accidents on my carpet before her. Also, she has to walk by part of the smelly carpet to get to the litter box now, but she doesn't stop there to pee, she goes on to the litter box. My family and I are convinced my cat might have some mental issues going on, lol. We have some weirdo animals.

It might not be the carpet vs the tile, it might be the location. Cats like to be able to see what's coming and have a way to get away from it. But who really knows what goes on in the minds of cats?

That sounds like it would be a plausible explanation, but the new location of the litter box is tighter and allows her to see less around her. And she usually potties with her face toward the wall, back to my room.

LoL, who can explain a cat LOL, I have two and one is big old tom and he is too big to fit in a regular litter box and he would put his front paws on the edge of the litter box and hang on for dear life ! Or,so it seemed to me ! But, he got a little lazy in his old age and started to just pee or poop over the edge........what I couldn't understand was why didn't he put his front half on the floor and just pee or poop in the litter box.....? It's really funny too cuz he'd try his best to cover it up with his paws scraping the floor with nothing LOL.........we always got a big kick out of him til I bought the new bigger box. I bought a BIG , plastic storage box that is tall and wide......he now has to pee or poop on the inside of the box........it might be on the SIDES, but the stuff is IN The box now ! Ok, so I have to clean more LOL As to your cat, I would say that the odor she made herself in that spot is what she thought was her rightful place to go. Tile? well,LOL, alls I know is she doesn't like the feel of the tile when she would try to cover her mess up as opposed to the soft carpet.........I really don't know............but do give her credit for going in the litter box in the bathroom NOW............. I have to say, this is one conversation I never thought I'd have the pleasure of grinning about :) Hugs, quita

Wow! He must be a big boy if he can't fit in a normal litter box! lol I'm glad you were able to make him his own big litter box! It's funny you mentioned you cat trying to "bury" his potty with the floor...lol. My cat can't bury her potties. She paws the edge of the litter box (I think she thinks she is bury it) and then leaves it. Then my other cat will come in after her and bury it for her! He's so proper. lol

While dogs are loyal to man, that's why dogs are considered as man's bestfriend, cats on the other hand is loyal to a place. I guess you know what i mean.

That's great! Maybe your cat thought you all should do it together or something, or it's the bathroom smell that also inspire him/her to go there. I rescued so many cats, sometimes they do out of the litter box...I don't know the solution but in here I can't keep the toilet opened. But I love all of them, no matter what, hahaha. My sons and daughters.

Well, the litter box isn't actually right in the bathroom, it's in my...sink area, which is seperate. lol. But you might be right. Why can't you keep the toilet open?? Do the cats drink out of it. That's great that you rescue cats! They need it more than any animal!
