If you found $150,000 in your backyard would you return it?

So I'm reading this article where a man found $150,000 stuffed in a duffel bag in his vegetable garden. He called the police and gave it to them. They said that if no one will claim it then he might (might???) get the money but I doubt that he will see a penny of it. Will you be that honest and return the money? And I never thought that it could be drug money until I read the readers comments. I think it makes sense because who would 'accidentally' drop money in a duffel bag in someone else's house. Maybe they threw it in his property and decided to to go get it later but opps! too late.

If you find money and DON'T start spending it, you are offending the giver; just give glory to the giver-of-all-grace (Flying Spaghetti Monster, or whatever) and accept the gift you are given.

But what if the bad people only dropped the money on your property but was planning to come back. Of course they will look for it and will probably do anything to get their money back but it is a lot of money.

Yes he wont see a penny of it anymore.I thought he was too honest for nothing. Yes it would have been morally and ethically wrong if he had held on to it if he had a chance to find the real owner. But in cases the owner could not be located despite his best efforts its better to keep the money. But this carries an inherent problem. If the money he found was looted from a bank or stolen, then he would be held guilty of the offence. So to be on the safer side its better to turn it over to the authorities and hope that he gets some reward for his honesty.

Wow, I would consider it as blessing from heaven. LOL. I am sure that the people who are keeping the money now will have use for it too. No, if the money has fallen in my backyard, then it is mine. Just like fruits. If they fall in my place, then they are mine.

If such a large amount of money appeared in my backyard, I would call the police too. Well, it's just...too much! I couldn't even sleep well in the evening if I kept them. I need money and want to earn much money, clean money. But if it is $150.00, that would be OK, I will keep them as a fortune.

Hi tessa! I think I would go to the police, too and bring the money there. I would be really suspicious of that kind of money. It's too big to be dropped just like that. I mean, if you're carrying a lot of money, you'll be so very careful not to drop it, right? So it would be suspicious to find that kind of money in my garden. I wouldn't want to be in trouble because of it. I'd rather be in peace rather than have a lot of money but with lots of trouble.

Would you call the police? I certainly wouldn't if I found that kind of money. I would keep it myself. That may be wrong morally but boy, it would make such a difference in my life if I had money. Where I live, in Calgary, they do a lot of clean up drives where people volunteer and school kids volunteer, to clean up the ditches along the transcanada highway between the towns and the city. A couple years ago some kids found a bag of money in one of the ditches. They handed it in to their parents who called the police. The police picked it up and investigated and couldn't find the owners of the money. I am talking about $400,000.00 and it was found in a big hockey duffel bag. Who carries around a big bag of money.all $100's and 20's.and looses it from thier vehicle? The money never got claimed for 1 year so the money was given to the family of the kids that found it. There was a big write up about it in the newspaper. Another time a suitcase of money was found in a McDonalds and the person who found it handed it in to the police and it was never claimed either. That time the guy who found it was given $125,000 after a year as well. Again, I read that story in the newspaper. It seems money gets found a bit more often than we realize. Cheers and happy mylotting my friend, Chris

I would not tell anyone if I found money in my yard like that. I would hide the money in a safe place and keep it for a little while then I would start to put it into my bank account a little at a time until I got it all in there. The reason I would not turn it over to the police is because I know that if I did that, I would never see it again. The money would probably end up in the bank account or closet of someone down at the police station, so I would just keep it for myself.

i am not 100% sure if i will return the money as i also need a lot of money now. no, kidding aside, i will have to bring the money to the media, a radio station, but not to call the police and let them handle it while they are waiting for the owner to claim it. i know it's much safer to go to the media rather than the police.

I probably would have done the same thing and hoped that it wasn't claimed. I would hope I would, but you don't know for sure what you would do until you are in that situation!

$150,000 is a very large sum amount of money. If you try to deposit it into a bank account, it will definitely raise attention. People will ask if you earn this, steal it, or from the lottery. Lottery winnings are usually official. So, you can either hide and pretend you never find anything. Or make something good about it. I would report it to an authority. Just like that person, if nobody claims it, I hope I would get at least some of it.

I believe we can't talk about that. If I'll say that I am honest and I'll try to give back, to find people who losed the money maybe in reality things will change. I saw many people thinking very good but when they saw the money or even touch them their mind changed. So is very hard to talk about that. For example we can say that we don't care about a lion. If a lion will be in front of us.. maybe we'll be very scared. I believe is same with the big pile of money if front of you. So, just give me 150.000 euros, then I can give you a right response :).

Yes I would return the money but I would most probably report it to the police and have the duffel bag brought to the police. The money could have been stolen or not. The police will be able to find out if that's the case or not. If it were someone else's money, at least, I'm glad that it's being returned to them. Imagine the sleepless nights they have, perhaps those money were savings for something they needed ? or maybe for some health treatment costs ? I'd imagine I'd be worried and get sad too if my money that amount got stolen and what if those were money I needed to help someone or to cover a health treatment.

I am a pretty honest person, but also deeply in debt. If I found that money, there would be no doubt in my mind, that I would not return it. Instead I would pay off all of my debt and put the rest in a bank.

I would probably return it because it probably just wouldn't be safe to keep it. Whoever lost that money, knows where it is, and they are going to come back for it. If you return it, then noone is going to bother you. But I guess if I did just leave it where it was, then the person might come back with no problem. As far as I'm concerned, it's none of my business where that money came from or who it's going to. I just wouldn't want to be involved in something like that.

I probaly would not take it to the police. I would keep the money. I know it sounds evil, selfish and gready but I don't care. I would rather keep the money so I could be financelly secure for once in my life! That would be the big reason to keep the money! I would pay off some bills, buy a new car and put the rest in the bank. That is what I would do!

If I am in that situation. I will give it to the police too. Because I know the money is not for me. It be better to give to the authority than to get it...I believe that more money to get in such situation the more money will be loss...

I read many time some found money or any precious article and he/she return it to its real owner.Indeed the money which not belong to us is not our. We have not any right on it. And it is also legal position that any thing which not belong to is not our. We must be surrender it to police. But if we found real owner than we must give it to them.

You will for sure feel frighten because it may from as you have said syndicate, and they might get it from you by force. And if however, you have surrendered it to the police and therefore nothing to show them, for sure they will not face the police and you will be the one caught in a bad situation. However if not and nobody claims, I will wait for somebody who can prove that he owns it and not a dummy. However if the money has names on it that identifies the owner then I will return it. If nobody claims then it is my luck but then still afraid to consume all, maybe I will just deposit it and just enjoy the interest until somebody comes to take the principal.
