Asking for a raise

I just got a promotion and the raise that came along with it. My boss gave me the biggest raise that he was able to approve. He told me I would have to talk to his boss if I wanted a bigger raise. Well, I just got my first paycheck with my new raise on it and while it is over $125 a paycheck increase it is not really enough now that I am only working one job. My boss(yes the one I fight with constantly) was pushing me today to ask HIS boss to give me a bigger raise. He thinks that I am worth more than I am getting, but I have to go above him. My problem here is not knowing how to go about asking for a raise. I need some advice. Have you ever asked for a raise? How did you go about doing so?

Nope, I just sort of keep my head down and go with the flow. I've gotten one raise already, though not much of one. Our assistant manager plans on leaving in mid-October and I've toyed with the idea of getting a promotion. But since my hours are limited I think that's probably a long shot. Plus I know I don't want to stay there much longer. I'd love to try to find another job soon.

I have never asked for a raise before. I will get another raise in October anyway, but it kinda has me wondering about it. My boss seems convinced that his boss would give me a bigger one now.

I guess it couldn't hurt to try. It's not like they can fire you for asking for more $. I would just say "Hey, (Boss's Name) told me I should ask you for a bit more of a raise. I could really use it since I quit my other job and now devote all my time to this one, but I'm not quite making as much as I was. And you know I've got a couple kids to raise, bills to pay, etc. And I work really hard for you.." and point out some of the good you've done for their company like covering shifts, having open availability, any customer compliments or whatever.

I think it is embarrassing for you to go to require for a higher salary raise to your boss's head. As you will go beyond of your position to talk about this. Your boss shall talk with it for you or go to the PR department about this issue. A fair company shall have a fixed salary for each position. You don't have to fight for it, you shall be arranged well instead. It is like if you work in Microsoft, you go to ask for a higher paid and go to talk about it with Bill Gates. What will he think about it? He may not even know you. I love China

It would not be embarrassing for me. I actually get along with my bosses boss quite well. We have a good relationship. I just don't know how to word things well.

By good relationship I mean I can talk to him and joke around with him.

Here is my thoughts on this: Your direct report boss gave you a raise, but he is telling you that if you want a bigger raise, you should be asking from it from HIS boss. Well He also told you you deserve to get more than what they gave you... I think Your BOSS, if he thinks that way (truly thinks of you as deserving) HE COULD HAVE FOUGHT FOR YOUR RAISE HIMSELF. After all, he is your direct report, his recommendations and his rating of you should be a testament to that. I have managed people myself, and honestly He asking you to go directly is a bit ODD. He should be talking to his boss(technically your boss too) about the salary they gave you. Because if he wanted to, he could've fought for it himself. I have for my staff years back and even when i resigned, i made sure they got the raise before i left because there is no assurance they will get it IF I am not there anymore. So here, i do not understand what our boss is trying to make it look like to the top management.. why is he urging you to do that, in the first place.

He got me $40 more a paycheck than he should have given me. He had to ask permission for that much. I think he just didn't want to push it too much since it was more than everyone else gets when they get promoted to that level. I don't know. He was pushing me to talk to him again today at work.

Honestly, I've never asked for a raise. Like most we expect one when reviews come around provided we do a good job, are not tardy often, nor call-in to work. My hubby has a similar problem in a way, his boss pushed for him to get a raise but because he is topped out his boss won't approve it. So my hubby hasn't gotten a raise in 2yrs. He also can't just quit either he's got 20yrs on the job and the way the economy is he'd never find another job with the benefits and wages he makes.... though I had delt with a competitor of their's employees and they do make $5 more an hour but they loose plenty in that they are a union shop between dues and insurance. I just hope asking for more money will not backfire if you choose to do this. That would be my concern.

I know a few people who are capped out at the job they are in. Totally not fair.

Gosh, I never had such experience to ask for raise though. Mostly, my boss would tell us there will be a raise but base on your performance for the previous year. I hope that you can use your performance and your excellent job skill to convince your superior, that you are worth that bigger raise. Good Luck!

Actually I never have! Here it's almost time for me to retire and that's one thing I have never done....I hope you find a way to convince him that you deserve it...if you boss thinks you should have one...then go for it....point out all our good areas of expertise and that should help! Good luck!

Honestly if your boss really thinks you deserve more he should be going in and fighting for you. He is being a coward by making you do this yourself. I have never really heard of having to go over your bosses head to get a raise with your boss's blessing. If you must do it be sure to write down all of your duties and things that you handle. Also write down all of the things you have done really well recently like in the last year or two, awards you have won, or projects that you worked on that were highly successful so that when you go in you can say that you think you deserve a raise and here is why and present all of these good things you have done and do on a regular basis. Basically you have to sell yourself as a valuable asset to the company.

If your boss truly believe that you deserve more than that he should have worked it out in the first place because he is your immediate superior. It's kinda odd why your boss is pushing you to ask for a raise. It is his responsibility and he should work it out for you if he really believes that you deserve it. If not i don't think that he acts the way he's supposed to be.

I think the first time for getting a raise is we come to Lord Jesus for blessing us. Because all things in the world are in Lord's hand. And then after that, you do your best work as well as you. I believe you will get a raise.
