For some reason I have comeup quite a few mylotters bored saying theres no good discussions to respond too etc etc etch. No now I tried standing on myhead to stir up my little grey cells to produce a great discussion.no that did not work as I just toppled over and had a heck of a time getting up. lol,.So I made a discussion on what? I know making a discussion. What really does make a good discussion everyone likes and how can everyone like it anyway as we all have different tastes. I am told it must not be too short, others say too long is boring, cannot be a carbon copy of one your friend just made.So a generic discussion like the generic Benadryl pills I get for two thirds less? Nah that would be bland, nobody will like that.so we go "Boring" so whats to write that is not boring?Something funny,ah but jokes bring the rules, cannot play games not that I wanted anyway.Maybe the process of making a good discussion is like I had got an idea suddenly from some one else's discussion but not the same topic at all like the one about something totally different but one of the responders had remarked"What can I do, my husband is happy but I am not and cry myself to sleep every night." So I did make a discussion wondering how many women did feel like that women, trapped in a marriage where she was not allowed to have a job or any hobbies of her own. I gathered my discussion was interesting as I got many responses.so mylotters your take on what makes a discussion interesting enough so people will like it and not feel bored by it.

Hi Mrs. Hatley! I haven't a clue what makes a "good discussion". I like you will respond to anything I can add to. Except for a few interests and I am sure you and I both keep away from them. Any discussion just about anything can be good so as long as the discussion starter at some point participates too. Just like this one where it is a good discussion. Anything we can talk about and add to makes for a good one, I believe. I have been bit out of sorts so I have been keeping myself busy at home offline. Though I won't say it is about boredom with topics, more a me thing and lots of headaches these days.

hi HWG I thought I was doing so well at lunch today as Ileft the bun off the chicken patty sandwich but either the cream of corn soup or the french fries upped my blood sugar to 200 instead of the usual 140. so now am wondering do I cut down on how many fries I eat or cut them out or was it that delicious thick creamy corn soup.or a mix. well I am not giving up on being good I am now learning what to eat and not eat. oh my I am off the topic of discussions. lol but I think you have made a good definition of what a good discussion is. too early for best responses but I have my ideas.I love it when a lot of people converge on a discussion, mine or anyone else's and start things really moving.its so much fun

It was a bit quiet yesterday too, so I downloaded a few movies and watched a couple between responses. Yes, it really was that slow! So today I went for another couple of movies and would you believe it, neither had any sound! Now I'm thinking, what else can go wrong! I dare not post a discussion because with my luck today, it would get zero responses! I'll wait for a better day. Sorry folks!

Personally I often think that it really depends on what a person's mood is each time that they come here, and what will strike them as interesting to respond back too. Not every discussion we see posted here will we respond back too. Even when they are discussions of some of our closest friends. Not all will we be able to relate with and many might not even be things we know about. But since there are always so many discussions being started all the time, when people say this site is boring I wonder what they are really looking for?

hi chang and tina you are so right and sometimes things that I have wrote get maybe ten while others I do not think anyone will care for will get as much as 70 or80 so you never really know. IU have read some I just plain do not understand what they want and if I cannot figure it out in a short time I will by pass it. If I am interested a bit I will ask for clarification otherwise I will go to the next one instead.

For one like me from non-English speaking country,It is not easy to read so many mylot discussions , which are full of slangs more often than not, every day,so if I don't make sure what they say,no way should I make a response.

I don't know dear Hatley and I wish I did. As you know, I rarely start discussions because I fear they would be boring, but quite a few months ago now, whenever I did start a discussion it would be in the day's digest. Now when I start a discussion, it's not in the digest but I'm always happy with the responses I get. (Yes, I know each of us gets a different digest but that's not the point). I think that a discussion is different for all of us. Some will be bored, some will find the same discussion totally relevant. To each his own.

Hi MsTickle, we are in the same boat as we do more responses that starting new discussion. I haven't written any new discussion for a long period and my latest topic that started few months back receiving a full single page of responses only. Anyway I'm glad to add comments to all of them Thus I would like to create some when I have considerable time to take care of them. Hope to see you doing the same. Have a nice day and happy posting

hi mstickle and lkbooi I do not start too many discussions as I tend to get quite a few responses now and I want to be able to respond to all of them. I would rather respond to others like you both said. I just sometimes get an idea then I go with it and hope I will get commented on all the responses I get.

