Never bite more than what you can chew

It is righty said, ‘cut your cloth according to size of your coat’ and ‘never bite more than what you can chew’; these maxims needs to be remembered constantly. We often tend to take more responsibilities than we are capable of carrying out. This is done to satisfy our ego. We must know our limitations, so why take on additional loads that may create more worries? You cannot gain peace of mind by expanding your external activities. Reduce your material engagements and spend time in prayer, introspection and meditation. This will reduce those thoughts in your mind that make you restless. Uncluttered mind will produce greater peace of mind. I have always followed this, what about you? Please share your view and real life experience ‘if any’ and comment on this. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. .

Knowing our own limitations is something that people battle all the time. I think it is smart to try to push ourselves and try new things but we must know our limitations and not over do it. Must know when to say 'no' also. It is not always easy but we must look to our health, both mental and physical.

It is well said that uncluttered mind will produce greater peace of mind, which is a fact indeed. If we think too much about something or if we have too much worry about things, how can we have a peaceful mind, let alone peaceful life? This can be well seen from my father, free of worry, positive towards life and happily enjoying himself every day, which is an evidence of my father's longevity. Thanks for the nice topic, Professor.

I used to get into fights I couldn't win in the end. I used to always went home with bruises and all and I learned from those experience. Since then, I chose my fights more wisely. If I think I can't take the other person, I'll let the security deal with them. LOL

Well as for me I do agree with you in a certain form because I try to handle so much all at onetime and and Im all over the place it crazy. I have to pray for what is going to make me happy and something that is going to keep me steady, so I do see what you mean in that since of focsuing on one thing.

Hello Papa! Yes this is true and I have been guilty of it in the past. I was one to do more then I could possibly do without jeopardizing my self in the process. I have however, learned in life that I must think of my health and sanity prior to making such decisions in life. I have always been a heavy praying person, but I have learned within the last 3 years to entrust more and pray more often. Have a wonderful night Papa!

Thank you for sharing this wonderful maxim to us. Though I've known about this since childhood it's very difficult to apply them in real life. Especially now that we tend to get busier, we have more expenses than we had before because life has become more demanding than ever! The unhealthy environment pushes us to strive more, spend more on becoming healthy! Thus we need to work more and every minute really counts without thinking of the unhealthy consequence!

It is not always "ego" professor! Sometimes, people have different sorts of compulsions and take up many things at a time. THey are forced to do this. THere are other times when people overestimate their capacity for good time management and their stamina.

About taking more responsible than we are capable of carrying out , to satisfy our ego. I highly disagree with. There are situations in life, when you have more than you can manage because people just abandon you. It's like a man and a woman have children 'together'. One child has special needs. The man just say I can not stand it and walks out of the family's life. The woman is left with the children. Mainly she tries by all her needs to keep the children and herself going. I do not think she is there for her children because of 'her ego'. She is there being her responsibility. The man probably left because of his ego. He wanted a more convenient life. This was only a parable. I always try to manage any situation. Like, have I started it I try by all means to finish it with a good ending.
