Grieving after loosing your animal friend.

Few days ago my mother called me and told me that her dog got bone cancer. And I know that soon we all would have to make this horrible decision to ... I can not even write it. I feel sad and depressed because I know this dog and I really love him. He is like a friend. But we can not allow him to suffer. If the illness will give him more pain and there will be no other alternative or treatment we should let him go to better place. More than 10 years ago my beloved sausage dog died of cancer. My grief after his dead was really great. Still I'm thinking about this amazing dog. I know that every living being dies sooner or later but is so difficult to let them go. Do you think grief after loosing your animal friend is something normal or maybe we should feel a shame that we are crying after animal. What do you think about it? Please share your thoughts with me.

Our animal friends can be as important to us as our human frineds are. Losing any kind of friend can be painful. there is nothing wrong in grieving for the loss of an animal friend just as we grieve for anyone else we lose. All friendships can be meaningful and special and the loss hurts just as much.

I love birds and I had a little Budgie as a pet for a few years. he was a jolly fellow and his singing kept everyone happy. He was so adorable. He developed at tumor at such an early age and he passed away. I was so sad after that. I really missed his presence in the home and his singing. You would grieve for a friend you have been with for so long. =)

Thanks guys, he passed away a little more than a year ago but I still miss him to bits! He was a tough fellow and no other bird can replace him. All animal buddies are great friends, big and small! =)

Personally it is very rough when you loose a beloved pet, and you do not have them around anymore. Since my husband and I got married we had to have a Cat put to sleep, we had a 7 month old Pomeranian die on us, and now we have a wonderful Pomeranian that we love just as much. Pets do become a part of your life, and family and can help cheer you up when you need them the most. I can never imagine what it would be like never allowing a pet around me.

I feel your pain too, I have recently after many years rehomed a chocloate labrador, I vowed after my yellow and black labs went I would never go through that heartache again but now in my lifetime I have now had the full set and have rescued this one from being over bred bless and given her a new home. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your precious dog right as I know how much they become a family member. Huggles. Ellie :)

It's normal to grieve. All animals I've had become part of my family. In fact, I see them more as my babies, and so I call them furbabies. I've had to make that decision at least 3 times in my life to have my loved furbaby given the needle to prevent them from suffering. Then I grieve, I've grieved more for my past furbabies, than I have when I've lost human family members. It's very normal. There's no shame in it.

No. I am very open about how I feel about animals. If I grieve for their loss, I show it, and if I am happy playing with them, that too shows. When I feel pity for other dogs that look like they had not been fed, I am not ashamed to share some of my dogs' food with them. There is nothing to be ashamed of here. Pets are very much a part of our family.

of course this is normal. Dog or any animal that we keep in our home becomes literaly a part of the family, children grow up with these animals, they can comfort us when we feel sad, they bring so much joy in our live. so it's completely normal that we grief after we have lost them. Personaly I think that people who don't feel grief after loosing an animal should be feel shame, not the one who do feel it. I also lost a dog once, we had this dog for only 2 years so he hadn't had him for a really long time, but I was devistated when we lost him.

We have had pets for several years and I know how it feels when one has to take a decision to put the pet to sleep. We have had to do it with a couple of them but it is better that way than let them suffer. For days on end we grieve over our loss but time is the healer.

The best you can do for your animal friend is to thank them for their love and end their suffering and pain. It sounds brutal but this is the truth. We will not allow him to suffer. Thank you for your opinion.

I know it's off the topic, but it bothers me a lot how many people write loose instead of lose. Example: -These jeans are LOOSE around the waist. -To LOSE one's voice. I hope I could help to improve your English

It is normal to grieve over a pet since they become a part of the family. I too had a sausage dog that I had brought back from Germany in the late 80's. He lived to be 14 we had him for 10 years out of the 14. There's not a time I don't think about that dog. It's funny you all call them sausage dogs. In the states we call them weiner dogs..lol

Oh no! you should feel no shame whatsoever in grieving for an animal! Just because they walked on four legs and not two did not make them any less loved, any less a part of your family, any less a friend. Sometimes the grief for an animal is actually worse, because they are so loyal and loving, and always there for your. Between an animal and it’s owner there are never any cruel or hateful words exchanged, never any fall outs, or fight, they never let you down, or lie to you, or leave you! .. sometimes the bond between us and our animals is even stronger than that between us and other humans. I am so sorry for your loss and your horrible decision.. and I have been in the same situation as you on two occasions for a family dog, and a family cat, who both got very sick. All I can say is, you must remember you are doing the right thing, and you are easing your poor animals suffering! You are showing her/him one last final act of love!

Dear friend, you have a moving heart of mercy and i have the same feeling as you, when my pet dog left me.He went along well with me and was an animal of human nature.Until now, i cann't believe he has really left me. However we cann't live in such grief. Our own lives still need to continue. I believe that he also lives a happy life in another world.
