Do you like to write letters to your friends?

Yesterday I visited a site where people can find new mailfriends. Most people wanted to exchange emails, but there were a couple of ads from people who were looking for snail mail penpals. One women wrote that she only wanted to send and receive handwritten snail mail letters. That made me think about the past, because I used to have lots of snail mail penpals from around the world. Today I only send handwritten mail at christmas, the rest of the year I use emails. Do you still send and receive handwritten snail mail letters to your friends? If you were looking for a penfriend would you prefer an online friendship or a snail mail friendship? Why?

Hi! Technology has changed so fast that hand written letters or say snail mail has taken back seat. I used to send hard written letters in the past but I have longed stopped that. No doubt hand written letters have its own charm and they just can not be compared with emails. However, now a days emails have emerged as a faster option so I rely on mails. I have preserved few old hand written letters written by dear friends and I enjoy reading them occasionally.

HI Por! It is interesting to hear that you retain old hand written letters and cherish those older memories. Though emails is faster but it is lacking the human touch, which was there in the hand written letters. Nice to meet you. dpk PS - Have sent you a PM, please check.

Today I hardly ever receive a handwritten letter, so want to keep my old letters as memories from the past. It is a little strange to think about. I used to send so many handwritten letters to my friends and at that time I thought that I would continue to write that kind of letters, but when I started using the internet that all changed. Today I only write emails.

I also keep some of the old handwritten letters that I have received from my friends. Today I don't receive handwritten letters, and I don't send handwritten snail mail letters to my friends either. It is a lot faster and easier to write an email and I choose to do that instead of sending a letter by mail. I had many penpals when I was a teenager and we always sent eachother handwritten letters, but times have changed and today we have ways of communication that didn't exist at that time like the internet.

yes but now was not that because you go forth to the different gadgets for modern times. Then i don not remember the cellphone corresponding trend we still friends and you're my pen pal, but now do not need to write first trends that Facebook, twitter and other gadgets, you cannot communicate with online and call the cellphone, because in the modern times we can talk to people and other areas, or outside the country especially those who have been part of our lives.

Today the forms of communication have changed a lot. When I was a child there were no internet and no cellphones. Landlines, snail mail letters and personal interaction were the only options at that time, and I really enjoyed exchanging snail mail letters with my penpals. If I had been young today I think that I would have chosen contact through the internet instead, because it is easier and faster especially if you want to contact a person who lives in a different part of the world.

I had started to write and exchange letters with my pen-pals throughout the world since when i was a teenager. I got introduced to this hobby by one of my classmates. We always exchange news regarding our pen-pals when it was recess time in school. Although i need to wait very long for the snail mails to arrive into my hands but i am happy and feel special about them. I even had kept all those letters which contained interesting news and pictures from my pen-pals. Not forgetting, i had exchange a lots of postage stamps and currencies from my pen-pals through the world. Now, i only exchange news with them through emails since we feels it is faster and easier. But, i still feel exchange news through snail mails is the best and the most special way.

Your description of your penpals made me think about the way that I got my first penpal. My classmates and I also discussed our penpals. One of our teachers was friends with a teacher from Ireland and that teacher gave my teacher some letters from her students who were looking for penpals. That way I got in touch with my first penpal and we were penpals for seversl years. My penpals and I also exchanged currencies sometimes, and we sent eachother postcards, photos and small gifts. When I started using the internet I wrote a combination of snail mail letters and emails, but today I usually send emails. Birthdaycards and christmas card I still send via snail mail, but I don't send long handwritten letters anymore.

Wow, the way you getting your first pen-pl sounds very interesting. As for me, i got my first pen-pal through one of my local magazine. But pity to say, now that magazine is not available anymore. It is very interesting experience, right...

I don't do it very often, but I do still do it ... mostly it is with my mom. She has absolutely no interest in the computer (and probably couldn't pry my dad off of it even if she was interested), so we sometimes write letters to each other. Of course, we also talk on the phone, but the hand-written message in the mail is just extra special for some reason. I must admit that she does it more often than I do, but I still do it once in a while.

I think that is great. When I was living abroad my mother and I also wrote letters to eachother and I still keep some of her old letters. Now we live in the same country and we call eachother instead of writing letters to eachother. My mother likes to write letters, but she is busy with work and other things and she doesn't have the time to write letters.

Yes, I keep the letters that my mom sends me as well. My husband and I also wrote letters to each other when we were separated for many months ... we were not separated as in arguing but rather family issues forced us to be in different states for many months. We talked on the phone every day, but we also wrote letters to each other. It was a way for us to stay connected when we were so far apart.

Just like you i send handwritten cards only on occasions. Most of the time, i email my friends. Would you believe that i would email them even if they haven't emailed back for 2x. But more than 2x, i would stop. I have this habit : if you don't like me, i don't like you either.

