Judging people that drink Diet Coke with their Big Mac's.

We went to McDonald's today with some friends and although they were just joking about, they made fun of me getting a diet coke with my Big Mac. I was not offended, as they were my friends (and I made fun of them with something else), but I've always heard stories about this being a 'weird' thing. Plus, I actually got one of those emails going around about some weird things that people do. Like having the prescription section for sick people being at the back of a grocery store, while cigarette sections are at the till; or people having their expensive cars out in the driveway while their junk is inside the garage, etc. This big mac and diet coke combination was one of those 'weird' things that people just do. For me, I am actually not trying to be healthy, or in a diet. I just like the diet coke because it isn't as sweet as the regular coke. So, have you found this weird too? Have you seen not-so-healthy people get a diet coke with their way-too-much-food? Have you judged these people quickly?

The moment they make fun of me for eating What I like , the friendship is over and I wish them ill until the day I die. I never thought about the Big Mac- diet coke thing. When I read your post I first thought that you were saving the calories for the burger. But once I read that it is your palette and not a diet I totally understand. and any friend who can't can take a flying F@ck at a rolling donut! Sorry. Once I know someone I like is being teased I go into gangster mode.

It was OK Sarah! My friends can laugh about my food choices, because I get back at them with even worst remarks! You should have heard what I said about my friend's 'stach, and what makes for a face that grew around his 'stach! But thanks! I appreciate friends that look out for each other.

I don't find this strange at all and definitely wouldn't judge someone drinking Diet and eating a Big Mac. I might judge them for eating the Big Mac, though, as I'm not a McD fan at all. What people eat and drink is their own business, really. By the way, I'm a server and I hear coworkers make fun of guests for lots of things and I try not to go down that road with them.

Oh you're at the frontlines! I'm glad that you don't go down that road. Even though it is so easy, what people eat is still their own business. Funny you would mention about not being a McD fan, as I am not too. But with two kids who love the fries and the nuggets, I'm always outvoted. Thanks for the response.

It's hard not to judge certain types of people. I know it's wrong, but I can be judgemental at times. I don't necessarily judge someone who drinks a diet soda with a big mac.. but I will judge a big fat person who orders tons of fatty foods. There's a girl who occasionally works in my store who is definitely very overweight and everytime she works she comes in with a large grocery bag full of candy and munches on it all day long. It's really difficult not to judge people like that.

I think when she does that, then she is just calling judgement on her self. Maybe for some of us who can exercise self control, then we can let it pass. But I know it could be harder for others, even me. Thanks.

Yes, people do think that it is weird as a person is consuming so many calories and then appear to order a diet coke as if this somehow makes up for the abundance of calories. Actually, I do the same thing for the same reason but I do not order a big mac but a junior one. However, my every new SIL called me last week and told me that diet drinks can actually increase weight and I do have a weight problem as I am a stress eater but the wedding is over now. He is a marketing manager with Pepsi. So now I am drinking water but do miss my diet coke or pepsi

I think for a healthy person, drinking diet coke with their big macs and large fries would be a bit weird, but I think I appreciate Hatley's point of view up there. Something which some of us might not have considered, that for diabetics it is a must to get the diet pop/soda, even if we do have the way-too-much-food that goes with it. Thanks guys!

Ha ha I know what you mean. This is like when I go to Taco Bell, get 2 cheesy burritos and a Diet Pepsi with it. People associate "diet" soda with people who are actually on a diet, whereas some people just like the taste of diet coke, and like you said, don't like to consume a lot of sugar. I can see why you might be made fun of but I don't really judge people on it. I'm horrible with fast food so I have no reason to judge anyone else lol.

It's already past 2pm here, and I haven't had lunch yet. You just made me crave for a Taco Bell cheesy burrito! I guess when people come into a fast food joint, everybody is more-or-less guilty of eating something not-too-healthy. So there shouldn't be any judgement being passed while in there. Thanks maezee!

last year (my senior year) i was an aid for my chemistry theacher she was cool she always got resse's a cheeseburger and a diet coke. Yes she was larger. Here's my deal it's okay if you are just playfully kidding but people should not judge so much just my opinion. I also like diet pop sometimes

It goes to show that judging people at first sight isn't really right. That even if they look 'larger', they actually have their own personalities. And some could even be considered 'cool' too! Thanks!

I think it's quite normal as it's a very popular product. I've seen people eat high calorie foods with diet sodas I've also seen people live on next to nothing and guzzle diet soda like it was water. But I understand what you are saying about it being paired with something not so healthy, though neither of them are very good for you in the first place.

I admit that I guzzle at diet sodas (diet coke)! And I know it isn't good for me, even the Big Mac. Once in a while I do crave for the fast food, but the diet coke is a staple for me. It comes with anything I eat. Thanks for the response.

Absolutely I have! Unfortunately I think many people don't realise quite how fattening the burgers etc are, but most realise that coke is just a cup of sugar with flavourings and colourings. Personally I prefer diet coke to 'fat' coke so I'll choose it if I had only these two drinks to choose from, but they're both down my list of things i'd like to drink.