To be honest,I start a discussion if I suddenly think of something.Far be it from me to make allowance for different gustoes. As everyone knows,so many people have been here on Mylot, they come from different countries where social customs vary greatly from country to country ,have different education status and religious belief as well as age gap ,etc.,It is difficult to cater for all tastes.

hi changjiangzhibin thats exactly what I do a lot of times,I see a discussion and some repose in it sends me off to something entirely different but is sparked by this particular response. They are not planned so mush as they just happened, and oddly enough these seem to hit a chord with most people. I get more responses on these than on those I carefully planned. lol lol I really do not thinwe can cater to everyone no matter how hard we try. lol

Hi Hatlley, thanks for writing new discussions every now and then, letting us to join in the fun of chatting about what we have leaned, experienced, etc related to the topic and earn at the same time Yeah, I have participated in many excellent topics you have written that arouse great interest of many participants to join in the posting fun. I understand that writing a quality discussion need to be thoughtful in many aspects and have to get everything planed well. I'm not good in this aspect and I'm lacking of sufficient time to take care of them to comment back later, therefore I always spend most of my spare time here typing responses and comments. However I appreciate you to rack your brains to start a suitable discussion which caters to the tastes of friends and mylotters I won't be bored today at least I can spend my time reading and typing my posts here lol... Have a nice day and happy posting! tags: brain lock, answers, boring day, discussing, every one is bored todaylol

Thanks a lot Hatley, your compliment me give me more confidence in writing post here. I hope reading more posts from friends whose native language is English, would enlighten me in this aspect. good in language will help doing post easier and faster. Yeah, it's indecent not to comment back respondents who try their effort and spend their time to join in the discussion. It's fabulous that there are still many who keep on starting new discussion but never like to comment back even though they are not newcomers here Those who love discussing surely won't like to be stone dropped into the sea I suppose

hi Ikbooi you are welcome I am glad if if appealed as I hoped it would. I try to figure out what appeals to other and what in my own life wou ld touch others and bring others into the discussion. You do very well and your command of English is veryt good too.I also do not make so many discussion that I do not have time to comment back to as its rude not to return the favor and also its not a discussion until someone actually' does start the discussion and opens it up to others.

hi stephcjh yes some long ones can get tedious and I have found myself making some too long but thats because I was thinking as I typed and not really shortening it up a bit. sometimes though it seems like to make it all cohere you need to explain and in explaining it does take a little more wording.so bunnybon I do understand what you are saying.

Hi Hatley, no discussion is too boring for me. It depends on individual interest and how the discussions are written. A long winding discussion can be quite boring as the writer tend to beat around the bush with repetitive words. Too short a discussion is too brief for me to understand what the writer is trying to say. So anything in between with a catchy title will draw me out of my slumber.

hizandi I am that way too. I read a discussion yesterday in which this mylotter used abbreviations unfamiliar to me and talked about a website I was not familiar with yet something in the short discussion interested me. I asked what those letters stood for, and what was this new to me web site about as then I could make an intelligent response. so if its at all interesting and specially if its one of mylot friends I will really respond to it. Its the ones I do not 'understand what they want that I sometimes just cannot respond to. I realize that they may be using English as a second language and having trouble using the right words so I try to reason it out but there are some I just cannot understand.

I think the way to make a good discussion is to think 'what would I like to write about?" "What do I like?" "What has worked really well before?" Maybe even something you saw that was amusing or interesting. We all have certain things we enjoy yacking about and that is where we need to go.
@Hatley (163781)

hi celticeagle I think thats the way I make most of my discussions at least the ones that really get responses. I even made one a long time back on something odd I saw coming back on the freeway from my doctor's appointment. on the side of the road on an off ramp was an old rocking chair with a newspaper on it, and a coffee mug on the ground beside it. I based my discussion on wondering why it was there and was it a place where people sat and hitched rides from those coming off the offramp. lol I got quite a few responses and it was really an oddball discussion but I had fun writing it. another was a modern toilet setting out in a side yard filled with flowers and I thought this surely will not get any responses as its just bizzare but it fooled me., I think if I like my discu ssion then I will get responses, but if I think oh myG why did I write that sure enou gh I get only a few. lol

Hi Hatley, while some discussions are boring, like everyday mundane things but why is it that people would respond to someelse miseries as the one about a who is trapped in a unhappy marriage? but I think people just love to respond to these sort of discusssions then one how much water you drink a day, lol! Big hugs. Tamara xxxx

hi tamara oh that one I made was triggered by a response to another discussion where this woman said her husband was happy enough but she cried herself to sleep at night as he refused to let her have a job or even have a hobby, and oddly this response was not really even pertinent to the discussion it was in. but I got to thinking how many woman do feel trapped. I think its the love of soap operas in us that make p eople respond to that one. Yet today with all the divorces its sad to think there are women who are unhappy in their marriage yet refuse to get out of it. Really we all should be more interested in things like how much water do you drini but too those can be boring. to me the most boring is being asked whats your favorite color or flavor of ice cream? theres not any discussion there

I think that an interesting discussion that alot of people respond to are the ones that almost everyone can relate to or has an opinion about. Those are the ones that I think people really get into. I do think that discussions that only a few can answer has potential too though. Those are the ones where we are trying to actually learn something we don't know about.

Hi JenINTen I have found when I write discussions from my own life and its problems I must hit a common chord with others as I will get more responses on those. some well planned ones have got fewer response at first then somehow lately at each months end I will get quite a few new responses. One is several years old which to me is amazing. some who first responded have left mylot and I really miss then as they were sort of my mentors when I first came here.

