Do you think about your health while you decide what to eat?

Many people eat what they best like, others think of what is healthy even if it´s not their first choice. I tend to do a sort of truce between both. I will not eat something I don´t like, no matter how healthy it is. But I do the best I can to moderate my wishes to eat some very yummy junk food. How about you? Are you the health before everything person or do you indulge in delicacies that are against your health? Share!

I am like you and will not eat something that I don't like. I do eat whatever I want to whether it is good for me or not. I have never had any health issues from food so that helps a bunch.

My health problems have never come from eating either. Now I´m on a diet due to chemo, but as I love to cook, I have managed to make good dishes with the ingredients I can eat.

Fortunatly I´m a good cook, so I have changed some types of food for others that are on the list. You can use any spicey thing, but I change flavours by using some fruits such as apples.

I was reading about the foods people are not suppose to eat while on chemo. I was amazed at how many there are. I also looked at some recipes. There are a bunch. I guess a person would just have to get used to them. I have never been there but if I did have to do chemo I will be a little prepared.

I'm with you on this one. If it's something I don't like, it won't get eaten, period! When I eat junk food, I try to take smaller portions and chew it longer. That way I fool myself into thinking I've had more. Works most of the time.

Have you ever tried any of the sweeteners made with stevia? It's sold under various brand names and is great for baking. Here's an INFORMATION ONLY website about it: http://www.stevia.net/

The problem is that, as we grow older, the list of the forbidden food grows. Fortunatly there are pills that can help us cope with some of our troubles. I have a friend with diabetes that is reasonable all week, but once a week he comes for tea with his wife and I must have some of my orange-carrot jam for him. I´m thinking of tricking him by makin a batch with Splenda

Hi marguicha! Most of the time, when I buy food, I think of my health first and choose what's best for it. Especially now that I want to lose some fats and just be healthy inside. I also do exercise to support my diet. However, there are times that I also give in to my cravings. Like cravings for junk foods like chips, fries, and the likes. I also eat ice cream sometimes, cakes, and all those high-calorie food. But I make it a point that I only give in to these food cravings only once in a while. And whenever I eat something like these, I always follow it with lots of water.

I can't avoid to get stressed, I've got work, studies and all. So that means, I'm prone to food cravings!

The craving part has more to do with stress, from what I have learned. Try to lead a simpler life although I know it´s not easy now. I don´t think that icecream is as fattening as fries. I love fries, but I don´t eat them more than twice a year.

It was only recently that I thought about eating healthy. I do still eat junk food at least occasionally, but I do eat a lot more good food than I did before. I mostly eat to fill the void when hungry, but I know that if I start eating well, that I might be able to beat this cancer. By the way, how are you doing? Have a great weekend!!!

I also have an appointment on the 7th. I will find out then if the temoxefen is working or not. I think it is doing something because the pain that I had been having (in the area where she said the biggest tumor was) is no longer there. I also started doing acupuncture so I don't know if that is what is making the change or the pill. Either way, as long as it helps that is all I care.

Hi Deb, I´m about to have my 6th chemo on the second week of November. The lymphoma has responded well to chemo and it has shrunk, but it´s not the kind that you beat. It´s a slow grower though so probably chemo (that will go on spaced during the next years)will help calm it. I have to eat healthy food while my defenses are low and I´m on chemo. But I´m plning on a splurge as soon as I can. Not everyday, but once. I´m tired of eating healthy. On Nov 7th, I have an appointment with the doctor and I´ll have more clues about the prognosis. I´m beating this cancer one day at a time. So I´m planning on vacations as soon as the doctor lets me. Meanwhile I´ve been busy doing gardening to get organic veggies for free. A big HUG

I tend to think of my health but find it hard to make a decision sometimes. You hear so many things these days sometimes you are not even sure what is true. I believe in moderation in everything but can be caught indulging in sweets or popcorn from time to time but do not consider those unhealthy as some taboo brands that do not seem to care (thinking of meat products).

I agree with you that much is said about food that noone really knows if there´s a scientific idea behind it. I remember years ago when butter was banned and you only had to have margerine. But later it seemed that margerine was worse because the fats that made it were not the best. I started to use more oil then, but used butter on certain foods that asked for it.

I imagine that life would be very dull if we didn´t indulge in things we like once in a while, even if they are unhealthy. I don´t think you are hard-hearded, I think you are normal.

Hi Marg, i agreed with you that once in a while we need to indulge in the things that we like, to add colors to our life. But, of course there need to have limit over it....

Personally, I always look at the labels. I'm a person that tries to make sports and be phisically active. Only low carbs foods, low fat and low sugar. I like to have a nice body, and to have that some things are needed, specially for those who want to get slimmer. And not only to loose fat. To be more healthy these things are needed. Many people have their colesterol too high or have heart problems because of the junk food they eat. We have to control ourselves!!