The fact that it is a 'fat' coke is not even on my radar. I just dislike it because it is just far too sweet. Add it to a fattening burger, and it is an unhealthy combination. Thanks GreenMoo!

I can understand why people find this weird and in essence it is a little weird, but as you say somme people do like the diet coke better then the regular coke, and it's not nessessarily for diet. Anyway weird or not weird everyone should just keep on doing what they like best, even if some people find it weird.

Hello kalinka1. I agree that people should just continue what they're doing, weird or not, because other people don't have the right to judge others. Thanks.

I hate the taste of Diet Coke, so there's no way I would order one, with a Big mac or without it I know many people always order it because they prefer its taste, but many other people think that they will automatically not get fat when they go to Mac Donalds if they order a Diet coke. I have heard so many times "I will order a Diet Coke, I want to lose weight". That's why people think it's ridiculous. I think it's absolutely ridiculous in that situation too, but not if it's just because you like the taste.

I think some people have the misconception that diet coke is a wonder drink that helps to loose wait. Or a counter drink to the way-too-much-food that they order along with it. I agree that makes it ridiculous! Thanks.

Well there is some irony to your order, but having a choice is a great thing. I'm not one to judge people for their food choices. Well, maybe I'm concerned. For the most part, I tend to envy people who ordered the thing I wanted when I didn't.

Hello redmaryjane. I think I failed to see what you saw, which is having a choice in the matter. I think people can pick whatever they want, and shouldn't be judge about it. Thanks for the response.

Yes some people do odd things and as a teenager I worked at a Burger king and found it bizarre to see some customers order huge orders and their diet cokes. I was actually told by some that they drink the diet coke because they are diabetics and the regular colas were restricted. My boyfriends female family members on the other hand out in Arkansas drink loads of it and they are not diabetic. I don't quite understand why they drink it, as they are always dieting, let alone so much of it. I witnessed on a daily basis, two specific ladies drinking up to 8 cans a day. I have not outwardly judge, I just don't think they should drink so much of it. Reason why I never said anything is that I figured they were adults and should know better. Plus people get offended too.

I consider myself a diet coke addict, but I am nowhere near 8 cans a day! Even when I wasn't minimizing my soda intake. That's just way too much. I think it is counterproductive specially when one is dieting. But like you said, people get offended, so a lot keep their mouth shut. Thanks HWG!

I think your behavior is normal,if you choose coke with Big Mac it will increase your body burden. So diet coke is OK!!! You say the weird thing,I often see some pretty young lady, they wore very beautiful, some of them drive car,but they often like eat street food. I think it's weird.

Hello hoonwenting. Yes, I've seen people like that. People who scrimp on the food that they eat, so just they could afford their expensive cars. Thanks.

i do think it can look odd but mainly as im thinking selfish and dont like diet coke. but if you gonna have a mcdonalds ya may aswell have the works and think im havin a fat day leave me alone! some people do seem to fell better if they have a diet coke as it has the diet word in it. this actually makes me feel like one now! yummy :)

Hello libby1910. I would agree that going to McDonald's might as well deserve 'the works'. And nobody could make me feel weird or bad about it. As a personal choice though, I'd rather have a Diet Coke, not because of the word 'Diet', but because it isn't as sweet as the regular one. Thanks and welcome to myLot!

hi bounce I used to do that a lot as for one thing the ordinary sweetened coke has a ton of sugar in it much worse then the combo of hamburger and fries. I am a diabetic and I can handle a hamburger and fries but if I were to have an ordinary coke I would in all probability keel over in a coma from high blood sugar. the protein in the hamburger sort of helps to combat the carbs in the bu n and fries so I never have any problems with that but always have a diet coke. so I never make fun of other s who have a diet coke with their order of other things.

Hi Hatley. Thanks for the perspective. Some people just don't see a diabetic's point of view. Sometimes all they see is somebody getting way-too-much-food, and then compensate it with a diet coke. Thanks.

I drink diet coke when ordering in fast food restaurants because I figure every calorie saved is a weight blessing. If I'm already consuming 1,000 calories, why not stop it at that and not add another 300 calories from soda. One should cut calories everywhere one can.

I think if you are always conscious about how much calories your are getting, then I think there is no issue with the combination. Even if you get a double big mac and a large fries, I'm sure that it isn't everyday that you do that. Thanks for dropping by.

I don't find it strange somehow. Eating really depends on the persons body. Maybe doing that may help him reduce sugar consumption without giving up on something. I don't really judge those people doing that. It is always their right to do so.

Hello zerd87. You're exactly right that we don't have the right to judge anybody, on what they eat. But I guess some health conscious people make it as if this is weird. Thanks for responding.

I usually order diet cokes and Big Macs too. For me, I just like drinking diet coke. When I drink coke, there is usually a weird aftertaste or feeling that remains. I know soda really isn't beneficial to your body at all, but I just have to have it, and why not make it 0 calories? Drinking soda is a habit I have to break haha. Anyways, I don't really judge people on what they eat. Food is something for people to enjoy having. If they enjoy it, then let them enjoy it.

It may be a health thing, it being zero calories, but just like you, it is also a 'taste' thing for me. Regular coke is much too sweet, and it does have that weird aftertastes. Thanks for dropping by scjbxz!