A lot of my discussions deal with life. I have started discussions about people I work with and some come from my family. I start discussions because I am frustrated. I really don't care if people like them or not! I rememer when I had a stalker. She always complained I couldn't write a discussion! That my disscussions sucked, too! Thanks to that stalker I don't do a disussion unless I think it through! Even though this people has left me alone since last summer,I still feel she is still stalking me on Mylot! My stalker had taken the fun out of Mylot and I will never forget her!

I am glad she did not know your personal ID so she could find where you lived. Those kind of people really scare me.I hope she has left mylot. if she started stalkikng me I sure would report her. she sounds ill.

Hatley Madam/Aunty: "what makes a discussion interesting enough so people will like it and not feel bored by it." In fact I saw your response for GSB telling that it was boring, In fact mysdianit also concurred with that. My preference for posting response : 1) priority for the topic being easy, understandable and common 2) a topic in which I have expertise or confidence to post 3) a topic started by a friend 4) a topic started by a friend who encourages our response by recognising as good response 5) a topic in which there is a possibility for taking stand - this side or that side, positive or negative, happy or sorrow, sweet or sour.... 6) adequate time and mental peace is there for posting response. I have started it and I am sure many more responses will follow and you will also post your comments.

nenyalorien I love those that make me really think and that get people talking to each other and to the discussion maker too as that means the discussion has really become a discussion. I hate the ones that merely ask whats your favorite this or that as there's nothing to discuss or talk about, just needs three words like I like blah blah blah. those border on poll type discussions but some seem to make it past the amins.

I did not see that discussion, I'll have to look for it. For some reason, not every discussion by my friends makes it to my mailbox. I see a lot of bland discussions lately. Like what is life, how do you feel when this happens or a lecture about health, etc. I used to try to answer every one that came into my mailbox but the past few months I find myself hitting the "delete" button more and more.

hi dragon54u OH I am so glad you said that about delete as lately I am just too inundated with notifications and am just not able to answer every single one like I used to. to me it gets old being asked what is life and in twenty five words or else. just kidding but hats been done too many times. when you have 600 or 700 notification in your mylot file and there are 25 from one person it gets hairy. I tried to answer four of these the the fifth one was already deleted and out of curiosity I tried the next six, all of them were deleted as they broke mylotg guidelines. well now I was missing on the ones I really wanted to respond to after wasting time on those six.I never thought I wou ld get too many friends but thats what happened.

You are right we all have different tastes. Really a lot of the times we are divided into groups, and then there are those who will respond to anything. So I guess I'm saying we usually get the same responders, and maybe one or two who don't always respond to our discussion but that we've seen will respond to anything regardless of the subject. Then we have to worry about those who don't read the discussion at all it seems, and that takes us back to what makes a good discussion worth respondign to? It's an endless cycle. I guess for me the ones that attract my attention the most are ones about peoples lifes, they're struggles, the situations there in, some about crafts, about video games, about working and / or school. Some that are silly. Some that are about peoples plans for that given holiday etc. Oh I think that people make a discussion interesting by asking silly questions, or making a silly quote. Something that might not necessarily be about the discussion itself but gives a person something to respond to when they can't think of anything else to say on the given discussion itself, if that makes any sense. Like I will sometimes ask a silly question at the end of mine, especially at the end of a rant. Not too long ago I asked "waht would you do for a klondike bar?"

hi somecowgirl yes I ha ve done that too to sort of pique inter3est and i love that one What would you do for a klondike bar? I had one that was silly about the expression cottonpicking and told of an incident in a service station in Phoenix Arizona. the man had raised his voice at the mechanic"hey you when are you going to get my cotton picking cotton picker repaired? I need it like yesterday Man?" we had to laugh and they both scowled at us. there were a lot of cotton fields around Tempe and some of the other smaller town. Everywhere yu went people were using cotton picking this and that instead of damned or other worse cuss words.I got a lot of responses and one snotty one these three words"OH mY God." I commented if you didn't like my discussion why did you bother responding? the admins deleted that three word insult with my comment of course. oddly the admin asked me If I could use that comment on some other response? and I really did not see how I could as all the rest were intelligent responses.

whether a discussion is exciting or not really depends on the one reading it so I would say it is subjective but the general gauge would still be when those responses start pouring in . Another way to get inspiration is to go back to interests or things you know a lot about, but then again it's up to the people reading it if it is exciting.

hi louievill yes its like beauty its in the eyes of the beholder but I think when we hit a chord among our readers then we have' made an exciting discussions others are interested in reading. also for me its when I get a lot of responses] it seems to show I touched on something common to us all. I also like to read discussions that talk of something that could have happen to me. like that grrrrrr Cafe Mom that pops up at least three time in an hour and makes you wait to bypass it and go back to mylot. I wrote a tongue in check about wanting to whack it with my trusty axe. got some responses on that one.lol

hi sjvg yes I too have noticed that and the great thing about day to day life is its something we all can relate to and when I have done that I also got a lot of great responses. Now I did one several years back on diabetes and only got maybe six responses of course I was new here too which I have found does make a difference. It like the new kid on the block, he has to wait till the others get to know him then they will finally take to him.Yes I think you are right on mylot as a discussion as I am amazed at how many responses I have got lately.fantastic.