I have the same habit. I contact people again if they don't reply and sometimes I discover that there is a reason why I haven't heard from them. In some cases they didn't receive my message and in some cases they aren't feeling well or they have been really busy. I think it is fine to write again if you don't get a reply, but like you I don't want to keep on writing to them if they still don't reply. I write them one of two times and then I stop, because if I still don't hear from them, I see it as a sign that they aren't interested in keeping in touch with me.

Snail letters are letters that the postman delivers. I think it is called snail mail because it is a slow way to send and receive letters compared to emails. When I was a teenager snail mail letters were the only option because that was before the internet was available. At that time I had snail mail penpals from all over the world and we exchanged letters about our lives, our cultures and countries etc.

oh I get it know.even if it was slow, you will be so exited to get there reply and it won't come too quickly like emails, you will have to wait.

Not any more. I think it is almost ten year before that i write and send snail letters to friends and family members, with the popularization of phone, and chat tools online, it is no use at all. Though sometimes i miss the snail letter a lot, because i think it is more lovely and filled with love and friendship. Much warmer than emails.

I also miss the handwritten letter sometimes. It was a great feeling to find a handwritten letter from a friend in the mailbox In the past I sent and received a lot of snail mail letters, because I had penfriends from my own country as well as penfriends from other countries. I loved to exchange news, experiences, photos, postcards and lots of other things with my friends. Today I write emails and chat with my friends on the internet instead of sending them handwritten letters. There are still people who exchange handwritten snail mail letters, but I am not one of them, I use my computer and my cellphone instead.

I remember I like collecting letters before. That's why I also make pen pals with some people online. I want to receive a lot of letters. Maybe that woman likes collecting letters too and miss that thing. Maybe she kinda old and likes opening envelops and read letters than read letters from email. Or maybe can't sit long in front of the computer because she has eye problem. Sometime I don't want to read long article on the computer because it my eye hurt too.

I also collected letters in past. I still have some of them and I keep them in some boxes in the storage room. When I look at them I think about the past, because I have lost touch with most of those people. It is a little sad to think about, but the letters remind me of a happy period in my life, and I still remember how excited I was when I received a new letter. Sometimes I have the same problem as you if I spend many hours in front of my computer. It effects my eyes sometimes, when that happens I spend some time away from the computer.

That is true, it is a different feeling to receive a snail mail letter. I used to receive a lot of snail mail letters, and when I picked up the mail I was always excited to see if there was a letter from one of my friends. I shared a lot of things with my penpals and I got to know them quite well because we kept in touch for several years.

Personally speaking, I seldom write letters to others, including handwritten mails and emails. If I wanna communicate with my friends, I usually talk with them by mobile phone or contact them by IM software such as MSN or QQ, which I think is more convenient than letters. I admit that receiving a handwritten mail will make people feel very happy. But you know people could always find a lot of reasons why they don't write a letter.

I also use my mobile phone and MSN, and it is a fast and easy way to communicate with my friends, but I also like to write long emails when I have some free time. In the past I wrote lots of snail mail letter to my friends, but those days are gone, and today I hardly ever write a snail mail letter. I think it is easier and cheaper to write an email. Emails aren't as personal as a handwritten letter in your mailbox, but in many ways I find it more convenient to write emails.

Placed among a letter I put, every time, emotion words uttered did not know to say. Maybe a strange timidity in writing that only made me a stamped envelope to know my beautiful feelings which lie waiting to answer them. Sure everything in an envelope. Most times it did not happen and then I dropped the traditional letters and I am back in my mind and I just talked to myself, in lines written in a journal, not so strict with my life. Computerization of this century, I submitted and I signed in different places ideas that they wanted released from the tight space of my mind. Left of the key thoughts not my own as the answer was not necessarily expected, what I had said, I said.

Letters can be a great way to express yourself or express things that are difficult to say. I used to write many letters to my friends and penfriends, but I also gave up the traditional letters, and I don't really write letters by hand anymore. Today I usually write emails instead of traditional letters. I use my computer a lot and it has become easier for me to communicate with my friends rhat way, but sometimes I miss the handwritten letters.

I understand what you mean. I don't send and receive handwritten letters anymore, but I still keep the old letters that I have received and I read them sometimes. It is nice to read the old letters again and it is different from writing and receiving emails. I write many emails and it is a very easy and convenient way to communicate, but they don't beat the handwritten letters.

