Bandh means a short general strike here in India. Today all shops, markets, banks, schools, colleges, offices are closed, no vehicles even bikes are not allowed to move on the streets, because of a bandh supporting Anna Hazare’s movement, who is demanding tougher laws against corruption in India. Kisan Baburao Hazare, popularly known as Anna Hazare. He says, "My Dear Countrymen, the second freedom struggle has begun. I have been arrested as well. Will this struggle stop with my arrest? Absolutely not. You should not let that happen". Well I don’t belong to any political party, but because of the ‘demand of tougher laws against corruption’; I support this issue. There was announcement in TV, Newspaper etc about this bandh. What give me pain are the closures of shops, markets, banks, schools, colleges, offices and no vehicles even bikes are allowed to move on the streets and . During bandhs the antisocial, hired by the political parties become active, they block roads by burning used tyres, wood etc, misbehave with persons, who has to move on the street , say going to hospital for treatment, to see someone who is ill. Today I was supposed to go to pay my ‘electric-bill’ (last day, to avail rebate), to the bank or ATM counter to draw money, but I couldn’t go. The daily wage earners, labors, masons, carpenters, rickshaw pullers lost their earning, though those working in office etc will get their salary. Is there ‘bandh’ in your place, how you feel, do you take them easily, lightly? I don’t because every month there is some kind of strike, initiated by political parties on petty issues. Please share if any and comment on this. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. .

Hello my friend Professor2010 Ji, So nice of you for your immediate and prompt positive comments. I grade Sri Annaji as 'GREATEST OF ALL GREATS.". He has started un-doing what Britishers dameged our country after Lord Macaualley's address on 02-Feb-1835 as below :- "www.indicohotels.com “I have travelled across the length and breadth of India I have not seen one person who is beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage and therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation.” Lord Macualays, address to the British Parliament on 2-2-1835. Thanks. May God bless You and have a great time.

I was in one strike back in 1976. I was just about ready to cross the lines and go back to work when the strike was over and we got most of what we wanted. Then our state went to a right to work state and most of the unions were broken. Sad. That was about thirty five years ago now.

I am against this movement. Obviously, I am not against corruption. Are all the supporters of Hazare corrupted free? Let me be specific. Are the businessmen paying taxes properly? (There are so many businessmen who are supporting the movement). Are the students taking money receipt from the tutor, to whom they are getting private tution? Are teachers showing this income to there total income. Are Lawyers giving money receipt to the clients? Are the riders obeying the traffic rules Anna has not announced that those are corrupted do not come and support my movement. So on, so on. The supporters might say we fighting against bigger corruption. But I am against the corruption. I think when I am indulge in any dishonesty I have no right to raise my hand against a corruption.

You are right in your view Sona Very few businessmen, teachers and professors who run coaching centres are honest. let me add the food stalls on road side, the haircutting saloons, the beauty parlors etc etc, earn lots, but never pay tax.. we need to start from grass root level.. pl read my PM Thanks for sharing Best of luck. heloo profsaheb, namaskar.Fortunately in Mumbai there has not been a bandh for a very long time,in fact i cannot recall when the last bandh took place at all.The bandhs used to take place quite frequently over 30 years back when the trade unins of Datta Samant, George Fernandes and Shiv Sena would call for them. Then everything would be thrown out of gear and life would become a misery for the citizens. However nowadays the political parties and trade unions have realized that nobody tolerates a bandh anymore so such things don`t take place here which is a good thing for us.

The company that my mother works for here in the states has many employees that are located in India and the general strikes that are experienced there from time to time place a great burden on those employees that are stateside because it puts a lot more work on them. She really gets fed up with it as well. Her supervisior has now set up sleeping areas in the office so that employees will not have to take off work when there is a planned strike that will be happening in India. I'm not sure what city they are located in.

Dear dorann Glad to know about the company where your mom works.. On days of strike the government and management of private offices 'close' the offices, institutions as a preventive measure.. there are incidents of burning of offices etc.. Thanks for sharing Best of luck. your views Professor

Hello Papa! Sorry to hear that you could not get the rebate due to the strike. Here we from time to time also have businesses and or causes that go on strike also to prover a point. It is very frustrating for the workers who loose out especially when they have unions they pay for to protect their rights. Sadly even though they are paying the unions so this sort of thing does not happen it does and sad because no earnings for a long time for them to buy food and or pay their bills. I remember once the schools when on strike for almost a month. Teachers do not earn during the summer, unless they divide their yearly check to flow throughout the summer too, which means their regular is less then also. So to be without the earnings they paid into during the summer months and then on strike is absolutely horrible for them. I wish no one had to face this problem as it is an issue for both the employers, employees and customers.

hi professor, i thought the anna you were talking of is a girl. here the most common of all strikes is the transport strike. group of drivers rally on designated places and shouts their grievances and tries to convince other drivers to join in. i say, most nationwide transport strikes could paralyze about 85 to 90 percent of the public transport and the riding public suffers. government tries to alleviate this by putting on buses so that the people could go home from work especially those who live in far places. it is an irritating situation especially when the people gets out of the office all at the same time. ann

I think not only you but also all of us are fade up with this ‘Bandh’ culture which was started by the leftists in West Bengal and is now popular everywhere in India. It is now high time for all of us to come forward to give an end to this bad practice of the political parties in India.

here there are also strikes because it is part of democracy and a way for people to express their grievances, but one thing you cannot force anybody to join a strike if they do not like, so for example there is a public transport strike, those who do not want to ply their route can do as they wish but no forcing or coercing those who do not want to join like stoning or putting spikes on the road for those who do not sympathize. If shops or public service close, that means they sympathize but no forcing. Burning tires on the road is illegal in our country and could get you arrested even during New year fireworks festivities.