I don´t understand how can you do sports and yet have a low carb diet. Our body needs carbohidrates for energy. If it doesn´t get it the good way, our body will find another that will make our liver work full time. A reasonable amount of carbs will not make any problems to your cholesterol levels..

I don´t even think of junk food like McDonalds food when I write a post. I shouldn´t say this, but I find that food absolutly inedible. Normal homemade food has the right amount of carbs we need.

The colesterol problems that I talked was because of the junk food like McDonalds food. And when I say low carbs I don't mean light foods, bu I try to avoid foods that have a huge amount of carbs that will not only replace the energy, but the belly too. :)

For me it really depends on the mood I am in. I know with being Diabetic there are some things I should try and avoid as much as I can, but sometimes it is just so hard. There are foods I really enjoy like Rice, but try not to have it more than once or twice a week if I can. Just wish items like Fruits, and raw vegetables were not so expensive.

Fortunatly in my country veggies and fruits in season are not expensive at all. In this moment we have pears and apples, imported yet cheap bananas and our own oranges. In a couple more months we will hstart with the first fruit of the warm season.

I do consider my health before eating any food. Usually, I try to control those that I know are not good. But sometimes, I give in to my cravings for great tasting food despite the fact that they are harmful to health. What is really frustrating is there are a lot of great tasting foods that are really not good to health or if taken to much will surely bring forth health problems later on. So as much as possible I control but sometimes I give in. So perhaps the key is here is what you have said.. moderation.

I eat balanced meals because it´s in my brain´s hard disk. But I´m not thinking about health all the time. I think that homemade food that has proteins, carbs, veggies and fruits are good meals antwhere. I don´t usually eat those chips full of fat, mainly because I cannot afford them. With the price of one of those nice cans of chip I can make a whole meal. I forget moderation when I am invited out (there I order french fries for example) and I eat all the chocolate I receive as a gift, although I never buy chocolate because I know I´m an addict.

I like my food healthy or not...I tend to eat healthy most of the time but I don't like to compromise on taste...soooo I mostly cook at home but when I go to a restaurant I just order what I like...hey after all is only once in a while! and why not?after all the word [junk food] was created by the healthy food fanatics! to me there is not such thing as junk food [ unless you get it from the junk pile...the council tip in the rubbish plot! other wise to me food is just food.

I am sure that homemade food is usually healthier than food you eat outside. Even when you make french fries, you know what kind of oil you are using and you don´t use the same for months. I don´t even think of health when I go to a restaurant either, but I usually go to good restaurants where my friends invite me to repay good food I make at my home for them.

I wasn´t thinking of being sick. When we are ill, we don´t want to eat anything. I was thinking that many people here talk about food as if they only think on it being healthy. I think that takes out a lot of the pleasure of eating. We must not eat only junk food, but a little something once in a while keeps our mind healthy

I make deals with my body. I don´t attack it too much, but I will not stress myself if I eat something not too healthy that I love. A couple of days ago someone told me that crabs had lots of cholesterol. i´m willing to have my cholesterol levels rise if someome offers me a lot of craf with a nice sauce on the side

I actually like eating heathy things like fruits , vegetables , serials and pulses. It gives me energy and a good mood. Hmmm...I think it was a lot easier if candies were never introduced to us. Many unhealthy foods makes us feel good right after eating them , making us addicted. That's also the problem of people who try to make a diet , they start good , lose weight and then they have to make up for it by eating sweets and unhealthy foods. Sometimes I eat candies because I can't hold on with heathy food , I become desperate for calories and sugar. Then I hope I will make up for it the next day , by eating most vegetables most of the time , doing some sport.

Hello my friend! It's been a long time! :) About the discussion, I'm sort of same like you. When I know it's bad for my health I really try to moderate my intake. I always think of my health when eating because even though I'm just young I already experience pains of aches that are suppose to be present later in like. Haha. Right now I'm diet conscious and also exercise regularly. shadow41

I consider that eating is a pleasure and people should eat what they like. But if I know that something is really bad for my health, I won't eat it. When I know that something is very healthy, but I hate the taste of it, I won't eat it neither. There are some times when it is very important to eat something which I don't like, when I am sick, then I do it, just to recover faster, but otherwise, I try to eat what I like and what is not to bad for my health. I know that french fries are not so good for my health, but it is my favorite meal, with some cheese upon it and garlic sauce with roasted meat. This is not to healthy, but also not to dangerous and usually this is the Sunday meal.

I always think how healthy a food is before taking it because a healthy meal means a healthy body ( at least most of the times) but their are just some days where I throw caution in the wind and indulge in delicious but not so healthy foods but just in moderation and I am still conscious not to over do it or feel my body on how much it can tolerate.

I do it always. I follow a strict vegetarian diet, not only because of the benefits to the environment, and for the much it contributes to avoid slaughter and animal abuse, but also because of the healthy it is for me. Since I went vegetarian I noticed a big change in the way I feel, and I never get sick. I also keep away from eggs, though sometimes I tolerate certain dairy products which I plan to leave soon too.