I also had snail mail penpals before but not anymore. Everything is going through emails and social networking sites. Snail mails are exciting, you never know when you're going to receive a letter. You can be more creative in it cause you can draw on the paper or so. It can become more personalized than the ones on email. I also love the scent of stationery that's why i prefer snail mails :)

When I was in high school I had pen pals in many parts of the world, and we didn't have computers then. I also wrote to anyone I knew that I didn't see very often. This continued when I was in college and away from home, and the letters got longer. We had no computers back then. I still have most of those letters and cards I exchanged with my friends over40 years ago . When I graduated, we still had no computers, and I often wrote long letters of several pages to special friends, even some who lived close by whom I saw often. This was because it's sometimes easier to write important things than to say them. Sometmes during a deep discussion you don't have a good response until you have stopped talking and gone home. A letter was the perfect way to make a response in that case. I also always sent birthday and Christmas cards with personal notes. All that changed when we got computers. Christmas cards changed to printed Christmas letters and often were the only snail mail I continued to send except for birthday cards to very special friends. Now, except for a few friends who refuse to use email, I keep in touch on Facebook or with emails. But I still love getting personal snail mail. I'm older now and it's hard to do handwriting neatly, so if I send cards by snail mail, I still print a separate letter to enclose instead of writing it out. I hand address the envelopes, and try to put interesting stamps on the envelopes. I send hand-written notes if a friend has lost a loved one or if special friends have birthdays. What I miss about snail mail communication is having new letters I can later read over and over. I keep personal emails filed on my computer and sometimes read them over, but it's not the same. One pen pal from Sweden used to draw pictures on his letters or write letters on the back of his pictures. It was always so much fun to receive his letters for that reason. I do not send e-cards. I find they are just too impersonal. If someone is just a casual friend, I use Facebook to send such greetings. If I know someone really well, I send a birthday card with a long letter. I think it still means a lot to a person to get hand-addressed personal mail instead of just junk mail and the bills. Though I don't live for the mail delivery like I used to, I still get excited when I see a friend's return address on an envelope. I think most people do. It's a sign of special caring just because hardly anyone does send snail mail these days.

Thank you for your detailed response and welcome to MyLot When I was a teenager online communication wasn't possible either. I had many penpals from around the world and we shared a lot of things in our letters. I usually wrote very long letters to my penpals and I really enjoy writing and receiving letters. One of my penpals and I stayed in touch for 11 years. You wrote that the situation changed when you got computers, I have experienced the same thing. Today I have a computer and I have access to the internet. I still send my friends handwritten christmas cards and birthday cards, but the rest of the time I usually write emails instead of snail mail letters. When I was younger I received a lot of snail mail letters from my penpals and I was always very happy when I opened the mailbox and found a letter from one of my friends. Today it isn't that interesting to open the mailbox, because it is usually full of junk and bills I still like to write and receive letters, but today my friends and I exchange emails instead of snail mail.

I haven't written a snail mail letter in years. When my cousin and I were teenagers we used to write each other since we didn't get to see each other often. Then a few years ago we started writing since she moved across the country. We only wrote a few times and then we got busy and forgot about it. I've looked at pen pal sites a few times but didn't really find any that jumped out at me as being good. I think I'd rather do an email penpal then a snail mail penpal. At I'm on the computer a lot anyways. Plus it's free to email, verses the prices of stamps that keep going up. Plus there are a lot of crazies out there, I don't really want them knowing my home address.

When I was a teenager I also wrote letters to some of the family members that I didn't see very often. My father's cousin had a daughter who lived on an island in another part of the country and we exchanged snail mail letters sometimes. I agree with you about the advantages of emails. I use my computer a lot and it is very convenient to write emails since I am already spend time in front of the computer. It is also less expensive to send emails. In the past the price of a stamp was about 5 kr (about one dollar) and today it is almost 10 kr (two dollars)

That is true, when we want to send handwritten letters we have to go to the post office while it is open. When we send an email we are able to do it any time of the day so we are more independent that way and I think that is nice. I like to send handwritten cards and letters at christmas, but if I had to send a handwritten letter every time I wanted to get in touch with my friends, it would be quite expensive because the stamps in my country have become much more expensive than they were in the past.

I can still remember those days when we send my dad snail mails every two days. I was small then and he is working abroad. Cellphones are still those HUGE models and internet chat was not known yet. I admit now after the internet and emails known, my dad is still working abroad but we don't write him snail mails anymore. The fastest way of communication is through email and the cheapest way to call and talk to each other is through Skype. But when it comes to my friends who are all over the world right now, I still send them greeting cards and postcards. I don't plan having pen friends, I don't think I can befriend a total stranger through letters... I find it not easy to trust people online...

Hello there. Way back when I was in high school, I used to write letters to my best friend. I just enjoy writing on my cute stationary so every-time I miss her, I just express it by writing a letter to her. Even though we are seeing each other during our breaks, We still fond of writing letters to each others. Actually even now, when my friends were about to celebrate their birthdays, I just send them letters to great them and I send it via post office. I know that we are living in a modern world nowadays. Most of us do not use to do this thing because of cellphones. But for me, I will still do the same thing as what I did in the past.:-P

When my friends celebrate their birthdays I also like to send them letters or birthday cards via snail mail.
