Out of this world vs stupid discussions

As a mylotter i've been reading lots of discussions. I usually check top and hot discussions because I know that those discussions are interesting and has lots of responses. But to my surprise sometimes stupid/pointless discussions tend to earn more responses than those of higher level discussions. It's due to the fact that only few people are interested in discussing ideas. Let's put it this way: great people talk about ideas average people talk about things small people talk about other people.

Well if you post something scientific or technical, you are most likely just amusing yourself. Don't expect a great number of replies! Mylot is more about average people who want to have fun without thinking too hard. I'm not a "small people" - in fact I'm quite large.

Yeah that's true. I don't expect to get many response if I start a discussion anyway. And at the same time I don't start an out of this world topic. For me it's better to respond to an out of this world topic if I found it interesting. Funny discussions are interesting for me. thanks for responding. happy lotting.

I think it has a lot to do with simple time constraints. There are a lot of people here who are simply here to make a few cents. If they can do this by answering some inane conversation about cats vs. dogs, they'll do it. It has nothing at all to do with intelligence. Oh, and fyi, what's stupid and pointless to you might not be to others.

Yup it may be true that people just joined this site to earn something but not everyone. What I mean here is that most people are more interested in responding funny discussions and in some instance maybe pointless at all. I'm not judging anyone about their mental capacity let's just accept it as a fact. Thanks for responding. happy lotting.

I might here, take the liberty of quoting a great prophet; "all words are crumbs that fall down from the feast of the mind." As I interpret it, each mind has a different idea of a feast...and the crumbs, even the birds love them. What might be my famine--may be some-one elses feast. I just enjoy this multi-cultural community, and gleen from it what I can, and offer what I can. Cheers!

hi jacruz25 perhaps one person's stupid useless discussion is another person great discussion. If something is getting a lot of responses does it necessarily mean its a stupid discussion? You should at least give an example of a higher level discussion. I thought mylot was open to all people not just to a few college professors and geniuses. I have seen great people talk about things too as well as ideas. also average people often talk about ideas too.my own discussion is on the hot list and it has a lot of responses so is it a stupid pointless discussion? "Small p eople talk about other people" okay so you are talking here about other people, people you do not even know, so are you not a small person then?

Probably it's in their mood to answer a question or participate in a discussion. Sometimes whenever I go check topics here, there are good ones but nobody participates, probably some can't relate to it, others may have been lazy to post an answer or some do not even bother to care and reply. But no matter what the topic posted, be it shallow or not, the point is if the topic still corresponds to rules here in Mylot. I tend to skip those topics which I may find a waste of time especially if it opposes Mylot rules because it can be deleted only. Now which topics are pointless, if you ask me, those that can be deleted here anytime, stupid topics? hmmmm that depends on your definition now. I don't like to point out which ones are, we can't be rude here right, we need to respect others too.

myLot is a place where we can discuss almost everything whether it is a smart or a stupid discussion. Anyway, smart or stupid discussions depends on our preferences or interests. I don't believe that great people (as you have said) only talk about ideas and not all small people (according to your definition again) only talk about other people. I see that we can't be serious all the time just talking about ideas but many people come in here to enjoy. So when you enjoy, you just can't be serious. It's like being with our friends that we did stupid things and enjoy. Those people I believe, come in here to free themselves from stress and just express what they have in mind and what they feel. They want to go into a different world that they come in here so that atleast they'll be able to free themselves from stress, worries, problems, etc.

True. It's just usual that most people loves to discuss funny things. Like I have said many people tends to respond to interesting discussions. But there are still discussions that are pointless at all. example: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/284085.aspx some are funny: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/272381.aspx

Yeah I have read many discussions already that seem to be pointless and nonsense but there were cases that the lotter who started the discussion isn't very good in English so they have difficulty at times to express their thought. I guess we should just encourage them to create quality discussions.

I guess I cannot say anything but "LOOK WHO'S TALKING." We have this saying before that before you clean up someone's eyes, try cleaning up yours first. I guess someone has to look back to his own work and see which and who is making SMART OR STUPID DISCUSSIONS. It's sad when people brag about things they don't have, people just end up laughing at them.

I am sure lots of mylotters will feel bad with this. please next time, if you make a discussion don't think of something that would offend any mylotter. Try to make quality and NON-JUDGMENTAL discussions. I know you're brilliant and you got better discussions than this.Happy mylotting!

They will only feel bad if they don't understand my point. Like what I have said SOME discussions earn many responses even sometimes they look pointless at all. I didn't say all discussions in top discussions are pointless/stupid, you know what I mean? I think I made my self clear for that and at least made it fair to everyone. Thanks for responding.. happy lotting.

i hope this discussion of yours doesnt get deleted because you referred some of the discussions because i myself also envisaged the same situation but anyway sometimes oops most of the times i get surprised when people when peopel ask some weird things and start chuckiling when i read anything that is weird or as you define stupid ....but at the end of the everyone has the prerogative to start the discussion how they when the want if people dont find it interesting they shouldnot comment on it as simple as that

I notice that people here in my lot mostly respond on simple discussion. Not really stupid but something related to their life. I'm just wondering if this topic is being search on the search engine. I think some are defeating the purpose of my lot And that is to contribute knowledge, ideas or reviews about how is something done, or what is something about.

I am reading many discussions too and if it comes to what is most interesting I think this also depends on what you find interesting. I like good discussions, eye openers, to read other people's opinions. to others "stupid/pointless" discussions are more interesting. No need to think just having a relaxing time on the internet.
