Breast Infection

United States

I've got an infection of the breast. I've been sore, but didn't know why... then today I noticed pus coming from my breast from the milk duct. It is painful right to the core. The pus is thick and is trapped but can be expressed out somewhat. I have made a doctor's appointment for Friday at Noon.. I'll let you all know what she says.. she will probably want to send me for a mammogram, and I don't want that because of the bill... I have insurance but you know that 20% adds up. Your thoughts? I don't want to run up more bills than necessary.

There are some things you can't put a price on. While it may indeed only be an infection you can't take the chance it may be something else. We all understand about finances in today's world but you must take care of yourself.

She wanted me to have a mammogram last July when I had my physical but I refused due to the expense.. I said I had too many bills now and hate getting put into collection due to them. If she says to get one I probably will.. but I can't stand the cost.. getting put into collection due to so many bills is hurtful.

I think JBrooks is right PQ! Money is no object when it comes to your health! Puss isn't normal, and if I were you I would certainly seek professional help! They will help determine the problem. I hope everything goes well, PQ. Keep us posted.

I definitely understand the bill situation. I have put things off for myself also because of it.

Hi PQ! Oh boy do I understand foregoing some things due to expenses. I don't have any insurance and any income to rely on when I am sick. I have been experiencing migraines and severe headaches for so many years and sadly I can't afford to get medical treatment. I have done a lot of research online and if your doctor asks for a mammogram, why don't you check the American Cancer Society. They do free mammograms all over the world. This might be helpful for you and a little research on it and I am sure you probably can either get it at the 80% coverage and or if not free. Do have them take a look and see what is going on as it really has to be painful and sometimes we cannot let things go by without treatments. In the meantime, try some warm compresses to the area to help with some of the pain. Pleas update us as I want to make sure you are okay.

Thank you HWG! I hope so too. I hope I don't have to go through imaging or aspirations.

Sorry I'm so late but I just had to jump in. You have a discharge and pain and that means an infection. A mammogram won't change that and so you need an antibiotic. Try the medication first and if things don't clear up, then go to plan B. I hope things are good for you by now.

Hi Ms Tickle! I am on an ABT now... there is no more discharge.. there is still the cyst though.. I call it a cyst because it is hard.. will have imaging done if this doesn't resolve itself.

I hope you went for the mammogram. You're too important not to get it checked out.

Dear PQ I know you are on a budget and I also do know how hard this situation must be for you. But your health comes first. You are still on the antibiotics for sure as most of the time you got to take them for more than a week, but if you need a mammogram so you need it, in spite of the bill that comes with this need. So please please get one if its necessary.

Hi Ritter, Yes, I'm still on ABTs for now. The pain I had is gone, so that is a good thing, and I think the lump is smaller that was there... so I think it is settling down. If I feel any hard lump after the ABTs are gone I will make another appointment with her for sure.

I have never had that happen to me before. You poor thing. I would not want to go to the doctor and have a bill either. We have enough money going out as it is. I hope you do not have to go for the mammogram and have to pay more.

Hi Steph, I hear ya. I don't want the expense at all. I'll have the mammo if she insists, but then that puts me more behind and nothing is wrong to boot.. so wasted money.
