I'm hungry, but I can't eat

Hi all... I'm very hungry and I want to sleep, but I'm too hungry to sleep. I don't eat after a certain time in the evening, and that has long past. I'm excited about my new business venture too... I've got to build a team of writers/spinners... but that's another discussion... I'm just plain hungry and I want to eat, but I can't eat until I get up for breakfast. It's just a rule so I don't overeat. I'm doing Weight Watchers, and I don't want to start using points this early in the morning when I haven't even slept yet. So I think I will suck on apeppermint.. and hope I can forget about being hungry... what do you do about being hungry when 9ou can't eat?

If you're working very late at night and feeling hungry, just mix yourself something to drink, a glass of juice maybe. It would be wise to store some fruits in your fridge too. Peppermint won't work because you'll feel hungry again in a while. For me, I will usually just have a glass of water.

Well, it's better to take care of your tummy first, isn't it? The diet plan can always come in later.

Hi Jlyn10, Yes, I do stay up late at night. Last night I couldn't sleep either. It was after 4 and I had to get something to eat then. I hate that.. cause it ruins my diet. I have no choice though sometimes.. I just can't sleep. I have so much to do that I get wound up.

I eat many meals a day (easily 5 to 6 meals). I know when I would normally feel hungry and so I try to spread out the 5-6 meals so that I will be unlikely to feel hungry until it's time to eat again.

Hi Huilichan, I eat 3 meals and 2 snacks... my meals are small because I had gastric surgery years ago and my stomach is still rather small.

Since you had gastric surgery b4, isn't better not to go hungry? I have heard that once there is a tear in a person's stomach lining (or sth like that), it will be too late. If you do not want to eat sth b4 bedtime when you are hungry, why don't you try to drink fresh milk (provided you can take fresh milk)? It's better than going hungry. For me, if I am hungry, I won't be able to sleep even if I am terribly tired.

Apples and celery actually burn more calories eating them than they actually contain. Plain celery, with no salt or anything, is just too yucky for me so I'd eat an apple if I didn't want to spoil my diet and was just too hungry to sleep. (I know what that feels like, I was once too hungry to sleep, too tired to eat. I just sat there and cried.) Also, grapefruit is awesome. You actually LOSE weight by eating grapefruit. Of course, you can't add any sugar or other sweetener that would add calories. I eat grapefruit but sprinkle it with Splenda, the zero calorie sweetener. Good luck!

Hi PQ! Yes that has to be really hard because the mind and tummy are craving for food. As some said above it is probably wise to drink a full glass of water which may help to fill you up. I am wondering if there is something you can eat like with zero calories though. Maybe you need to increase a little more dinner which might help keep you more full throughout the night.

Hi HWG! I did eat a little more supper tonight.. I got full right away and I couldn't finish my food.. so I let it sit for a few minutes and just talked with the family.. then I was ready for more food.. so hope i got enough now. I can't eat much due to the gastric bypass I had back in 2001.

I have so much trouble sleeping sometimes due to excitement or exhaustion from working.. and then late at night I get hungry. I will need to get me a little refrigerator in my room so I can have fresh fruit and drinks and yogurt in there so I won't be hungry. I can't come through the house at night because I would disturb the other people in the house.

I sure know what you are going through. I have a hard time going to sleep also when I am hungry. I usually have a crave for something as it is anyways though. I usually have to get up and get something. I just cannot help myself alot of times. I have tried chewing gum or eat a piece of candy to hold me over also but that usually never works. I hope it works for you though.

Hi Steph, candy doesn't work for long to hold off hunger... it spikes the blood sugar and then drops it and then you feel even more hungry.

Hi,my friend, sorry because i have not fully understood you. Did you mean you are hungry, but you can't eat because you don't want to get more weight and it is not good to eat before going to bed? if you have had your supper, then you get hungry again, then i think it is because you stay up too late and the foods in your body are all consumed. why try to go to the bed earlier? Well, if you can't change your habit of stay up too late, and you can try to have your supper at later time. though keeping right weight is important for health, but keep hungry is also harmful to your health.

I stayed up late working and then I got hungry. I tried to sleep but the hunger was keeping me awake. I finally got up at 4:30 this morning and got me something to eat. Then I ate my breakfast at noontime... and will eat supper at my regular time. It is hard when i can't sleep. I was excited about my new business, and figuring out how I was going to get my team together, and then I just couldn't sleep.

This happens to me too sometimes. Most times when I am very tired or very sleepy I find it difficult to eat. So I tend to just sleep and wake up to eat later.

I sometimes work very late into the night. Then I decide to go to bed to try and make the hunger go away. The hunger doesn't go away and then I can't sleep.

I will usually drink some water, but since you can't sleep how about a small glass of skim milk. It will cost you a point of or so, but it will help you sleep as well. If I am having trouble sleeping I do deep breathing exercises that relax the body that usually helps me to get to sleep. You could also eat a pickle or two, if I remember correctly they don't cost any points unless you eat over 4 of them or something like that, pickles were out go to thing when we were on Weight Watchers and hungry.

Personally speaking, I have the same habit as you. I don't eat food within one hour before I go to bed. But for I sleep quite late at night, I often feel hungry at that time. Sometimes I feel so hungry that I have a strong intention to break the rules. But I know it's not good for my health if I eat something before sleeping. So I try to adjust the time of having supper. It seems that such adjustment is effective.

No, it's not good to eat just before going to bed. I've had stuff rise up in my throat while I sleep and I've aspirated on it... it wakes me up strangling.

I don't want to make a habit of that .. searching for food. Water helps some but after a while it just nauseates me.

hi dearest PQ I am diabetic and when I am hungry I know I have to eat regardless of which time of day or night it is. But most of the time we have some fruits or veggies in the fridge soooooo right now if I got really hungry I could choose from apples, cucumbers and bell peppers if hunger hits me.

Hi Ritter, I would like to have a little fridge in my room. My room doubles as my office also.. and sometimes when I can't sleep I work... then when I work at night I end up getting hungry... having some fruit nice and cold would hit the spot. I think when I get paid from my writing I will first get me some glasses and then at a later date get me a little fridge to have such things in and cold drinks.

When you can't sleep, try chamomile tea. It will help make you drowsy (it works for me). Sometimes, the body misreads thirst as hunger. Make sure that you are well-hydrated throughout the day. If you are truly hungry, break your rules and have some veggies or a bit of fruit as a snack. Otherwise, your body will think that you are starving and will work to conserve calories--working against your weight-loss efforts. That's something that a lot of people just don't seem to "get"--and then wonder why they can't lose weight.

Yes I know about thirst and about the body thinking it is being starved. I've written several articles health articles on these topics. I was well hydrated. My hunger hormones were really active from working way into the night. Then when I tried to sleep I was too hungry. I finally got up at 4:30 and ate something. Then I went right to sleep.

When I'm too hungry and I don't want to eat anything heavy? I'd grab chocolate bars or anything sweet because it helps ease the feeling of hunger. You can do it!

I'm afraid eating chocolate would make me crave more. I had a peppermint. That will have to do. I can't sleep when I'm hungry.
