" a fish is finite...to fish is infinite" (Siler. 1995)

This well known proverb has been super imposed on to many a situation, for example: that of fashion, driving, even the Internet as Todd siler highlights in his book Think like a Genius (1995). This is for sure a versatile and valuable concept, however, it has crossed my mind whether there is a situation to which this cannot be applied? Equally in a society where more and more is done for us by others, is our continuously increasing reliance on others (the finite) leading to a crisis of identity? an identity that would have been gained through learning the trade (there by achieving the infinite). For example Wade Rowatt (2001) highlights a correlation between role definition and self definition, in his book the Adolescents in Crisis....

Oh my gosh sister this is soooo deep...You challenge me to use my rusty brain. LOL! To answer your question, I do believe that up to some extent, we will suffer some crisis in identity by being too reliant on others. But human as we are, we will always be reliant on others and will always need others to exist happily. I believe that its a must that we should NOT rely on others to solve our problems and in bailing us out of difficult situations. We become who we are from our learnings and experiences that make us realize our full potential and values...it also builds our character.
