Last evening, a young man, just 23, got severe injury, his palm was blown away while he was lighting a cigarette using a cheap gas filled lighter, today he died in the hospital. One can see here, road side stalls selling cheap products that comes from China, some are good for the price you pay, like ‘use and throw’ type. Long back I had also bought a gas filled cigarette lighter, though I don’t smoke; I used this for lighting incense sticks, which I show to our Gods and Goddesses after offering flower etc. After few days, it failed to ignite the gas in one stroke; I threw it away, because it is known the LPG gas in it can form a very powerful, inflammable explosive mixture with air. I guess something similar happened with this man What is your opinion? Are cheap Chinese goods available there, do you use them? I am aware that most of our electronic goods are China made, not the cheap ones the best. Please share your views and comment on this. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . 8/9/2011

That was a fatal accident for the man, professor. How sad that a lighter have done that to him. That made me think, not to buy a cheap lighter from the sidewalk as a ready light for the candle whenever it suddenly goes brown-out in our place. However, i have bought things made in China, such as the small rechargeable flashlight that is always in my bag, so when i ride those pedicabs, i could light a dark alleyway. So far, it's very much working and lights brightly. Then, i bought a cheap white bulb made in Taiwan, for our stockroom, which we would just switch on, as we look for things at night. So, far, it's working brightly when lighted. I am wondering though, why are China made things so cheap in comparison to other brands?

hi, maybe not all things made in china is not that cheap or low quality,i guess the lighter that used by that guy was defected or maybe not passed to quality control in China, they said that all made in China is very cheap and disposable, sometimes accident happen not because of the things but due to negligence of the owner.

Well, those lighters do have warning labels on them for a reason. I have lighters at my house and I have never been hurt by any of them, but then again, I have been trained on how to used them properly. My cousin, brother, and myself used to all be a bunch of pyros, and when we lit fireworks, candles and other sorts of things we used many lighters and matches for the jobs. My cousin and I were naturals, my brother needed a little bit of training. You just have to know how to really use the stuff.

China is now known for its irresponsible way of producing goods. They will do anything, eventhough they know it will make their product unsafe and dangerous to health, as long as they fulfill their quota for the lowest possible cost price for them. One infamous case now of course is how they had added melamine to their milk products just so they could satisfy the protein level requirement for milk products. My father now warns us against buying any food that says "Made in China". Unfortunately, since a lot of products are made in China, it is quite difficult to completely stop buying products made there.

Hi Professor! The young man was very unfortunate. I guess he was trying to save money that's why he bought that cheap gas-filled lighter. China-made products are also available here. It's everywhere all over the world. And even though they are known to be short-lived, many people are still buying it because they are cheap. We can't blame these people because they don't have the money for buying the good quality products. I even buy China-made products sometimes. The other day I bought hangers which are made from China. I think it just depends on how careful we are in using these products. If we are careful, we won't be in danger. And if know what products are safe or not, we can avoid these dangers.

Just a question on the incident. How did the man die if the situation says that he only blew his palm with the lighter? Isn't there worst case, like amputation of legs or arms and still the victim still survived or lives to tell the tale? I'm just confused. Please enlighten me.

Hi professor, It is very sad that this young man had to die from this and certainly such dangerous items should not be sold anywhere. I'm not surprised however, because public safety is not considered a priority in many places. It seems that greed and not the safety of others is uppermost in the minds of those who manufacture such products. More and more big manufacturers are turning to China because of the cheap labour available there and not considering more important issues. Blessings.

hi professor, most china made products are substandard especially those that do not have brand names. but still there are many branded things that were produced just by imitating hence this is another problem. Toys of children and milk products are not spared. philippines had had warnings on these products. so everyone should be careful when buying and they should read labels. ann

Hello Papa! Oh how very sad to hear and yes there are some make shift products, as we call them that at times are defective and will cause danger. My ex-sister-in-law had a tenant down on the first floor of her apartment building, who left a cheap curling iron hanging on a nail on the window sill of her bathroom. It malfunctioned somehow as although it was off, it was plugged into the outlet. This burned the entire 3 floor story building terribly, causing her husband and 5 children, to loose their home for a very long time until it was repaired. After the firemen and manufacturer investigation it was found that the cheap curling iron made in china malfunctioned. Thankfully no one was hurt but it was quite a scare and a lot of smoke inhalation. This all happened at 1 am, where they were all sleeping. I am really sorry to hear about the man being killed as a result of a cheap product. We at times cut some corners and buy cheap products and do not realize the repercussions it can cause. Have a great night Papa!

This is almost not believable but I suspect it is possible to actually die of complications. Still many people will agree that many products are cheap in more ways than one as they were when Japan was producing only cheap products after retooling their economy in the 50's - 60's. Perhaps, for China that will change in the future but today many products are cheap and cheap. This applies to clothes as well.
